@secretk - I just write "thanks for reviewing" or something along those lines because I feel that they took the time out to review |

okay - so I gotta have an opinion. Can I have an opinion please? Most readers idealize TV characters. For e.g: Sam being perfect and sweet and a completely cockblocked w.r.t other women, who aren't Andy - and most writers who aren't into that face a lot of criticism from readers who feel that their version of some character is the only version. But funny thing is - writers do the same thing if they have something stuck in their mind. For eg. if the writer is a big gail fan...and writing an alternative pairings he/she will try his/her level best to make the her (or any less popular counterpart) into something awesome. I've read some appalling Sam/Gail fiction where the writer can only seem to be convinced that it can work if they dis Andy or Sam (respectively) to kingdom come and/r make Gail into some sort of uber awesome bitch or angel. (Gail's neither. She's a well written character with flaws.). In the process of which the main character in this case Sam comes off completely OOC and perfectly ridiculous. I've seen this happen in Luke/Andy, Chris/Andy fics as well. And a writer who's willing to experiment with that, should be willing to tolerate flames. There's another breed of writers. I call them the know-it-all elite. Mostly believe they write better than anyone else and that they're pov is the only pov. That if someone were to point out a flawed pattern in anything they do - all they do is throw an infantile tantrum. Such writers only want positive reviews. When it comes to writing - especially for neurotic OCD people like me - I believe there are two things to stick to: the character - and a genre/style that you're comfortable with. This thing is never a rule. It changes with the character - or as you age as a writer. IMO as a writer one should be open to every type of response and ultimately stick to what u believe in. If you feel you need to modify your style - go ahead. If you feel the reader's just being ridiculous (Eg. I don't want to read about Boyd..like someone mentioned earlier) - delete the review of block the cowards who review anonymously as margie311 did. As far as language, grammar and typos are concerned guilty. I find it a pain to bother with betas because whenever I write everything comes out in a steady flow and I want it all out. But my reviewers are wonderful enough to point them out without making me feel like a total schlump. I've been lucky that way.So gave my opinion! |

I totally agree with you about the betas it's the reason I use then very rarely - as for reviews being nasty - it was only my last story and it wasn't constructive criticism as much as "did you bribe people to review". Obviously I erased, but decided for the rest of the story to disable anonymous and I'll re-enable it when I finish |

I think another thing to mention about this (yes, I can just go on and on about this), is that if they don't use a beta, some writers tend to read and reread chapters before posting, leading to a sort of "blindness" bc they know what the words are supposed to say, and are less likely to notice actual errors. I suffer majorly from this. I can probably read a chapter up to 6 times before I post, and the more I read it, the fewer errors I notice. Thank goodness I NOW have a very diligent/capable reader to point these out. Makes things much easier. But we don't work through the "beta" system. Edited by margie311, Feb 19 2012, 12:21 PM.

@margie311 I have this problem too. It's not only with writing, but whatever. When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time solving math problems. When I was stuck with some problem, I was getting nowhere, because I tried the same strategy over and over again, just because I've dealt it long time. So I usually needed some break and talk with my father. He was able to try to point me in other direction and it usually ended with successful solving of the problem. That's why I appreciate constructive feedback - because sometimes I just don't see my flaws. The same goes with the wording and grammar - that's why I use beta. And @bbww I agree with you too. Some fics have intentional bashing of character. And that's because we're writers, but also fans. So if someone doesn't like say Luke and Andy together, they come up with pretty solid reason for them to not to be together - like making Luke total asshole. Unfortunately I've seen this with movies and series too. In fact that's exactly what happened with Rookie Blue. They needed a reason to break up Andy and Luke and made Luke a cheater. I'm not saying that he was favorite before, but let's face it - after the cheat he's a lot more disliked. That's the reason I don't like love triangles - they always end up making one of them the bad guy. Can't people separate just because they don't work out? I also agree that we should stick to the genres we're good at it. It feels better for us and for the readers. We could experiment of course, but in that case we should take into consideration the constructive readers' opinions. And I also like flawed characters, feels much better than perfect ones. But it's just my preference. Edited by secretk, Feb 19 2012, 01:23 PM.

Your hardwork pays off margie! I mean I read your chapters with near obsessive slowness to prolong the pleasure of reading it and I haven't found any major typos...or any typos for that matter. That's A+ quality work there lady. I'm just lazy to reread it more than once. And I totally get blindspots - so I know exaclty what u mean. Also I declare that I'm so jealous of how awesomely you write, I look for errors in your fic to satisfy my crumpled ego - sadly only I don't find any serious ones. Also did I tell you how awesome the whole gun-range smut was. It was so awesome I was wishing that I could kill Andy and take her place in that scene. I broke my rule against loggin on to LJ - just to read your work. Right no - on to more serious discussions. Can I please steal Sam out of the Witness and make him by personal slave?

I'm weighing in on the post above, even though it's between bbww & margie311 and it's actually none of my business but (1) it made me laugh out loud (which I always appreciate) and (2) it's Sunday, yawn!, and (3) I'm a fan of both writers: I think Margie 311 should lend Sam to bbww because Spoiler: click to toggle |

Okay, so here's the thing, and please forgive me... If I had the power to lend out Sam, he'd probably be in constant rotation, so I'd have to fit bbww into a schedule :) How do Thursdays at 4pm sound? (Total coincidence that I happen to be at work at this time.) Edited by margie311, Feb 19 2012, 06:53 PM.

i can - but...i'm a proponent of the right to say anything you want. I don't ever agree with crap reviews like 'this is shit' or 'you should stop writing' etc- but I still figure everyone has the right to express whatever they feel. I just ignore the things that i don't like.I feel that we writers often take for granted that we do stretch realities and maybe bend canon to suit our likes and dislikes - and obviously like we express our desires through fiction -- similarly some folks express their opinions in their reviews. Writing smut without making it seem like an anatomical description of sex is tough - I'm still learning how to write it without is seeming crass and intrusive. There's a difference between a love scene and porn when you're watching it on TV/film right? It's the same thing. - and I've read a lot to know that it can actually gross you out when you're reading it. And yes, I admit I'm a pervert who keeps Sam naked most of the time - but if someone actually has that strong a reaction (and I agree like LAwoman says it's TMI sometimes) that's evoked by my writing - I know it sounds a bit pathetic on my part but actually it's flattering. Besides - it's hilarious to read it. Edited by bbww, Feb 24 2012, 03:37 AM.

I couldn't agree more that good sex scenes are actually very hard to write, which is why I mostly don't try. It's also why I totally appreciate the authors like you who can manage to do it. It's definitely putting yourself out there more to criticism and random reactions. Plus, Swarek is a hot character and McSwarek is a hot couple, so what's not to love about well-written smut involving them? |
