I no longer live in Reading, so its more about what local people think, but my personal view is that it will be a travesty if the old gaol is demolished for housing. There are so many other options. For much of this year it has been opened to the public, who have paid good money to go and have a look round the prison. If this was extended to open the place up on a commercial basis, it could be a real success, especially with the Oscar Wilde link. Knock the external wall down, and some of the newer internal buildings, but retain the main building, which has stood since 1844. It really could be a roaring success and become a major tourist attraction for the town which, lets face it, doesn't have too many of those. |

Get Reading http://www.getreading.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/reading-prison-legacy-discussed-glugs-12473893 Reading Prison legacy to be discussed at Glug's first anniversary event The opening of the old jail will be on the agenda at the Glug anniversary event More than 45,000 people visited Reading Prison when National Trust and Artangel offered tours around the Victorian jail. And since the exhibition and historical tours drew to an end just before Christmas, project manager Kirsti Wilson has been thinking about how its legacy can be continued. She will be talking at the Glug Reading first anniversary event for 2017 on Thursday, January 26. The events, geared towards the design and creative community, offer a chance for like-minded people to network and share ideas. Artangel co-founder James Lingwood has touched on the project's legacy in the past, mentioning its success at the annual Reading Economic Forum in 2016. Talking to business leaders he said: "Reading provided the opportunity to be a testing ground for the project to open up the Victorian prison. The prison is one of the most important listed buildings. It was a nerve-wracking few months. We didn't need to explain to any of the performers why they needed to come. They knew Reading Prison was an important site." The prison, which has been empty since it was closed by the Ministry of Justice in 2013, opened its doors to the public in September last year. The programme of events included National Trust tours which told the story of how the Victorian prisoners lived, and performances from Rupert Everett, Ralph Fiennes and Ben Whishaw. Eventually the run of events was extended due to overwhelming public demand. Other speakers included on the first Glug Reading programme are Giles Rhys Jones of What3Words and Briony Gordon of not-for-profit organisation Cause2Create. Previous speakers include Uber, The Dots, The Social Chain and Reading FC, and the events attract more than one hundred professionals from creative, digital and web agencies. The event on Thursday, January 26 will start at 7pm at Public Reading in Castle Street. Tickets are available for free online via Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/glug-reading-tickets-30457160186 |

45,000 visitors in under 3 months is a phenomenal figure. Surely that proves there are serious commercial opportunities to take this forward as a major tourist attraction for the town? And that has to be a more fitting future for such a historical building than turning it into a residential dwelling, or worse, knocking it down to build houses. |
