Stupid football really kinda effed things up last night, but it's a minor hiccup in the long run.

Updated TV Ratings Thursday: Big Brother Biggest; ‘Rookie Blue’ Ratings Low

ABC’s Rookie Blue hit what I think is a series low 1.1 adults 18-49 rating, while Nightline Primetime had just a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating.

Note that the coverage % shows in what portion of the US TV households the show was available last night. For example, Rookie Blue was pre-empted in 6% of the US TV HHs. Big Brother was certainly pre-empted in a portion of the US as well (more than 20%), but that coverage % was not available.

The numbers below are all final ratings, not the typical fast affiliate overnight ratings we usually post in the mornings. We don’t have all the show’s numbers, but this is what we have.

Rookie Blue (92% coverage ABC normally 98%)
- 4.682 million viewers
- 3.0/5 HH
- 1.1/3 A18-49

Rookie Blue “most-watched new Canadian series in 2 decades”

ON TARGET: GLOBAL’S ROOKIE BLUE HAS BECOME THE MOST-WATCHED NEW CANADIAN SERIES IN TWO DECADES

* Inaugural Season Sets New Records With 1.8 Million Viewers Each Week
* Highly-Anticipated Two-Hour Season Finale Airs Thursday, September 9 – 9pm ET/PT

As the first season of Global’s smash hit Rookie Blue comes to a close with the gripping two-hour season finale tomorrow (Thursday, September 9 – 9pm ET/PT), this summer’s hottest show has earned a new commendation: the distinction of becoming the most-watched rookie season of any scripted Canadian TV series in two decades – on any network.

Averaging 1.8 million viewers each week, Rookie Blue has now surpassed Due South’s inaugural season in 1994 (1.7 million viewers). In the process, it has also become the most-watched Canadian program – scripted or unscripted – of the 2009/2010 broadcast year.

Some other key successes from Rookie Blue’s first season:

* Won its competitive Thursday 9pm timeslot nationally 10 out of 11 weeks
* Every episode of Rookie Blue was in the weekly national “Top 10” in Canada
* Rookie Blue was the #1 show in Canada during the weeks of June 21 and July 19 – a new first for a Canadian scripted drama
* Rookie Blue was watched by a total of 8.5 million viewers in Canada and the U.S. each week this summer – more than any other Canadian show
* Confirmed data for the series premiere indicates that a record-breaking 2.2 million viewers watched the pilot episode in June – the highest-rated premiere for a Canadian drama series on any network in over a decade
* Season 2 was greenlit only three weeks following its ground-breaking premiere on Global and ABC

Commissioned by Canwest and picked up by ABC during development last year, Rookie Blue was developed by Thump Inc. and produced in partnership with leading indie studio and distributor, E1 Entertainment.

Canwest’s unwavering commitment to the series began as early as the pitching stage and has continued unabated throughout the season. Global’s original production executives worked closely with the talented producers and creative team during script development, casting and filming. Canwest’s support of Rookie Blue was bolstered by an extensive, national, multi-media marketing campaign – the most comprehensive of its kind for an original series airing on Global.

And after packing heat on the air all summer long, production on the second season is now underway. Shooting entirely on location in Toronto, the cast and crew will be filming new episodes this fall through early 2011. Broadcast details will be announced at a later date.

Rookie Blue airs Thursdays at 9pm ET/PT on Global and ABC. In the season finale, “In Blue/Takedown” (Thursday, September 9), tension mounts as the rookies undergo make-or-break assessments by Staff Sergeant Frank. Then, Andy and Chris accidentally screw up a major drug bust when they arrest one of the players. In an effort to save the operation, Swarek and Andy go undercover. When Swarek’s life is endangered, it’s all hands on deck as the officers at 15 Division try to save one of their own. Wendy Crewson (The Summit) and Tom McCamus (Waking up Wally: The Walter Gretzky Story) guest star.

The series features a dynamic group of Canadian actors including Missy Peregrym (Reaper, Heroes), Gregory Smith (Everwood), Charlotte Sullivan (M.V.P.), Enuka Okuma (24) and Travis Milne (My Green House). Rounding out the diverse cast are Ben Bass (Would Be Kings), Eric Johnson (Smallville), Matt Gordon (Rent-A-Goalie), Noam Jenkins (Flashpoint) and Melanie Nicholls King (The Wire).

