Do you think Sam/Ben was meant to be...

as big of a character as he is now? I'm not sure if it makes a difference with what order the cast's names are displayed on when the show starts, but he is the last one listed.

Either way, do you think Ben/Sam was originally planned to be on the show as much as he is? I wonder if the writers realized how much everyone loved him and made him basically as "main" of a character as the rookies. He gets a lot more scenes than the other TO's and the detectives but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the fact that Missy/Andy is the main character and he's obviously her partner.

Any opinions on this?! I have to say, if they didn't originally plan for him to be a main character, I'm sure as hell glad they changed it around. Episodes just feel incomplete without enough Sam Swarek!

ETA: I don't remember for sure if I've already started a thread about this subject before, but as far as I know, I haven't. If I did, I apologize and feel free to delete this one.

I think that Sam was always designed to be a focal point of the show. He and Andy were obvious from that first second, and as for his name being last, that often happens to actors with a larger body of work behind their names. Obviously this is just my opinion, but I think he is last billed because he is a "larger" name, so to speak?

Given the history between Tassie and Ben, I have a gut feeling that she thinks the world of him and would definitely create a main character for him. Missy and Ben anchor the show, that is why their names are first and last in the credits. Kind of like bookends, they hold the show together. JMHO.

Oh, thanks for the info about the first and last names on the list stuff. That's really interesting, I had no idea how that worked. I get the idea that Ben is a really versatile actor and would do above and beyond what he is asked, so I can totally see why Tassie would write so many Sam scenes for him.

I guess because the title of the show is Rookie Blue, I figured the "main" characters would've been the rookies, but Sam seems to be up there with them in the main category.

I've noticed this in a lot of other shows too. At first I was confused, because you'd think the more important characters would be first, but people always say that you always remember the things that came first and last. Sometimes the stuff in the middle gets a little lost.

I think the year they filmed the pilot that was picked up, Ben also had a lead role in a pilot that wasn't picked up. So it could be they structured the part so he could disappear if Ben wasn't available after all. But I think Tassie always hoped she'd be able to make him a big part of the show. Just my guess.

They do that on alot shows Grey's for example Patrick Dempsey's name comes last it's to show a respect because he is done more work than the other cast.

I think Sam was always suppose to be a main character but it also depended on the audience if we all would have like Luke better the show would have reduce his screen time and made Luke/Andy end game

I'm very glad that not everyone likes Andy/Luke because I can't imagine this show being about Andy/Luke.

Missy and Ben just have this awesome chemistry and you can't help but look forward to any scenes they would have because you are more likely to have sparks flying off - flirting or arguing.

Even if Ben wasn't supposed to have a big part in the show, I'm really glad that he does because he really brings it to life and he's funny. I want to see more scenes with Sam/Jerry/Oliver because they are just hilarious together and I want to know more about their past - maybe Sam could tell Andy? If there is no potential blackmail material ;)

I do think he was meant to be a main character. The 'and Ben Bass' suggests that Ben has a level of high regard and is particularly well respected. Usually the 'and' indicates an important actor, and is given only to the more respected / known or 'worthy' actors.

I agree with this, their scenes playing poker for example are just too funny :D What I'd like to see also is Ben and Jerry talk about their relationships because they're kind of similar even if Jerry crossed the line before Sam

Same here. I hope they will give us more boys screen times - even if it's just to talk about Sam and Andy being stupid over the UC bust up but at the same time, glad that they had finally gotten together.

I want Jerry/Sam scenes where they can compare stories of how they met Traci/Andy and how it impacted their lives. And I'd like to think that Jerry would tell Sam that he was the one who had to force Andy out of the cover apartment when she grew hysterical at the sight of the blood and the fact that Sam couldn't be located. It seems like something he would do.

More poker too! Sam and Oliver are just too cruel to Jerry :haha:
