Showbiz: Missy’s ready for the next big thing

Missy Peregrym may be the lead actress of a new cop series, Rookie Blue,
but it’s all leading up to the next step in her career, writes NUR AQIDAH AZIZI

CANADIAN-BORN actress and model Missy Peregrym has come a long way.

Starting her career in modelling at the age of 18, Peregrym’s no stranger to the advertisement industry but she took a different turn in her career in 2000 to try her hands at acting.

Her debut was on television series Dark Angel and she spent several years appearing in TV roles, including episodes of The Chris Isaak Show, Black Sash, Jake 2.0, Smallville, Tru Calling, Life As We Know It, Andromeda, and in the made-for-TV film Call Me: The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss.

Peregrym continued to carve her name in acting by playing a lead role in 2006’s Stick It, about a rebellious teenager who is forced to return to her former life in gymnastics but ends up liking her old life and continues to live it.

Then she was offered to play illusion-generating Candice Wilmer on the television series, Heroes, and was cast in television series Reaper as the female lead.

Aiming to broaden her horizon, Peregrym will again become the lead actress of new cop series, Rookie Blue, in which she will play Andy McNally.

The 13-part series is about the journey of five young rookie officers from the police academy.

It will also feature Gregory Smith, Charlotte Sullivan, Enuka Okuma and Travis Milne.

A cop show is still a cop show, so what was it about Rookie Blue that made you sign on?
I am really attracted to the show as it is more character-driven, which is interesting. Unlike other cop shows, which are focused on the procedures of the job, Rookie Blue is something to watch out for.

Now that the show has premiered in the United States and Canada, are you happy with the results?
Yes, I’m so excited that people like the show. The response has been so positive, and this is definitely by far my favourite project.

Have you had any feedback from real cops?
That’s really funny actually. I’ve had to cross the border quite a few times between the United States and Canada in the last few months. The officers ask me what’s happening with one of the characters on the show, and they’re really into the storylines. They continually tell me that they always get together to watch the show.

I was a bit nervous playing an officer because I was worried everyone was going to laugh at me. So the fact that they’re going along with everything and are really into it is a huge achievement.

Have you ever considered being a police officer when you were growing up?
I have never considered that. I think it would’ve been very hard for me to be a real cop. I’m emotional, I don’t think I can separate my job and my personal life.

What’s the toughest part about playing a police officer?
The writers have done such a good job because there’s a good balance of emotion and vulnerability. I never really knew how to handle a situation properly, and I think that’s true of all the characters anyway.

When you were rehearsing for your role, what was the hardest to get used to and what seemed to come naturally to you?
Scenes involving handcuffs are difficult. Every time handcuff is involved, I get insecure and worried, because I waste a lot of time on that (laughs). But the easiest thing for me is drawing the guns, and we have a lot of competitions on set to see who can reload and draw our fake guns fastest. They’re just plastic and we can’t do anything with them, but we certainly tried to look really cool and knowledgeable about them (laugh).

What’s the biggest rookie mistake that you’ve made on the show?
I don’t know how real officers carry the weight of firearms around with them and still do what they do.

And tackling people — I can see why stunt people are hired. I had bruises for six months, for falling on my hardware.

You wear a cop uniform on the show but what’s your personal style?
Well, I’m pretty boring actually — jeans, T-shirt, hat. I’m not as girly as I think. Sometimes I dress up, and it’s really very basic. I really love wearing uniform on the show. But if I am on the red carpet, I like to wear sexy clothes. I don’t really like the floral stuff. I love Kate Beckinsale’s style. I love how she dresses on the red carpet.

You started as a supporting cast in a few famous series such as Heroes and Reaper. Now that you’re a leading star, do you have any kind of pressure?
I’ve been doing this for almost nine years, and I’ve been fortunate to be a part of the programmes I am already in, but they are leading to the next thing for me.

And when I wasn’t working, I would audition like crazy. It would be so close — it would be down to me and one other person and he/she would get it and it’s frustrating.

But you have to keep trying and eventually you’ll find the right fit. This job is a dream for me, it’s exactly what I wanted to play — I am so excited to play a female lead on a show.

If you really want something, you just have to keep going and there’s a season for everything. Things always get better if you keep going.

What is the biggest stunt or action and the coolest thing that you did on the show?
I try to do as much as I can, but some stuff is just too dangerous. I had a really cool stunt girl who was so brave. She didn’t care what she had to do. She made me look very good. But the coolest thing I did was to smash a fake window made of candy, and no, you can’t eat it.

In real life, if you’re feeling blue on a typical day, what do you do to chase the blues away?
Oh, I sleep a lot. I have a dog, so I love going for runs with her and I like playing basketball.

Awesome! Yes, there should definitely be some photos coming from an event like that. I was surprised he didn't go to any TIFF functions, so I'm glad to hear Ben's getting out to an industry event. :YAY:

I'm sure he was on TIFF functions. He's simply very good at avoiding media attention, just like on a professional level. :uhh:

I know right? Not too shabby! I was laughing on twitter about Canadian TV producers and their fetish with HAWT characters named Sam. This photo with them both is just smokin'!! : :yahoo:
