It all comes to been able to relate to whatever your watching.Like bonding with a character you want to able to recognize landmarks, places, and think yeah its just like my hometown.I hate to say this but as a Canadian, I still find Americans have a lot of stereotypes of what being Canadian is.We live right next door, speak the same language yet its like we are a totally different entity. To be fair I can understand it a bit a show like Detroit 187 or whatever its called I can't relate to it, its set in Detroit in the trouble 80's, doesn't hold as much appeal for me.
I feel the opposite. I want to watch something set somewhere a little different. Rookie Blue being in Canada is a plus for me. And I LOVE Detroit 187 because it's set in a gritty, struggling Rust Belt city instead of being yet another show in NYC or LA (or even San Francisco, Seattle or Miami)
To me Toronto isn't all that different form cities in the US that's why so many studios use it as a backdrop for places in America. If I dropped RB in Saskatchewan or Nova Scotia then that would be different.I can agree with different locales instead of NY and LA.

Well, yeah, but you're Canadian. Even if Toronto isn't so different looking as a city, other than a few landmarks, there are subtle cultural things that come through. Like attitudes toward guns, etc. Every time one comes up, it's kinda interesting.

In the summer of 2008, Flashpoint became the first of several Canadian series picked up around the writers strike to premiere on an U.S. network, CBS. It became the first and only Canadian series success story here until the debut of Rookie Blue on ABC this summer. Now, Flashpoint has become the first of the Canadian imports to land an U.S. syndication deal in a complex arrangement with CBS and ION that will allow both Flashpoint's current U.S. network home, CBS, and its new one, ION, to air originals of the procedural about an elite tactical unit.

© Canadian Drama 'Flashpoint' In U.S. Syndi Deal, Will Air Originals On CBS And ION

It would be great if RB also get the deal in syndication. Good ratings are great, but syndication is an additional incentive for network to keep the series on the air.

CBS Picks Up Cop Drama Pilot From Richard Price And Robert De Niro

Quote:

CBS has made another drama pilot pickup, giving the green light to Rookies, an ensemble cop show from The Color of Money writer Richard Price. The project, about six NYPD rookies who balance their personal lives with learning the beat on the streets of Manhattan, is executive produced by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal through their Tribeca production banner as well as Price. CBS TV Studios, where Tribeca has a TV deal, is producing.

K, who else rolled their eyes after reading this article and had the thought of "pathetic" running through their head? I mean c'mon - sounds like CBS needed another show and Rookie Blue did so well in season 1 that they want to copy it (although since they don't have Ben Bass there is no point in watching :D )

Yeah, news of this showed up on twitter yesterday. I couldn't believe it. (though I don't know why I'm shocked since Hollywood ALWAYS copies anything that's successful. This just seemed more blatant than usual) I tweeted this to Tassie. She's too classy to jump in the fray and comment, at least so far.

RB_Phan @tassiecameron If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, how does it feel to be copied by Robert De Niro with his new "Rookies" pilot?

What a freaking cop out sorry about the pun. The thing is that it happens all the time. Even the same network does try and copy the success of another show. It is flattery but it never seems to work when they try and copy something that is a success. NBC did the same thing with Undercovers trying to copy Chuck with the Chuck and Sarah spy couple relationship. Undercovers was canceled after 13 eps. I agree that they don't have the gorgeous Ben Bass in their cast so it will not work.

Oh wow. Sounds like CBS is jumping on the bandwagon. Police dramas are all the rage right now, so I'm not surprised that they would go with this angle of the rookies. But, I am disappointed that another show might steal RB's thunder or that it might get lost in a sea of cop shows. Do we know when this new rookie show is airing? Hopefully not summer!

I think we only know that a pilot has been ordered. That doesn't even mean it will make the schedule for sure. Networks don't usually decide which of the pilots they ordered they'll go with this far ahead of the upfront presentations to advertisers in May.

Saw the interview. Sucks the guy didnt ask anything about Rookie Blue. He seemed to talk more about himself than ask Melanie any questions. Plus getting her name wrong sucked.

Quote:

In the summer, Missing will join two Canadian scripted series, the recently picked up untitled medical drama set in Afghanistan and Rookie Blue, which will be returning for a second season. Last summer, ABC also ran 3 original scripted series, Rookie Blue, The Gates and Scoundrels.

So far it looks like ABC determined about summer schedule for RB.

Via Chuck on twitter, a Financial Times profile of the E1 CEO. Good to hear that RB has the attention of the dude at the top:

Interesting article about Entertainment One chief executive Darren Throop and a mention of #rookiebluetv" href="http://twitter.com/search?q=%23rookiebluetv">#rookiebluetv S2 http://bit.ly/f41RMC

The chief executive of Entertainment One since 2003, 46-year-old Darren Throop oversees the multimedia group behind the overseas expansion of the Peppa Pig brand and distribution of the Twilight films in Canada and the UK. He is based in Toronto.

