I just registered myself as a test account and what I have the inbox and preferences at the top. What I also noticed is that when I registered I am now a Training Officer and not a Rookie..

Okay, so I just had to manually put the Test_account in the Rookies group in the Admin CP. And now I don't have the inbox and preferences tab. Which means it's definitely in the Rookies group. I also have a tab that says "Resend Validation Information" next to my username, but if I click it it says "This account does not need to be confirmed.
Error Code: 22004:6006569"

Hmmmmm.....

@Tess I get your frustration. If I were you I would be frustrated too.

So basically we have 2 bugs.

1. When user is newly registered, the user is not in the Rookies group, but in the Advanced member groups. (btw I was never Rookie, it automatically made me Advanced Member, but I had right to choose the group between Rookies and Advanced Members)
2. When the user is in the Rookie group, not all links are available (Inbox and Preferences).

Do you have access to the source code?

There are two reasons for this problem (well at least I could come up with two):
1. There is some setting in the board that sets this (you can't find one, so maybe there is no such setting)
2. There is bug in zetaboards

If it's case 2 then access to the source code is needed or support. If the source code is available, then the method for showing those links should be checked. I assume that there is some filtering there and that filtering is somehow related to the Rookies group.

I don't know also how the users groups are defined. Is there anything specific about this Rookie group that makes it different than the others (I'm not talking about post count, because I assume that this is set for all groups. They all have some post ranges that are set).

No the Rookies group has the same settings as the Training Officer group and the Elite group, so that's not it. I can't get to the source code, maybe Kiren can.

Yeah I assumed this too, because it doesn't seem like Rookies group has limitations in comparisons to Advanced Members group for example.

I guess in the support they offer, they will check the source code and see if it's bug in the code. What bugs me though is that this is bug only for the Rookies and if the Rookies is nothing more special than the others than why it's the only group that has problems?.

Maybe because it's the first level group. That could be tested, but it requires some efforts. We could create another group (say till 25 posts and create user from this group and check if this user has problems with the Inbox and whether the Rookies have problems). If that's the workaround, we could set the group for only one post.

That's a good idea secretk, I'll contact Kiren about this tonight if she's not online today and reads this.

Thank you so much for your input, also going to see if we get a reply to Cythy's post on the support forum.

No problem, the important thing is to find a solution. Let's just say that this is my disadvantage - whenever there is problem I get frustrated and I have to know that it's fixed somehow. Otherwise I get frustrated.

Yep, maybe they would answer Cythy's question.

On the bright side this is a reason for the rookies to post more, so that they could reach the Advanced Members group  .

Yeah, it's frustrating. I am the same way. LOL I spent my entire morning trying to find a solution..I am however happy that it's not a major glitch, for example that they're not able to post anything. But still it's annoying.

Yeah, major glitch might demotivate the users to post here.

I tried to check the javascript and css files in the forum (I have plugin for Firefox that does this), but the file names are very unclear to me.

What I found however is that the Preferences and Inbox tabs are part of the top menu (it contains both menus), so somehow this top menu is disabled and that explains why both can't be seen. There is nothing else interesting in those files though. At least I can't find something that might help us.

I guess we will have to wait for Kiren and answer to Cythy's post in the zetaboards forum.

I'm sure this happened to me when I registered. I was never Rookie, I started as Advanced Member, I'm sure of that because the tag was black since the beginning (not green). So maybe the bug is happening since, lets say ... march ?????

Just trying to help ... :uhh:

It could be that this bug was always there and we just never noticed. The reason that some of you were never green is because there has always been an issue so the system has always made people training officers automatically and we've had to change it to rookies manually.

Still, everyone should be able to access their inbox, it's just easier once you reach the level of training officer

Yeah I agree that being able to access the PM Inbox is definitely good feature. We'll just have to wait and see how the problem will be resolved.

Unfortunately sometimes it takes time.

As for the bug - maybe the rookies didn't find it before, because by the time they had to use PM and got oriented in the forum, they were already Training Officers? Or their status wasn't manually changed by the moderators.

Yeah, I think there was a long period during the first off season when Kiren wasn't around much and Cythy wasn't a Mod yet where the manual resets weren't done. Back then Kiren hadn't given Mods Admin capabilities, and I've actually still never learned how to do the manual reset.

But if your reasoning is right, and your workaround works, we could easily create a one-post category (Cadets?) and make it that old lime green color. People would hardly notice the difference between Cadets and Rookies so that the whole issue is very background and unnoticeable to most members.

Anyone who registered and hit over 100 posts before July was not affected simply because you were never changed to 'rookie' status since it has to be done manually. Therefore, the bug could have been in place since this board started and none of us would have realized.

Second, all rookies CAN still access their inbox and preference, it is just a little more annoying. When you log in, at the top left corner it should say "Welcome _____________" [sign out] - If you select your name, then you can edit your preferences and if you select "PM", it will bring you to a PM screen to PM yourself and then you just select "PM home" (if people don't understand, let me know and I will create screenshots of my screen)

As Tess already mentioned, it is not a glitch that is "obvious" - all of the settings for 'rookies' are the same as Training Officers.
