Oh that is just horrifying. It must violate some kind of fanfic rule. I will try to locate and report as well.

It's also in the presentation. I have my own grammar issues and don't mind when people point it out - but don't focus the entire review on the mistakes
Right? I'm not perfect on being gentle. I think I wrote one last year where I said the author had Andy way to OC and acting like both too high school and trailer trashy--which I felt bad about later. And I will make a comment on grammar when there's something that's done repeatedly that hits me like nails on a chalkboard (I recently took issue with an author who constantly uses I/he/she seen ...) but I try to say that it's a nitpick and is just distracting from otherwise good writing to take the sting out of it. But this moron's superiority complex is out of control and he clearly has no constructive intent. That's why I had to vent about it. I just felt so bad for the person on the receiving end of something so immature.

I'm an education major and a few of my professors were big on something called PCP and when I need to give criticism, I use this idea. Basically, it is praise, criticize, praise - and it works because you sandwich the criticism. If I feel something warrants more than that, I'll send a PM

Was very surprised to see which author was targeted! Not that anyone deserves this (someone's perverted idea of 'punk'd'?!), but as a veteran of the site (posting since Mar 2010 and author of 60 stories!) hopefully she's developed a 'thick skin' and can (if not laugh at least) brush this off! :baseballbat:

(BTW, just so there's no confusion, by 'veteran of the site' I mean the author who was targeted; reading the later posts, it's good to know it was a 'random' target, not that it excuses the guy who did it!!!)

Wow. just found it, and not at all anyone I would have guessed (not that anyone deserved that, but this person's writing isn't bad at all, IMO). How disgusting. I will report it as well in the morning. Some people really need a life

If It makes this person feel any better, that person is posting the exact same review on a bunch of stories, so I'm pretty sure they just picked a random story where they could anonymously review, as opposed to actually writing that JUST for that story. Basically, if that person was reading this I would hope they know it was just a troll, not someone who actually read it and decided they didn't like it.

Wow, the 'funny' part is the reviewer thinks that he/she is original and funny and this is not funny. This is tasteless. If he/she doesn't like what she reads then there is no need to read it. I'm pretty sure that we're free enough to choose what to read and what not.

I agree the author might no be native English speaker, just like I'm not. In that case I appreciate every time some native one points out my mistakes. But there is a way doing this and that's not the one.

I found the review; can't believe he targeted the author because her work is great! That person is a sorry excuse for a human being. :yuk: I reported him for spam abuse.

After figuring out who it is, pretty sure she is a native speaker - she is one of the younger writers. Writing is a process - it takes years for some people. Even when English is the first language.

I just hope she doesn't give up, if I were a young writer on ff.net and got that review, I don't know how I would have reacted

I googled the review and who ever it is, has posted it many times!

But I haven't found the RV story it was left with. Can I get a PM too?

I got an anonymous review on my story yesterday trying to tell me the importance of punctuation. No other comments - just a lecture on 'proper punctuation'. On one hand, I found it completely and totally laughable, since everyone jokes about how I am 'the grammar police', but it also really kind of pissed me off.

The ONLY time I ever falter on punctuation or anything of the sort, is when I use quotes. I know it is not right, but I have fallen into the bad habit of writing like this - "I know" she said. Now, TECHNICALLY there is supposed to be a comma after 'know'. It is true, I am not disputing that. I could try to argue writing style or format, but the truth is that I have been doing it wrong.

It bothers me though, because of all of the stories out there (some which don't bother to use punctuation at all, let alone proper grammar or sentence structure) they had to pick on mine?

Seriously, though? Must you find the one single fault and feel the need to point it out? And do it anonymously? If you have the balls to say something, at least own it, that's my opinion.

Whatever, if my lack of commas is that person's biggest problem in life, then I guess they must be blessed. :eyeroll:

Sorry, rant over... continue on :p

deedee....some people seriously just read fic for the purpose of finding errors... It's irritating, but, well.... they suck and there's nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.

except delete of course *LOL*

Some people just have nothing nice to say and instead of just not commenting at all, they pick at the negative.

Ff.net used to have it that even anonymous reviews had to supply an email address - I don't know of that is better or worse (because then you could actually reply to the reviewer)

Some people find this as exercise - reading stories and finding mistakes. It's like part of their routine. They can't function without doing this at least once a day.

I don't put the comma too, because I think that in the online form it's easier to read without it. It doesn't contribute that much. The "" are enough if you ask me. At least in environment like fanfiction.net.

I kind of agree with that. It's certainly the least of the grammar and punctuation problems I've noticed in RB fics. There are a couple authors who have been updating actively the past few days who are so bad I do wish someone would give them a little gentle push to clean things up a little. I can't do it. I don't want to be the one harping on that stuff constantly. But this person has to single out a liberty that actually does make things a little more readable? :dunno: I can totally see why you're annoyed, especially if the person didn't take the time to comment on any of the content and great points about your story.

Also, as I've pointed out before, not all of the authors on ff.net have English as a first language. Yes, it drives me crazy, and yes, I've stopped reviewing some of those authors because I have made comments and they just ignore them and I know that if I keep reviewing my reviews are going to get more negative but ff.net is not professional. It is more of a hobby so people should not nit-pick - and if they do, it should be done in a PM

Yeah, but some of the worst ones are from the UK. Granted, they could be immigrants whose first language isn't English, but I don't think so. So, yeah. I decided I just shouldn't read their fics anymore.

Oh don't get me wrong. I hate when there are grammar or punctual mistakes. I've seen fics that have no proper layout or anything. As someone who has problems with the eyes, I avoid those stories at every cost. It's just difficult to read like that. I also value shorter sentences, because otherwise I could get lost.

If I see such story however I don't review at all. I just choose to not read them. I don't want to be offensive, but I can't also read something like that. Besides my mind works that way - it sees all problems at first sight, but I try to not being negative.

I agree that not all people who write have English as first language. I don't have it either, but still I don't write like someone who has never read anything in English. I try to use some beta readers and spelling checkers. It might be not perfect, but it's still something. So while I agree that not all can be professional writers and have flawless English, still some of the writers are better than others - not only story wise, but also in regards the language, the grammar and the punctuation.

Having said that ff.net is a free place and everyone can post there, so we just have to filter and read only what we want.

I think the other issue is that some people just refuse to get beta readers. I know that on more than one occasion I have suggested it - most writers just need someone to correct their spelling mistakes and then the story will be so much better (the punctuation issues are not as noticeable if the words flow).

Finally, it is important to know the writer as well. One of the writers on the RB ff.net page - I'm 95% positive that in one of her first stories she actually made a point to say that she is dyslexic. That info is important as a reader because I will read her story (even though I think she should get a beta to fix the mistakes) but I will make sure that I leave myself more time to read it.
