Reading Borough Council are warning potential buyers of the Reading Prison site that they must consider the historic importance of the area in any development plans. The prison was closed by the Government in December 2013. The prison site is now empty and the Ministry of Justice intends to sell the site. The prison building is Grade II listed and falls within the proposed ‘Abbey Quarter Area’ - a historical site of local and national importance.... Difficult to think what a potential buyer might do with it. Oxford Prison, which was much older than Reading, has been turned into a hotel. If they pull down the horrible modern wall which surrounds Reading prison, the old 19th century architecture could look quite attractive where its located, on the corner between the Abbey and the canal. |

Warden assisted flats for the elderly would be nice. One of the bigger problems of closing a YOI and opening a new super sized one elsewhere that is privately run also means prison officers out of a job as well as the ancillary staff. Each time that happens you lose more qualified prison staff to unqualified glorified security guards. Prison staff have 3 levels of riot training, the normal day to day control & restraint, minor incident training and the full riot training. That one is great fun, you go strolling into a building and find yourself having molotov cocktails being lobbed at you by police officers! You can't send civilian staff on these courses, and the glorified security guards at the private prisons are civilians. That means every time there is a mass refusal of returning to cells or fights break out, they have to call in the prison service to deal with it! So the tax payer ends up paying the security guard wages plus x amount extra for the proper qualified prison staff to go in and sort the mess out. The last one I went on we were paid our normal wage plus £24/day to sit in a coach outside the private prison ready to go in - that was early 90's and I bet it's not £24/day these days!! You could have 2/4/6 coaches at each call out - 50 staff/coach - really good idea privatising prisons!!! *rollseyes* |

Warden assisted flats eh? Only if they're privately run so that someone can make loads of money out of it. Its a wonderful old building with lots of ancillary buildings attached to it. It would cost millions to renovate it into some other use, but if anyone has the money to buy it and do the work, and a little bit of foresight, they could make a killing. |
