![]() "This upper layer of society, bored with the old church routines of traditional Orthodoxy, looked for meaning and sensation in the occult. Amid an atmosphere of decadence, of cards and gold lying on green baize tables, of couples flushed with champagne dancing all night, of galloping troikas, of fortunes staked at the racetrack, the mediums and clairvoyants flourished." Robert K. Massie, Nicholas and Alexandra It is Summer 1912. The setting? The Russian Empire. Russia, as many know, is currently ruled by the Tsar Nicholas Romanov II, and his beautiful, young, charismatic family - his beautiful wife, Tsaritsa Alexandra Fyodorovna, his daughters, the Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia, and the heir to the Russian throne, Tsesarevich Alexei Nicholaevich. There are those that look at the Tsar and his family and see an idyllic lifestyle, set behind a glistening world of money, land, parties and fine titles. There are also those that see corruption, decadence, inequality and violence in the seemingly gentle blue eyes and docile demeanor of the Tsar. Russians, however, only know so much - and that the ideal world of the Romanov family has been rocked by not only whispers and rumors of revolution, but a simple disease known as hemophilia, known to be a fatal disease. The Bleeding Disease has run down the family line of Alexandra, revealing itself in the young Alexei. He cannot play like normal boys or even do the things that most young children do. Instead, he is sequestered around his worrying, paranoid and self-reproachful mother, his sisters and various doctors and nannies. All of them are unable to help poor Alexei when he is hit with an attack, and can only suffer in silence through his bone-chilling cries of pain during his episodes. It is the Orthodox church, however, that gives the Tsaritsa hope and answers her prayers, delivering to her a starets by the name of Rasputin. What Alexandra doesn't know is that he is a wizard: a proficient magic user whose talents can make or break the Empire. While Alexandra was deep into the Russian faith, she often ignored the possibility of wizards, wondering why it was that Russian Aristocrats so often kept peasants by their sides so often. Now she knew. As word of Rasputin's talent rang through Russia, nobles worried about their wizards, as they were sure that people would clamor for them, or that they could easily become cause of further hatred and concern among the revolutionary elements of their society. The secret relationship between nobles and wizards seemed to become too open, while meanwhile the peasant population of Russia continued to starve and die at tremendous rates. The rumors are starting to cause resentment and unrest, fueling to the desire to see the Tsar and those of his ilk abdicate the throne - and it is being furthered by a young man with an agenda - Vladimir Lenin. This is the story of Religion, Magic, Wealth and Revolution. This is THE SPIRIT OF RUSSIA. Edited by Matushka, Oct 1 2010, 10:48 PM.
