Perhaps it could be something for the good of the community like an Ice Rink,Bowling Alley but we all know it will be another Supermarket. |

or simply a car park. I remember the old Trinity Church, near the Queens Road - I'm not specially religious, but it was certainly a fine old church, splendid acoustics, a fantastic concert organ, and space for 800 seated people. What better use than to make it a concert or community events hall? But what did the powers-that-were do? Turn it into a car park. Grrrrrr ..

I found this little ditty on youtube. I'd never heard it before and with the imminent closure of Reading prison I thought I'd share it. |

But you raise a serious issue tidus. Many people will be out of work when the prison closes. The officers and governors will be offered alternative prisons to work in, albeit there aren't that many within easy reach of Reading, but many other staff will not be so fortunate. Unfortunately that is the problem with old prisons, especially when they have been engulfed by the town. When it was built, as with many other prisons, it was on the outskirts of the town. Now its right in the middle. Add to that its limited capacity and high maintenance costs and, as bad as it is for the people working there, it makes economic sense. Unfortunately, as Mike says, thats all the government considers, the economics. |
