Rookie Blue returns with a bang by Ivey West

Last season's surprise hit 'Rookie Blue' starts off its sophomore season with a great episode. These guys are no longer rookies, but can they overcome one of their own getting shot?

The AV Club, which is for pretty hardcore critics, had a review up already last night, but I was too tired to start the thread when I read it. It's not gushing, but for someone who's not into soapy shows and didn't watch s1 past the pilot, he still found a lot he liked.

http://www.avclub.com/articles/rookie-blue-butterflies,58042/

Excerpts:
Quote:

While I don’t know how I would have responded to the first season had I stuck with it, I think the second season starts in a very solid place. With the “trainees” now cops in their own right, still rookies but with definite experience under their belt, they struggle with what they’re supposed to do, precisely. Flying solo on what is supposed to be a routine crowd control gig, a shooting shatters any sense of routine, and sparks an investigation that has Officers McNally and Epstein (Missy Peregrym and Gregory Smith) each striving to do something, anything, to help justice be done in the wake of this tragedy.

Peregrym and Smith - both of whom I quite like here - are the right people to bear the weight of this particular storyline, and their arcs in the episode are well-drawn. I like how McNally’s eager unpacking at Luke’s apartment manifests itself in her work, and how what starts as simple eagerness becomes almost life-sustaining after being shot in the vest and feeling responsible for the girl’s death. Similarly, Epstein’s desire for more action gets sidetracked when he gets put into the ambulance with the victim, but he starts to realize what role he could play beyond high-speed chases as he fights to solve the crime in time for the victim’s organs to be donated. These are not complicated storylines, but the actors portray them well, and the themes are very well suited to police officers in their position.

.............................
...there were some strong individual moments here that elevate this beyond “generic.” Sure, some of the scenes didn’t string together particularly well, but McNally and Shaw returning to her first day had some nice resonance, and McNally’s baton takedown of the killer was surprisingly badass. I also thought the direction on the initial shooting was really well done, as it had a visceral and stylish quality that I didn’t expect from the show. There was nothing new about the way it was shot, but it did register as a shock after what seemed like a tame and ‘generic’ start, and set the tone for what would follow. All of these scenes, and more, also felt like they were building on previous story developments, getting past those initial introductions and taking these characters to a new space: although the show still has that procedural core, there’s some serialization going on here, and that seems to be adding some considerable depth to its characters.

I wish that they would get the names straight! Either show the lines as "Jenkins" and "Johnson" or "Barber" and "Callaghan". This just looks unprofessional.

Yeah, that bothered me too. I've found many of those who cover entertainment are shockingly sloppy.

First review of ep202 What Might Have Been is up already on the examiner.com site.

Rookie Blue Looks at What Might Have Been

Excerpt:
Quote:

This episode dealt with possibilities that the cops of the 15 Division have open to them. The writers once again managed to weave the lives of the various cops into the overarching plot of the cases of the episode. Rookie Blue doesn’t just focus on Andy, and the writers are showing that by building up backgrounds and offering a better look into the lives of the other cops of 15 division.

First review of ep 203 Bad Moon Rising is already up.

Rookie Blue Gets Supernatural

Excerpt:
Quote:

Rookie Blue’s latest episode, “Bad Moon Rising,” had a definite supernatural element to it. In case you missed that, the quote above hints at it. It was a nice touch by the writers to add some levity to what turned into a very, very serious episode. Most of the were-humor was delivered by Sam in his normal funny way. Do you not remember the hen weigh joke from when he and Andy were on prisoner transportation last season? However, the werewolf/zombie/full moon humor weren’t the only funny elements to the episode.

Gail Peck and Dov Epstein, or Peckstein, were back in action! Anytime these two characters interact it is pure genius, partly because their characters are polar opposites. Gail is laid back, and some might say not so nice, while Dov is a very eager, pepped up person. This episode did feature a touching moment between the two, when Gail goes into the boy’s locker room and hugs Dov. It is safe to say that it was one of the highlights of the episode. Gail is never shown as being one for hugging, and Dov’s face was just priceless.

Great Review

Excerpt
Quote:

I like Luke, I really do. But Sam and Andy have some intense chemistry. You could see it as Sam slammed on that door until it opened. He was frantic to get to her. Or how about the fact that Andy smiles when she's with Luke, but she laughs when she's with Sam?

Rookie Blue' 'Bad Moon Rising' recap: The job follows Andy home

Quote:

Rookie Blue's second season continued with the third episode, "Bad Moon Rising," tonight. There was some happy news for one of the rookies, but anything could happen on a full moon, and they needed to be prepared.

Yeah just had that thought that did something weird happen with Andy accepting the "proposal". Could we put that down to the affects of the full moon. In her lapse in judgement in accepting Jo's ring.

Long-time RB fan Layne Morgan, who's been live tweeting the show from the beginning, has a gig reviewing RB for Blast Magazine. Here's her first review of the first three episodes:

"Rookie Blue" First Three Episodes Reviewed

Excerpt:
Quote:

Just three episodes into the season and we’ve already had two officers down on Rookie Blue. Don’t forget an engagement and a fairly numerous amount of sexual advances from more than one direction. The great thing about Rookie Blue, however, is not found in the things that surprise you but in the things we keep coming back for; the friendships, the building back stories, the budding relationships, and the things that the characters experience as cops that we as viewers experience in our own lives.

The Examiner has a short review of ep 204 'Hearts and Sparks'

Rookie Blue Sends Sparks Flying
Excerpt:
Quote:

Arson is the crime of this episode, and it gets underway with the Rookies trying to contain and process a crime scene where a Laundromat burned. In addition to the actual fire and sparks that comes along with a fire, Rookie Blue delved further into relationships, specifically with the sparks of being in love and what it means to be in love with someone.

ROOKIE BLUE “Hearts And Sparks” Review

Quote:

Even though this storyline was extremely minor, essentially bookending the episode, it was, for me, the most successful attempt to create believable conflict. Probably because Callaghan and his old flame Rasati have genuine chemistry: her no-nonsense attitude and his old-timey manners are surprisingly suited to one another. Both the actors and the writers have done a fine job in barely any time at all showcasing this. I particularly loved her balloon popping hospital nursing methods, which made her out to be fun, and not the villainous ‘other’ seen in so many other tellings of the triangle love affair.

Rookie Blue Review: Crash & Burn?

Quote:

She's a good detective, still in love with Luke and... a possible psycho? Okay, that classification may be a little harsh, but did you see the death glare she gave Andy? And did you catch this exchange?

To summarize: Luke's engaged to Andy. Sam's in love with Andy and Jo looks as though she's had enough of this doe-eyed rookie.

I hope Andy doesn't have a pet rabbit because Jo's beginning to resemble Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction
