A correction I don't mind - I actually like those. I was just confused because the person said it was boring = you don't like, don't review.

Now I am curious as to this story. Which is it? I hardly look at the author of a story until after I write the review so it isn't bias (especially with my favorites)

"Surprising Twist" and I've deleted all of the anonymous reviews for the chapter. The funny thing is, I always leave up anonymous reviews because I've used them when I can't log in for some reason and I know some people just don't have accounts. Honestly, I've written almost 100 stories and this is the first time I'm getting negative reviews like that.

Ya I suppose less people would be able to review that way eh? Well as long as you can delete them. Weird that this story is getting some negativity... I read the latest chapter days ago and it was very exciting.
Maybe some readers like something a bit fluffy.

Got a weird review to my TV story today. They thought Andy was being such a bitch that if they were Sam they'd shoot her and plead insanity.

I kind of chuckled when I first read it, but now I don't really know how to take it..

@SoWritten - Ya think?! I've written close to 100 stories and this is the first time I've gotten multiple nasty reviews. And some reviews which have made me realize that people a) don't read the author's note and b) don't read all the chapters before commenting.

I noticed that last night! People obviously don't read carefully enough. Some reviewer said something didn't make sense but it was explained in a previous chapter.
Making a nasty comment is so stupid - doesn't that just discourage people from doing fanfic?! And then you'd have nothing to read

Your positive reviews def outweigh the nasty comments so totally ignore them. Waste of energy.

Yah, I know right... These A/N's and previous chapters are there for a reason :ermm:

Nah, I just delete them, because I want to feel good about it. I don't mind criticism, but I hate trashing...

(In a way it's a pity you can't respond to reviews publicly).

I guess it depends on the fact how reviews do you get. I doubt that I will have the time to answer personally to 50-60 people. Since I post my stories in forum, I always answer to the reviews before posting the next chapter. I also thank to the lurkers who didn't leave comment.

In ff.net cases, I guess it's normal to answer to the ones that have questions regarding your story or your characters and their actions. Ah, nasty reviews are not that rear thing. Don't forget that people read a lot of stories and can easily mix the fics. It also depends on the time that you need to update your story. Of course I forget what happened if I get to read new chapter once a month. If it's updated every week it's far easier. Also some of them might not always understand English, so they might make mistake.

Then again if someone wants to leave review, they should be sure that they read the whole thing and if they indeed have question or comment they can do it in a civil way.

Totally agree about the A/N. And the deleting. Might be immature, but I delete at will if it bothers me enough.

I've been getting quite a few reviews from the same person on old fics, and for some reason, this person chooses to remain anonymous, so even though they ask questions and like to make multiple comments about my editing/grammar/etc, it's not as if I can respond. I refuse to take up valuable space in my already long author's notes to explain this to them again.

Especially since the problem they're commenting on really is unfixable. On ff.net, if it's been more than 60 days, the original document gets deleted. In order to fix it, I'd have to fix the original document and then upload and replace EACH CHAPTER. In the case of the Distance, this would send 20 "update" alerts to whoever checked that little box. Frankly, I'm unwilling to do that.

And yet, bc they choose to remain anonymous, I couldn't tell this person to quit pestering me. It was unbelievably frustrating.

So I turned off anonymous reviews for 24 hours bc I was tired of waking up every morning to 2-3 of these really frustrating comments. After the 24 hours, I turned them back on, and haven't heard a peep since.

So, as far as I'm concerned, delete whatever you want :)

Especially if they're bringing you down.

There actually is a way that you can get your document back into your documents on ff.net - save any document into ff.net and go into live preview and copy and paste (I did it once before).

And as for the anonymous reviews - based on the nasty reviews, I've disabled mine until I finish my current story and then I'll open it up again.

margie311 you're right. The story is finished, so whoever wants will read it.
However the grammar is really important for fics. I'm not talking about minor typos, but I've seen fics in ff.net who luck at grammar, punctuation, structure and are full with misspelled words all in once.

Obviously I wouldn't write a nasty review, because I don't want to offend the people, but I wouldn't read it either.

I didn't mean to blow your excuse out of the water but I did want to point out that it can be done if there are other authors on this board who would want to go back and fix things.

Besides, with your stories, it is not every other sentence that has a mistake - there are some stories that I spend more time trying to figure out what the author is saying then I actually spend reading.

Ugh. So true. Honestly If I can't get it in the first chapter, I flip to something else. I'm all for learning to write but if I can't understand more than half of what you're writing, I'm not going to try to puzzle it out.

As for the original question, I try to reply to all my reviews even if they are painfully late. I've got some to work through now, I just need to work backwards to get them done.

Sorry, I just couldn't not comment that sentence :lmao: .

I guess if we really have free time and have no puzzles to play with, we can use such stories as a game - try to decipher what the author wanted to say. It might turn out that the author didn't write in English exactly, but some other language that just looks familiar. They might also be genius - inventing their own language. It's not easy to do that. I just hope that they can give me the encryption key, so that I know can decrypt the story and understand what's about.

Now, enough with the joking. With a place like ff.net there are lot of stories and some are good, some are not that good, so it's up to us to choose what to read.

As for the reviews, did you have people who use the world please like in 10 times in one sentence? I don't know why that annoys me, but it does and it's a lot. Also, how can you respond to review that is like 'That was good!' I mean besides 'Thank you', I can't answer something else. There are also always eager reviewer who answer questions who clearly will be answer with the time, when the fic is finished eventually. After all there are authors who like the angst and mystery stories.

My point is that sometimes you just can't answer to a review, because there is nothing to say deliberately to that person. In that case I think a thank you and mention in the Author's note works fine.

Thing is, there is feedback and bashing.

The difference being that when feedback is properly given (positive or negative), it will actually tell you how to improve on things. I don't mind getting tips, ideas, whatsoever. That's feedback.

Thing is, its the bashing I have a problem with. "Your story sucks." or "I don't want to read about Boyd." or things like that. Useless, meaningless bashing.

Or even worse, people calling for writers to turn a story in to some sort of p.orn. That's what I hate most...
