Right now ABC has no openings so it would be if another series was doing really poorly.

Also, I'm not sure how that would work - what if ABC has a slot but Global doesn't?

As much as I am excited about the news, it also makes me a little nervous. There is less competition in the summer - and as I have said before, as much as it is a long wait from one summer to the next, I would rather it stay a summer series and go for more seasons.

If this happens we'll have to wait until September of 2012 to see season 3... I can't WAIT THAT LONG!! But, does this mean we'd get like a 20 episode season instead of 13?

No, that is not what it said. If a different series is failing, we could see it possibly around January 2012. If not, I think they are going to leave it as a summer series and we will see season 3 in June of 2012.

If they get a slot of failed show, they will be forced to fight against the huge autumn hits. For me bird in the hand is better than pie in the sky.

Can they go back to a summer series if the show doesn't do as well against other shows?

Episodes made for summer will be on air in late autumn or winter, so for summer is nothing left.

My god, what does this mean? Do they fill an open slot and just show it earlier or will it change into a regular series? Well, it may depend on the ratings for the rest of this season.

And it does show ABC appreciates the series and acknowledges its worth.

Its great that ABC see how great the show is but its a risky move too. Theres alot of competion in the fall shedule over in the USA and usually CBS wins the night with their shows is that right? Which could cause trouble for rookie blue even though its an amazing show against the likes of criminal minds, NCIS, NCIS LA and all the CSI its def risky. Though it might mean we get more episodes which is brilliant and it might get showen over in the UK quicker lol

If it did get moved i hope ABC dont cancell it because it wasnt No1 and doing well in the ratings and demos like it does in the summer as theres soooo much competion because that wouldnt be fair on the fans, actors, writers of the show

As much as I would like to see it on in the Fall or mid-season, there would be a lot more competition. If it did end up airing mid-season, it would take the slot of a show that did poorly so the time slot could be a dud. Also the chances of it actually happening are kind of slim. Like @Cythy said both ABC and Global would have to have the time slot available by mid-season.

First, remember that this came up in response to a tv critic's question. It wasn't an idea the new programming chief initiated. But his response means he's very happy with Rookie Blue. It probably also means that the negative feedback on several shows after the upfronts has ABC nervous about their new line-up. The other thing he said was that the Oscars are a great vehicle for launching shows in the spring.

I can definitely see everyone's point of view on it both negative and positive; given the chance to get some real exposure and possibly a few more episodes is a good thing in my books.I have a feeling now that since somebody has put a spotlight on Rookie blue success its a good bet that ABC will be pondering their next move.

Keep it in the summer! They'd have to go up against some major shows during the fall season. Summer time lots of repeats are going on and thats why they have such a good audience! I wouldnt want to see the show move to the fall bigger chance of being cancelled up against major shows!

My whole thing about this is, if it ain't broke don't fix it. As much as I would love for RB to have a higher episode count per season I'd much rather it continue in the summer and have a larger chance of getting more seasons. The show is doing really well in the summer. If they made the decision to move it then the only show it could replace is the Charlie's Angel's reboot (if it doesn't fair well in the demographics and ratings) which is going to air in the timeslot before Grey's Anatomy and it will have to compete against The Big Bang Theory, The Vampire Diaries, Community, and Parks and Recreation. That is if it gets a Thursday timeslot.

It has a potential for maybe a Wednesday timeslot if this were to happen because ABC had two new half hour shows that will be airing there. But then if that happens RB will have to compete against NCIS, 90210 (probably not a big deal for this show The CW has the lowest ratings of all the major networks), Glee, and The Biggest Loser.

There is also the potential it could get one of two Sunday spots if this were to happen. Once Upon a Time is supposed to get the spot before Desperate Housewives and idk if it's just me but the show looks like it's a bunch of good actors on a really bad show. But if RB were to get that timeslot it would be competing against The Amazing Race, The Simpsons, and Football. If Pan Am doesn't pan out (Sorry bad pun but I just had to) then if the spot were to be given to RB it would be competing against CSI Miami and Football.

Then to top it all off Rookie Blue would have to like probably almost double in it's demo's and ratings to compete against the bigger shows that have been airing and doing well in the Fall/Winter lineups.

Idk, I'm really not patient at all but I think I'd rather wait and have it air in the summer so we can have more seasons of RB as opposed to the potential for more episodes per season and taking the huge risk that season 3 would end up being the last season.

Wow, you sure do know your tv shows. I agree with you wholeheartedly, I don't want it moved if there is a chance that it can't compete against the other shows and gets cancelled. I'll keep re-watching Season 1 and 2 when the summer is over. This will give me my RB fix until S3 starts next June.

I really hope it doesn't get used as a mid-season replacement for something. When that happens, networks tend to rush production and then there's the possibility of it not being as good. Also, I agree with everyone that's stated that it does well as a summer show, but might not do well against the heavy hitting established series.

Maybe ABC will keep an eye on how USA's Psych does - it's being moved to Fall after being a VERY successful summer show, but they're not ordering any additional episodes.

I don't see it being picked up for a S4 as easily if it becomes a regular season show, and it's incredibly unlikely that ABC would order more than the 13 episodes they've been going with so far. Right now, it's probably a cash cow for them - super cheap because it's produced by Global, and they must get a bunch of ad revenue from it because it only runs 44 minutes, and gets decent (by summer standards) ratings. I can't see them changing that formula.

But, who knows! Maybe they'll take a risk, and order more episodes and have it run Jan - summer... then maybe we'd get more McSwarek!

The ABC shows most likely to flame out are the new guy comedies, and maybe Once Upon a Time, depending on execution. Charlies' Angels could too. What ABC might do is make a move with RB for the next season, since Desperate Housewives in only getting one more season. Who knows how much longer The Practice will run either, so they'll need a new soapy show before too long.

ETA: Is Fox moving Glee from Tuesday to Wednesday?

That's a good point and RB definitely has that soapy element from it's Character driven roots.

(As for Glee,I typed Wednesday but what I really meant was Tuesday. Those kinds of mistakes happen to me a lot).

There are SO many cop shows in the regular run, this sounds scary. I would LOVE to see it sooner (unless I can at least get an answer to Chris/Gail as back, elsd I probably wont come back anyways), but competition is hard, and a spring start has it's own issues, though isn't that what 24 did? Though coming in after football could be better. However, since it is on a 13 week, covering 6 months, rotation, time is going to get even more mixed up, I think they'd need to add one additional episodes and take care of that issue for it to work, but they're already ready for a summer line...so, they couldn't coordinate with holidays anyways. I don't know. Love to see it, but only if there was a failsafe of going back to summers if it didn't work.
