@Cythy - I love getting reviews like that too :) If for no other reason that it makes me rub my hands together and cackle maniacally

And this is what I like about this fandom. The drama is left for the show, not going around assuming that people are trying to be negative or hurtful with every little thing. It really makes life much nicer, if in the absence of evidence you assume positive intent with possible accidental poor implementation.

In defense of some of those writers I think they got reviews that said things like "if you kill this character I will stop reading" or "if you kill this character you are a heartless shrew." In that context, I'm sure it's much harder to read "oh no this character can't die" as a reaction to the fact that people who love a character are probably not going to say "wow, it might make for an interesting story, so I hope you kill this person I love," even if they will read that story and love it.

Honestly, drama in other fandoms has made me leery of what I say in reviews. You tend to get statements of my raw emotions. Imagine the last episode of Rookie Blue was a multi-chapter fic. I would have left reviews like "Oh no! I hope Jerry doesn't die" before it became clear he did. Or "OMG, I can't believe Jerry is dead. Still excellent writing," at the end. I found out that upset some writers. They felt like it was "telling them how the story had to go." "Or getting upset with them for telling their story/" Since there were people I didn't want to stop writing, stopped trying to do that. Although, I do wonder who thinks I'm going to root for a a beloved character to die, even if I think it makes good story in the end. I also suspect it was a reaction to total venom.
That's surprising that they took reviews like that in a negative way. I actually love reviews like that, they show that the reader has had a strong reaction and is engaged in the story.

Well, I just got the most charming review ever, for my post-ep oneshot. From a guest who put their name as 'UGH'.

"I have never seen a piece of crap so badly written! Ever hear of "show, don't tell"? Well that is TOTALLY lost on you!"

Why did you let that one out? I would have deleted it before other reviewers could see it.

But seriously, the sad thing about all of these sites is that some people have no filters and have obviously not been taught that 'if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it'.

Well, not to mention that it's NOT badly written. I mean, that's the thing. I thought it was very well-written in fact.

Today I received some of the most amazing reviews I've ever gotten, as someone reviewed a bunch of my stories on ff.net, but it's killing me because I can't reply to the person. The person gave a name, but didn't log in so it doesn't link me to them, and I tried searching ff.net for their name but it didn't help me.

I've never wanted to track someone down so much, but his/her comments really touched me and I wish I could thank the person!

I am guessing people who write reviews like that can't even pretend to create a story of his/her own so you just need to chalk it up to personal tastes and immaturity.

Thanks guys. It was so vague and seemed like a random comment that they probably posted on various stories. So it didn't actually bother me much, surprisingly. It's quite easy to just write it off as someone being stupid and mean just for the hell of it.

Cythy, I haven't had a chance to delete it yet. I had to go out just after I saw it. Gonna go delete it now.

I just posted a link to a blog in the "Suggestions for Writers" thread that I thought all you writers of Rookie Blue fanfiction would get a big kick out of. I thought I would mention it here, because I'm not sure how often people would look in that thread-- especially since you all aren't new authors any more!

As a writer myself, I find the process and comments on other people's process very interesting, so I thought you all might, too. Also, he talks about reviews on his work, and people who hound him for the release date on his next novel (which could be like how people hound you all for "updates"!) so I thought you all might get a good laugh and be encouraged that authors who write full time struggle just as much as the rest of us who do it for fun. :D

Maybe I am a bit touchy at the moment. Or no actually, I am pretty sure of that.

I am going through some stuff at home atm and I'm getting PM's on ff.net and through the website filled with impatient 'enticements' to get me writing again. But other than that, I love reviews.

I am a reader only (if I had half the talent you guys had I would try my hand at writing!). When I read I sometimes don't review. I have 3 reasons why I don’t review sometimes:
1) I don’t like the story
2) I don’t like leaving bad reviews
3) I forget sometimes.

With that said, if I am reviewing a long story, completed or in progress, I will almost always only leave a review on the last chapter that will cover the whole story or just that chapter with a few things here and there about the earlier things I have read. Sometimes though, I will review chapters here and there if I find something I really like during what I am reading. I would review every single chapter, but I feel weird doing that. :haha:

Lately I have been trying to leave reviews when I read things, but I do still forget. I hardly ever read directly off the site, unless it’s on my phone. I usually copy a story to Word and take it to work with me to read when I have nothing else to do. So that’s usually a major cause of my forgetfulness to review. Though when I do remember, I type them up and save them to post later. I actually have a few reviews sitting on my computer right now that I need to post, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. :uhh:

Review length all depends on how much I liked and if I really feel like being specific of not.

If I find something in a fic I don’t like, I won’t say anything about it in the review no matter how much I want to because instead of feeling like I am helping the author with their writing that I might actually upset them.

Kind of random, but on ff.net I kind of hate that you don't get a pop up asking if you want to submit a review anonymously or not before it posts. I forget that I am not signed in sometimes or that it has signed me out and end I end up leaving reviews anon, which I hate doing.

Lastly, you guys say that RB has some of the best reviewers, but it also has some of the best writers – not just writing wise but politeness wise as well. Other than Rookie Blue, Gilmore Girls was the other fandom I read a majority of fics from and I have got to say, I was very surprised to see that some of you that I have left reviews for would send me a PM saying 'thank you' for leaving a review or answer questions. Never had that happen in the GG fandom. So thank you! It’s very nice of you to take time to do that! :flower:

I'm bringing back this topic because I've received a number of reviews lately where the reviewer has not signed in, but has asked questions. Please please please, log in before you review, because a lot of us love to recognize reviewers and build a sort of rapport with the reviewers. It's so nice to see familiar names pop up, and it allows us to respond to you. If you remain anonymous, we have no way of getting back to you.

To the last one, if you're on here: I want to answer your questions!! Please log-in when you review, because I do reply to PM's (sometimes it takes a few days, but I get there!), and I want to reassure you that new chapters are coming :) Or, if you dont want to post your name, feel free to send me a PM :)

Since you brought it back up, in the last few days, ff.net has been weird (it logged me off while I wrote a review so the review ended up being from anonymous) - so, those of you who review, check your review history (because a lot of authors like to respond to reviews)
