Fanfic Challenge?

After seeing sillygirl's lovely (very, very lovely) post with the *ahem* story prompts, I feel like this board and all its talented writers should have a fanfic challenge.

I don't really know how to *run* one, but in the Smallville fandom we had them all the time.

Sometimes we had "gift" challenges, where you wrote a fanfic for someone else based on a prompt they'd chosen. Other times we got to pick from an image selection (they were images like socks or a camping tent) and had to write a story that incorporated that.

The stories all had to be in for certain deadline. I wonder if we could do something like that here...?

That's a great idea! I participated in the Rookie Blue Christmas Fic Exchange, it was super fun and it got my butt in gear and motivated me to publish my first fics. The best part was that everyone got something out of it because we were writing fics for each other. The image selection idea sounds interesting, and challenging, too.

Love this idea! I look forward to seeing where it goes, maybe I'll even particiapte :p

We also had one where there were as many images as there were people and the organizer put the images in one pot and the names in another and matched them. So you didn't necessarily know what you were getting until you were told.

This sounds perfect for off-season filler, and maybe a mini one to warm up during the upcoming week off?

Oh that's a good idea!! There's so many ways to spin it as an off-season filler and it could help keep the fanfic coming at a steady rate. :p

Ex) we could do an alternate season ending challenge :p because in all honestly I'm really nervous about what they're gonna do and having 9 months to wait may kill me... regardless of what happens, knowing there would be fics may cushion the blow a bit. :haha:

With Smallville we did it all throughout the season and in the off season. Actually I think there were more during the season than in the summer.

I'm just wondering if it is best to do it here - or if you should start a forum on ff.net - there are a bunch of authors who might participate who are not members here.

I have no idea how to start of a ff.net forum! Didn't even know they existed! LOL

Are there really people out there who haven't discovered this place??? :o

I don't think it's a matter of 'not discovered' as much as 'not having time'.

As for forums - if you want to start one on ff.net, PM me and I can walk you through the steps.

I know FF.net does not allow "off site" linking. If it was a photo challenge, would that be a problem in their forums?

True, I didn't think about that - but the good thing is that with the new cover images, the image can actually be attached to the story on ff.

I guess it depends if you want to do pictures or prompts - prompts you could do on ff forums (and I have to check but I think I saw it successfully done on a board once...I just can't remember which one right now).

I think ff.net allows offsite linking in the profiles now and maybe the forums.

I love the idea of anything that prompts more writing.

I sucked into a meme on live journal about providing one to three R rated sentences on a based on a prompt and it's been fun.