Rookie Blue is executive produced by award-winning Tassie Cameron (Flashpoint), Ilana Frank (The Eleventh Hour, Would Be Kings), Noreen Halpern (Hung, Haven), John Morayniss (Hung, Haven) and David Wellington (The Eleventh Hour, Would Be Kings).

Viewers can catch up on all the entire first season of Rookie Blue at GlobalTV.com.

Thanks so much for this awesome article!! Love to hear their success hi-lighted. I'm so glad they got such strong early support from Canwest.

This makes me want tomorrow to get here all the more:

Yes, they are doing fantastic! :Congrats:

And this despite the fact that there was virtually no promotion for the show.

The sad thing is that I don't think it has performed quite as well in the States... hopefully the Canadian success will keep it afloat across the board!

I have read analytical articles about the summer shows in the USA. The author believes that if RB were on the cable channel, they would have been a big hit.
Unfortunately, I can't find the link.

With zero promotion from the ABC, they are still doing great.

A lot of network critical darlings do much worse, and Rookie Blue kicked the crap out of all the other scripted shows ABC tried this summer. So they're doing OK even by tough Hollywood corporate standards.

There's an article I posted in General Discussion that made a similar case for RB....that if it had been a cable show it would have been a hit! You're completely right...ABC has hardly done ANY promotion for Rookie Blue. Hopefully this will change next year.

Thanks for sharing this! It's great to know that RB is such a success in Canada!

Couldn't agree more.

By the way, RB will be broadcast in Russia, too. Show already has a lot of fans here.
Looks like series are well sold around the world.

The part that freaks me out is that it's gotten no press from ABC, but also no love from sites like E!Online and TV Guide. It's gotten some from tv.com, etc, but those are big sites for trending shows in the US, even if they're critic darlings/cult favorites.

I'm just hoping that it's popularity in Canada and other countries helps keep it at the forefront at ABC - I never trust the big networks to "do the right thing" and keep good shows on air! We'll just have to keep up the Twitter fandom. :-)

yeah, that is a bummer. EW has awful taste. You'd think E!Online would've given it some more love. TV Guide still seems like it's for old people to me even though they've made a big attempt to rebrand.

Well, they did slightly better than last week, but football killed them. I noticed in the LA Times yesterday, that the later more accurate ratings put RB down around 40th in ratings for the week, where it had been in the top 20 earlier in the season.

TV Ratings Thursday: NFL Kickoff Soars, Vampire Diaries Falls

Quote:

Say what you will about Brett Favre, he’s ratings gold. The NFL Kickoff Game on Thursday night was the highest rated regular season primetime NFL game in 13 years in the preliminary metered market ratings.

NBC’s NFL Regular Season Game 1: Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints posted a 9.5 adults 18-49 rating from 8:30-11p in the fast affiliate overnight ratings. We’ll post the far more accurate time zone adjusted ratings for the game as soon as we have them.

Outside of the NFL universe, the CW’s Vampire Diaries second season premiere scored a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating (that’s down 24% from the series premiere last year). While the series premiere of Nikita drew a 1.4 adults 18-49 rating, that’s identical to Supernatural’s season premiere in that timeslot last season.

On ABC, the 2 hour season finale of Rookie Blue drew a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating, that’s up a tenth of a ratings point from last week’s series low 1.1 rating.

Ya I agree with what you guys are saying. If ABC spent a bit of money on advertising the show in a similar way to USA(with Burn Notice, White Collar etc) they could for sure drum up some great viewership.
And I know in the past some networks send early copies of episodes to columnists at E! and even TV Guide, so there are definitely ways to get the word out there.

Travis Milne and Gregory Smith took a couple of minutes to have a chat with me; after teasing me about my lack of voice, the guys tell me filming has been "a dream come true" and they're thrilled that people are watching and enjoying the show. As we say goodbyes, I'm completely smitten and already trying to figure out how I can visit the set and do a feature on the show.

And Lyric got a shout out at the IT Lounge gift suite. Photo of him with some new kicks:
