Rookie Blue Review: Moment of Doubt
It was time for equine training on Rookie Blue and those horses made things interesting for our officers, as "Brotherhood" brought loyalties into question and feelings to the surface.

This episode wasn't quite so Andy-centric, but it was satisfying nevertheless. Andy was working on her lone wolf status as she turned down her riding instructor when he hit on her. It was a smart move. She needed the time to clear her head and the training got her away from both Luke and Sam.

Although... did you catch that lingering look at the station when Frank made them turn to the person next to them and remind themselves that that person deserved their best? Andy practically blushed and Sam couldn't take his eyes off her.

ROOKIE BLUE “Brotherhood” Review

Quote:

here were some other interesting parts: Noelle and Frank finally kiss. Noelle’s desire to have a baby has been an admirably original plot line which, for all its uniqueness, has never really filled me with interest. Her relationship with Frank, on the other hand, really does and the writers have done a great job pacing this subplot over the length of a few episodes, not drawing it out painfully, but rather letting it organically take its course. It’s great to see characters who could be one-note minors get fleshed out and truly defines Rookie Blue as an ensemble show.

Rookie Blue explores brotherhood

Oliver: “I did some break dancing in my teens.”

Sam: “You never did any break dancing.”

Sam and Oliver’s friendship is something that has been there but never really shown in detail, until now. Seeing their relationship was cute, and just a new thing to explore on Rookie Blue. Plus, any scene with the two of them in it is instantly hilarious.

Reviews for 2.10- Best Laid Plans:

Rookie Blue Review: A Good Plan Gone Wrong
TVFanatic.com

You could tell that Swarek's plan to go back undercover shook her. Was he doing it because he loved the work or to get a reaction out of Andy? I'm guessing a little bit of both. Or perhaps working so closely with her day in and day out was just becoming too much for him.

[On Gail/Chris/Dov] What made it worse was that they all live together and work together. It's like a giant pressure cooker ready to blow and I'm not sure who will survive the fallout.

Rookie Blue plans ahead
Examiner.com

[The episode] jumps ahead towards the ending and does flashbacks. It’s not a new concept for TV shows, but it is something new for Rookie Blue. Having this episode being all about planning and having the episode roll out in reverse almost is quite an interesting combination. Oh, and it works

It’s nice to see how different Sam and Andy are, and that the writers spent a good bit of this episode showcasing their difference in philosophies.

'Rookie Blue' 'Best Laid Plans' recap: Actions have consequences and missed opportunities

Quote:

Rookie Blue continues this summer with "Best Laid Plans," season 2 episode 10. Things may start heating up between Andy and Sam, but it looks like things are going to be cooling down between Gail and Chris, all because of Dov.

Excerpt from Best Laid Plans Review
Daemon's TV

Out of a second season which provided many strong episodes, this was probably my favorite. [...] it was just such a satisfying, well laid out, interestingly structured episode which was not afraid to break out of the safe confines in which the show has built and it trusted that their audience was smart enough to keep up with the time jumps and edited in a way which made those jumps smooth and non-jarring. Most importantly, it told a really good story, or rather a series of really good stories within a bigger story, so that the episode itself reminded me of one of those Russian dolls.

It's nice to see a TV critic who wasn't really prone to be a fan of Rookie Blue being won over.

Quote:

There are only three episodes left of this season of Rookie Blue, and it has been a wonderful summer for the show which, frankly, I was not too fond of last year, mainly because it veered too often into melodrama, between Andy’s love triangle and her clichéd ridden alcoholic father who used to be the man on the police force who she was now burdened with, the show felt like an amalgamation of other shows and never really moved out of its box and became its own thing.

However, the second season changed my opinions of the show. It started off strongly, and only got stronger as the show subverted expectations for the clichéd and instead brought on interesting cases while developing their tertiary characters, keeping the core characters front and center, giving them, for the most part, interesting things to do and arcs which complimented the actors’ talents. In short, the second season really built up the world of Rookie Blue and though I sound like a huge nerd, I’m a sucker for world building.

Reviews for 2.11- "A Little Faith"

Rookie Blue wants you to have faith
Examiner.com

One thing that constantly annoys me in some television shows, and Rookie Blue has been guilty of this in the past, is not establishing time lines. Thankfully this episode did not fall prey to that.
. . .
In addition to the Sam and Andy hook up (rejoice Sandy fans), another more subtle storyline with Dov was going on. He manages to find someone was knew his brother Adam. Adam committed suicide, and [...] This was a nice character back story moment for Dov, although it could have been expanded more because it is essential to who Dov is today. However, even the glimpse we are given is nice.

Rookie Blue Review: Sandy Alert!
TV Fanatic

As disappointed as I was in Andy when she told the dealer they had to call an ambulance (what dealer wants an ambulance at his place?), I loved how badass Traci was when she made up the story about the girl's biker boyfriend. Looks like undercover work might end up in Traci's future. That girl can think on her feet.
. . .
Sam and Andy went from hot and sexy to cute and funny, and right back to hot and sexy again. Sigh. All I can say is that I want more. A lot more.

What's that sound? Oh yes, I believe it's all Sandy fans around the world cheering. Rookie Blue sent my little shipper heart beating wildly, as the show finally went there.

Not only was the love scene incredibly hot, the aftermath was funny and sexy and everything I expected from Sandy.

2.11 Review:
ROOKIE BLUE “A Little Faith” Review
Daemon TV

Rookie Blue is a show about relationships, not cases. So who cares if the central case did not really make a lot of sense?
. . .
We still got to see Swarek and McNally having sex…or so I assume, since this is ABC not HBO and we mainly got to see a few shots of Swarek’s back and OMG! Was that a bra? Ooh! Their meeting at the Alpine was totally contrived, totally implausible and yet, I didn’t care. This season, as far as I’m concerned, the show has really strived to improve itself and it has succeeded to the extent where if they want to bend reality for the sake of a midnight romp, I’m all for it.
. . .
While not as good as last week’s cracker of an episode, which I do think was the best the show’s ever done, this was still a solid entry and set up the finale quite nicely: McNally, Epstein, Swarek, Nash, Frankie, Noelle: they all seem so happy. Generally, when people are in a state of bliss on television, something really really bad is about to go down.

2.12- On The Double- Review

TV Fanatic

Rookie Blue Review: "On the Double"
What the heck was Sam thinking? He knew the dangers of undercover work and yet he called Andy anyway. I didn't see that coming. This boy's got it bad.
[...]
As Brennan drove Andy around and asked her about JD, I remember thinking she should have been more vague about the football question. I wished she'd deflected it by saying they'd spent all their time in bed. That certainly would have been safer for both of them.

2.12: God's Good Grace- Review (Excerpt)
TV Fanatic: Rookie Blue Season Finale Review: Andy to the Rescue?

I was really disappointed in Chris when he opened his big mouth and told Pete about Andy's personal business. Although I didn't think he was trying to be mean, I just think there are moments when Chris isn't very bright.
[...]

Gail was back to true form in this episode and I absolutely loved it. How much fun was her conversation with Detective Armstrong? Abrasive, blunt, and straight to the point, that's when Gail really shines.

And did anyone else think Gail was setting her sights on Luke? Now there's a pairing I hadn't considered.
[...]

Am I the only one who felt like Noelle and Frank were moving way too fast? Didn't they just have a first date? Now it's baby makes three?!? I'm all for seeing them happy, I just felt like we've skipped a couple of steps on the way there.
[...]

I was glad Swarek got his face time with Boyd at the end, but I really wanted to see the dirty detective hauled out in cuffs for covering up a murder and putting Swarek's life on the line. He surely would've pinned it all on Andy if Sam hadn't survived.

2.12/2.13 Review (Excerpt)
Examiner.com: Rookie Blue suspends 'til summer

The finale was a gripping, thrilling ride all the way to the happy ending. Overall, the twists and turns were handled nicely.

[. . .]

One of the best things about the finale, personally, is that it showed the Rookies working together and working on their own. It really shows how much they have grown, but they are still rookies and their former training officers, Oliver and Noelle, will be there to help them out. Oh, and a new rookie was introduced! [. . .] Towards the end when he and Andy are in the squad car, she gives him a play by play of what is going on in the house. That was just a nice touch, stylistically, and it also showed Andy take on a training officer role.

I found this one on twitter in the RookieBlueTV timeline! Thought I'd post it and share it with everyone. I definitely agree with this person in giving Rookie Blue an A++ report card for the season finale!
»McSwarek is endgame« | »McPeck Friendship Fan«
Gail: Carpe diem, seize the day, there's no time like the present, a stitch in time saves nine.
Dov: What does that mean?
Gail: I don't know something about sewing.
---------------------------------------------------
Sam: I'd be surprised big chicken coming at me

2.12/2.13: Review from Daemon's TV
ROOKIE BLUE “On The Double” & “God’s Good Grace” Review
Quote:

The series finale of Rookie Blue is upon us and after such a surprisingly stellar sophomore season for a show which, frankly, I was not at all impressed with in its first year, the back to back ending leaves much to be desired.
[. . .]
My main problem with these episodes is that they had so much potential insofar as relationships and dynamics and cases went that I think I might have expected much too much.
[. . .]
In the final episode there was so much at stake. [. . .] It wasn’t bad, by any means, but I was bored watching it. Maybe the show isn’t suited for a double episode slot. Forty minutes is fine, but eighty minutes seriously tests my attention span.

2.12/2.13:Excerpt from Film Thrasher

FTTV Reviews...Rookie Blue 2.12 & 2.13 "On The Double" & "God's Good Grace"
filmthrasher.com

If you haven't seen it yet, shame on you! Because by the end, Division 15 was definitely rattled.
[. . .]
I am onboard the whole 'Sandy' ship, but did anyone ele think it was too quick for them to be tangling under the sheets? Maybe it was too soon, or maybe it wasn't.
[. . .]
Guess the big question for season three is: what is normal? How are two suspended police officers going to have a normal relationship, while trying to earn their jobs back? How will their impeding relationship affect everyone around them?
[. . .]
9.5 out of 10