● I get up by 6am and go straight down to the basement of our Toronto house, where we have a gym. I like to get in a run on the treadmill before the day starts. While I’m training, I watch an eOne film or TV show – it’s a good chance to stay current on what we’ve got in production and what we’ve recently acquired.

Our TV police drama Rookie Blue has just wrapped its second season, so I’ve been watching that recently.

● At about 6.45am I come upstairs and cook breakfast for my two daughters. We’re a big oatmeal family. They leave for school at 8am, at which point I flick on the computer in my home office so I can scan the inbox for anything needing immediate attention.

● In Toronto, I try to split my time between eOne’s two offices in the city. It’s important that we get to sit down as a team and see each other face to face – the water cooler or coffee-pot chat can be as important as anything else in a business.

● While I’m driving to work, I have a hands-free call with my chief finance officer, who lives in London. We have a nice relaxed chat about what has transpired over the past 24 hours and any key issues we are dealing with.

If I’m not on the phone, I listen to audiobooks – I’m trying to brush up on my Spanish at the moment.

● Once I have arrived at the office, my days are packed solid with a mix of meetings and conference calls, although I do try to keep my assistant from booking anything before 10am. That allows me time to answer e-mails and scan the trade press.

● Every couple of days I chat with the head of our divisions in film, music, television and distribution. A lot of meetings are about reviewing the performance of a product – for example, last month we released the animated feature film Gnomeo & Juliet, so we’ll sit down and talk about audience numbers and how many screens it’s on.

This morning, we had a meeting about Peppa Pig, which has just launched in the US – we’re looking for a toy deal at the moment.

I see my main role as having strategic oversight of the business, rather than getting involved in creative decisions at a granular level.

I try to stay high-level in the way I manage, because we have business leaders that are very skilled in their various disciplines and I want to give them the reins to make their own decisions.

● If I’m travelling – say, in London, New York or Los Angeles – I’ll probably have lunch with a board member to keep them updated on the flow of business or meet with key customers. But when I’m in Toronto, I generally work through lunch and have a salad at my desk.

● In the afternoon, it’s more meetings and conference calls. I try to finish the office day by 5pm so I can be home for dinner around 6pm. I have to be away for eight to 10 weekends a year, so I try to spend time with the family when I’m in the city. However, evenings can be busy with film premieres, charity dinners and awards ceremonies. Last week I was at the opening reception of Prime Time in Ottawa, a TV producers conference, and the week before it was the Canadian Film Centre fundraising dinner.

● When I’m travelling, my timetable is very full. We have several offices and it’s important to spend time with my senior staff wherever they are.

I’m in London frequently because a lot of our business is in Europe, but I also visit New York and LA to see our creative and selling divisions, and Cannes for the film and TV festivals.

● I always fly overnight and try to sleep on the journey so that I don’t lose a day travelling. It’s hard to keep your energy up when you are jet-lagged and working long hours on the road, but one of my favourite things about the job is interacting with all the different people who work for eOne – from our production people to the sales and marketing professionals we have in every division.

I'm a fan of it being a summer show, I just wish summer would hurry up and get here! I think ABC is giving it the best shot it can have... Hopefully they'll promote it well. Thanks for posting that info!

Rookie Blue - Missy Peregrym Interview.

Quote:

(UC) In the first episode Andie finds herself at the beginning of a triangle relationship with two male cops, the good, squeaky clean detective and the undercover, rough around the edges tough guy. In real life would you go for the nice guys or the guy your mum wouldn’t want you to bring home?

(MP) I think those are two extremes. I think I’d want them meshed together, that would be the ultimate obviously. I think I’ve dated both. I remember my Dad being like ‘what are you doing?’ You know, a guy full of tattoos. And you also have the super nice guy, but sometimes it gets really boring, like, okay, I’m a bit crazier than this. You try to find that equal balance where you can have a lot of fun and maybe get into trouble but not too stupid.

Such classy answer! :D
Missy is wonderful as always. :flower:

Yes, another great interview from Missy! Even though it's old, there were a couple new tidbits. I loved her answer to the dating question too. This part about Matty was cute too:
Quote:

(UC) Is there a particular person that’s the most fun to be around on set?

(MP) I think we all have our moments of stupidity for sure that is enjoyable for everybody, but Matt Gordon [laughs], every time we work together we get into trouble, all the time. We’re always too loud or laughing too much. I think everybody’s actually very goofy, that’s another reason why it works, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

TV Review from The Guardian newspaper in the UK. The Guardian is one of the broadsheet newspapers. So if Rookie Blue gets a review in it, it must be doing something good.
