I love this movie, Ben is so good in it. I think that the bond between his character and the daughter of his cousin is so sweet, he cares more for the girl than her own father.

I totally agree the relationship with his cousin´s wife was a big no-no.

I think that both of them were really dissapointed by him and feeled betrayed. They both were very vulnerable at this point and needed solace from each other. Plus, him taking drugs and drinking made him taking the wrong choices.

OK, I haven't watched the extended version yet. But based on the shorter one and a scene that's in Ben's Demo reel (where he says "He's got you. He won."), I get the feeling that maybe they dated briefly before she married his cousin. I think he's secretly been in love with her for a long time. That between his bond with his cousin and his love for their daughter, he's been a pretty tortured soul and that maybe that's why he became kind of a screw up and drank too much & did drugs while undercover. I think that's why they give in to temptation when they both feel so let down by Patrick--there's always been something simmering between them.

I can't wait to see the whole thing to see if that theory makes sense. Thanks so much again for the link and for starting a thread just for this movie. It SO deserves lots of discussion. I think it's by far Ben's best work, and I can see why he got a Gemini nomination for it. By the way, Geminis are the Canadian equivalent of Emmys, right?

You´re right they have definitely some kind of history together. When I watched the movie, I had the feeling that both of them have feelings for each other. Than in their most vulnerable moment those feelings broke through.

I've only watched the edited 90 minute version so far, and I have to admit - I fast forwarded through a bunch of it. I was SO BORED. I think maybe the full miniseries would be way better - the 90 min was super choppy and undeveloped. The ONLY parts I liked were the relationship that Ben and his cousin's daughter had. And of course I liked Ben's scenes with Stana.

Hopefully if I get a chance to watch the longer one I'll like it more?

It was disjointed in parts, and I skipped some parts too on multiple viewings. But the first time through nothing bored me.

What about the scene Ben does with Matt Gordon (Shaw)? I thought that was AWESOME! Loved that showdown! It was a bit of an abrupt in the condensed form, but I was like "Whoa! Definitely no more Jamie the screw up here. This guy is serious and in charge." It was classic Ben.
I finally got a chance to watch the full version tonight. Wow, it's SOOOO much better!!! It's amazing how much they butchered it in condensing it from the original. WTF, why did they think it needed to be only 90 mins for the DVD anyway?? I don't get it. Beyond eliminating some critical story lines and connecting scenes that nail down motivations and reactions, they also cut a lot of cute scenes between Ben and Stana.

I liked the part with him and Matt Gordon, and 90% of his scenes. I guess I didn't like the other parts of the movie - and I really didn't like his cousin!

I'll have to watch the longer one.

Anyone else thought Ben had more chemistry with the blonde than Stana? and am not just saying that because of their sex scene :p I thought they would end up together given what happened with her husband.

Spoiler: click to toggle

As for Jules, I think he decided to pursue her as a part of turning his whole life around. I think he decided the psychological hold both Patrick and his wife had had on him all these years was what had led him into such a self destructive pattern.

I watched only the first part last night, but I got he same idea. at some point i kind of started to suspect that maybe the kid was his. IDK, just a gut feeling.

I liked what i saw until now. not the pest movie ever but way better than the endless stereotypical movies that some televisions are broadcasting. I mean, how many times a guy can get sequestrated? how many cops can have they're families murdered because of a case and then after going rogue, they get justice and all of the sudden everything is ok? really?

anyway, I don't like the wife. don't know why. probably because she's driving everybody crazy. they're in a middle of a big case and all she cares about is a stupid pool? newsflash lady, when you marry into a cop family your life is about busts, and investigations and such, not tea parties and private schools. her daughter was more mature that she was. at least in the part that i saw. i hope that she gets her act together in the second one but i don't think so.

one other thing that bothered me, but maybe i'll get the answer after: why didn't Jules reported what she saw in Jamie's house? and why was she so excited about going to a stupid movie? is not like they were bffs or something. they were partners for what a total of 2 days? strange behavior, especially from an IA cop.

Me too

I found it really ridiculous, when she asked Patrick about the pool color. I mean, who cares which shade of blue the pool has. Her husband has major problems and all she can think about is that stupid pool.

