I found this interview with Tassie Cameron and thought that it´s really interesting. She tells a lot about the writing process and why she wanted to do a show like rookie blue.

Great article! Here's another article on how the Rookie Blue writers come up with the stories.

Rookie Blue Article about Writing the Stories

There are a lot of familiar people mentioned here including the writers and directors who have helped with the last few episodes. :D

Thanks! Tassie is awesome! The first season of Flashpoint was really good (and, Ben Bass was in episode 3!)

I can't wait to see more of her works!

Thanks for sharing these. Both were interesting reads. :)

Tassie did a radio interview with Jian Ghomeshi last year, back when Rookie Blue was still referred to as 'Copper', here is the link in case anyone wants to watch it on the QTV youtube channel:

Thanks for the link. It´s a really interesting interview.

I think, what´s great about Tassie, is that she is pretty straightforward with her answers. She doesn´t try to conceal her opinion, to get more appreciation from other people. She is very honest and says what she thinks.

For me, thats the reason why she´s such a good writer. All the characters, that she creates are so genuine and believable, so it´s a lot easier, to relate to them.

I've seen a few comments in different articles/reviews of the show (mainly Canadian sources) that complained how the show wasn't being overtly Canadian enough. Sure, they never explicitly state that the show is situated in Toronto. But the background landscape, the street names...all of that allows the setting to speak for itself without directly having 'Toronto' splashed over the police cars or stitched on the uniforms. Some reviewers have just been very nit-picky about that...I had to throw my own two cents out there.

In an interview, one of the cast members (I think it was Gregory Smith) said that this was done on purpose because it could take place anywhere

Interesting article on the success of summer series. Summer Scripted Programming Still Cable's Domain

Quote:

The somewhat ballyhooed notion early in the summer that this was to be the “summer of scripted” where the nets would air more original scripted content on broadcast television didn’t pan out. Only ABC’s Rookie Blue could claim success, and by broadcast standards it was only modest. Though had Rookie Blue been on cable and gotten the same numbers it would’ve been declared a hit.

Similar kind of summer wrap up article: Summer TV's Winners & Losers

Quote:

Most of us mourn the passing of summer. Not the major broadcast networks. They rejoice. They dance upon its grave.

The broadcasters can hardly wait for the big fall rollout of new shows in a few weeks. That's because, for the most part, they suck wind during the warm-weather season. This year, they did collectively manage to keep ratings stable, but try as they might, they just couldn't conjure up any fresh hits or major buzz.

Quote:

ABC did have one scripted success story. The Canadian-produced cop series "Rookie Blue" attracted 7.3 million viewers and has been renewed for a second season.

Thanks for the article! Funny thing is, the only two shows I watched this summer were both Canadian shows: Rookie Blue and Flashpoint.

Note to US writers - give us better summer shows!!!

Good to see it acknowledged as the stand out success anomaly. US network standards are brutal in terms of ratings expectations. So when they call the success modest, you have to keep that in mind.

It's nice to see that it did so well! I still remember when I first heard about the S2 pick-up (think it was through Missy or Greg's twitter) and being shocked that it was renewed after only 3 episodes had aired.

I know we've already guessed that its a big no-no about TOs and Rookies hooking up. But its good (okay not for us Sandy fans... :ermm: ) to hear it from Missy P. herself in this June interview. http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/06/21/rookie-blue-set-visit-toronto/

Quote:

"Rookies are never supposed to date their training officers," explains Peregrym. "And you cannot date someone who's more than two rankings above you."

Quote:

Peregrym is coy about whether anyone breaks the rules. But really, how could they not? "Regardless of the rule, it's difficult not to feel a connection with your training officer," she says.

Adam at TVDoneWright just tweeted a link to an old interview he did with Greg:

Quote:

TVDoneWright Speaking of #RookieBlueTV , I interviewed Greg Smith (Dov) @gregorythesmith before the series premiered. Check it out http://bit.ly/bPncs9

Love this part:
Quote:

Adam: How did you get involved with Rookie Blue?

Greg: It was the last script I read during 2009’s pilot season. The characters leaped off the page and the entire script had a tremendous energy. But most important, I LOVED Dov. I was finishing his sentences before page 15. That doesn’t happen very often; when it does you must do something about it. Thus began my campaign for the gig!

Adam: What can we expect from Rookie Blue?

Greg: An emotionally driven and funny show about five rookie cops that is not cynical.

Adam: Think fast: give me a tag-line for the show.

Greg: Rookie Blue: Arresting television. Kidding…kind of. (laughs)
