So, this is incredibly self-indulgent, but I honestly cannot make up my mind about this. I'm getting ready to do a final edit on my latest chapter of The Witness. The problem is that it's absurdly long. 15,000 words. So, I guess my question to readers is if you'd prefer to read it all together, or split into two parts (with the flashback at the beginning of part a, posted across two different days - to prevent confusion with links/arrows, etc.) Edited by margie311, Jan 8 2012, 03:01 AM.

Before voting, just for fun (?!?) I googled how many pages 15,000 words amounted to & found a site (not recent) where a whole bunch of people argued about this, coming up with anywhere from 17 to 50 pages depending on typeface, spacing, etc.!!! (and I sometimes think I spend too much time reading fan fiction???) Then another site said that the average reader reads 250 words per minute, so it should take about one hour to read 15,000 pages. I will gladly devote an hour to read your whole chapter at once, and if it happens to take more than that, I will enjoy every single additional minute!!

with the formatting I use, its 21. And...it seems ridiculously long. I know a lot of people don't care, but it's kind of daunting *L* but THANK YOU *L* Edited by margie311, Jan 8 2012, 03:29 AM.

oh please may I have an opinion - as being an avidly desperate witness fan - margie. You've made me wait faaaaaaaaaaar too long. POST THE WHOLE DAMN THING! i'll read it. I am the only important person in the world. No one else's opinion counts.Okay - seriously - though - i think splitting it into two is practical only if there's certain elements of the plot that need to be conveyed to the reader. For example - if there's nail biting angst in the first part - you can split it there - if the whole chapter is required to convey all emotions, it doens't matter how long it is.Reading should be the readers headache - not yours. |

*L* I'm leaning towards posting the whole thing. Thinking of changing up the format kind of makes me.... not gonna lie.And um...my "editor" thinks she'll have it back to me by tomorrow night. So if it's not up by Monday, totally her fault :) |

I'm with everyone on posting it together. I've been dying for more from this story, so I'll definitely devour it in one sitting no matter how long it is. Just put a little comment in the AN saying it's longer than usual so anyone tempted to sneak a peek at work knows what they're getting themselves into. Other than that, more is always better with your writing. Which, can't believe I'm saying that because I'm generally a less is more type with most things. |

This is a tough one - I'm normally one of those people who can't sit still long enough to read something that long but since I'm still on break... I think you should post the whole thing - but, as LAwoman mentioned, give a warning in your A.N. (not that everyone actually reads them...you'd be surprised at some of the comments I've gotten when the answer was clearly in the A.N.) about the length so if someone only has a few minutes, they don't sit down and start to read only to get lost in the story and forget about everything else. |

Well it really depends on where you post the chapter and how it's structured. It also depends on how often you update your fic. If you update it every week, than I prefer fairly medium size for chapter (8 pages or 5000 words). Why? Because I have problems with my eyes and when the story is long, I had to scroll a lot and that annoys me. Also you don't want to barricade the readers with too much story and plot. They had to have the time to process things. What I like about fics is that you can take your time. No one will cancel you, no one will want to have action every other chapter. You can take your time and explore the characters the way you like it. Also if the fic has good summary, it'll be read only from people who really want to check it out. Now back to the question - a long chapter means more time to read it and a lot of information for process things. Since I read the fics on my PC, I prefer to be possibly easy to read and follow. Anyway to me the most important thing is not the chapter length, but it's structure. Something has to happen there, it has to be divided in some logical parts. And the ending should be like ending, not like interruption in the middle of the story. |

What you said:
What I heard:
How I twisted this around in my head: This is the last chapter?!?!?!?!?! And then I reread it and saw "latest" and not "last". Go me. I would much rather read a long chapter than having to possibly wait if you split it up. That whole instant gratification thing.