Oh and I think it´s so sweet when Jamie gives Stana her favourite chocolate :D I think he´s the only drug addict I find likeable :D

Finally managed to see the second part. Better then the first. I liked that he got his act together. TW's death was a wake up call. I totally liked the scene with Mat Gordon. It was like perfect.
In the end I was glad that Caitlin was ok and I asked myself about the money from the dollhouse (ok, it was a model-house or what ever but dollhouse sounds better).

And yes, the scenes with Stana were pretty awesome also. They don't have the same chemistry like with their respective co-stars from the series that they are working on right now, but still it was a good match. BTW, after seeing the second part I realized that Jules was that kind of all cheerful person, so I understood the excitement from the movie scene.

Anyway, all in all a good movie. Well written and well played. A little dark, but I think that that was part of the idea.

 I'm glad you liked the movie! Yeah...This isn't the typical type of movie I would go see either...since its kinda dark...but I enjoyed it as well. Mostly cause of Ben though....hahahah! :eyeroll: But to be fair, I think everyone was cast perfectly for their roles and did a great job acting their parts. I think Currie Graham who played the brother did a wonderful job as the corrupt cop. It was sad to see his demise from family man to murderer.

I agree with your question though...whatever happened to the money in the dollhouse?! Was it a plot device to signify something? Did I miss something in the movie?

And also did the cousin's wife (can't remember her name...) ever realize that Jaime was an accomplice to his cousin's "suicide"? :o
Yes, I thought the acting was excellent all around. I HATED the wife too, but I thought Natasha did an excellent job playing that brittle self-absorbed wife part. She and her husband were sort of a middle class ambitious version of Daisy & her husband in The Great Gatsby, very careless of the fallout of their actions on other people. Poor Caitlin and Jaime, getting caught up in the wake.

I'm torn about the money in the dollhouse. I think the intent is for it to be this big irony that after their lives are torn apart, the money ends up getting lost and neither Patrick nor his family end up fully benefiting from it long term. However, it seemed to me weird that Patrick wouldn't have left a note or done something to make sure that wouldn't happen before offing himself. Even if he was still furious with his wife, you'd think he'd do it for Caitlin or just so his sacrifice didn't end up being for nothing. As for a dollhouse in particular being the hiding place, I think that was intended to be symbolic of the folly of going to such lengths to try to build a superficially perfect life.

Even if Jaime never came clean about exactly what happened, I think she blames him for letting Patrick do that in her house. I think that's why she's so distant with him when he comes by the house at the end rather than turning to him in the crisis aftermath of the suicide and scandal. She also probably blames Jaime for the loss of face in going pubic with what Patrick had done, though she must down deep also be angry with Patrick for doing it and putting Caitlin in danger. But probably because she feels guilty for pushing Patrick to pay for things beyond their means, it's easier to blame Jamie.

I just finished watching the full version of Would Be Kings. I have to say, I really loved it: great casting & engaging story. Ben's performance was excellent, I can see why he got nominated for a Gemini on his work here. And after seeing this, it only makes me feel further convinced that Ben should be in more movies and go for starring roles that have more meat to them rather than doing guest stints on various shows.

Like many of you have said, I loved the relationship Jamie had with his neice. It was nice to see how they were both kind of a stable factor in each other's lives in spite of everything else happening around them.

The relationship with Jules & Jamie was cute, I enjoyed watching their scenes together. I wasn't really loving the wife, something about her irked me.

The Jamie & Jules relationship was so adorable! I love their scene outside the police station...where he's irked about her wanting to buy $3 specialty coffee. So then, he buys her cheap coffee from the outdoor food vendor....which she promptly tastes & throws away!! HAHAHA! :lmao:
I loved that part too. And the scene where they're looking at the tapes and Jules comments on the cute bartender, so Jamie fast-forwards through that part because he's jealous. Hahaha.

Loved both of those examples. How about when she trips on her heels and goes through the whole defensive rant ending in "I LIKE how they make me look!" and Jamie says, "Me too" So cute! I get the feeling there was a prior scene about that that was cut even from the 4-hour version. The first day Jamie joins IA in the desk next to Jules, her knee is all scraped up. You can see Jamie looking at it (and noticing she has nice legs :p ) but they don't show him asking about it.
