Google aren't always 100% accurate though, so it's a good idea to mention it, so those that are from the area or familiar with it understands why/if the author/Google made a glip. :) |

I totally agree with that - I've asked my cousin who is from Toronto, I've used google maps and I've emailed people on this board from Toronto and I still make mistakes. There is a difference between "making something up" and doing some research but to be honest, most of the authors on ff.net are writing for pleasure, not to become an author and it doesn't change the gist of it - the gist is that Andy missed the exit and they got lost. |

Generally my bad. I'll go back and edit names of places when I get a chance. I was trying to guesstimate just by looking at maps (the trip thing wasn't working for me at the time for some reason). In all honesty I've had a real aversion to mentioning anything so specific before and am unlikely to do it again until I do have time for decent research. (I get that a good writer would do that but in all honesty I barely scrape together time to write let alone read ...) As it stands, it's lucky it's not full of Australianisms and what not! That said...I'll change it someday...soonish. In the meantime, those that choose to read will have to give me the leeway and suspend disbelief.

I agree. You can research your ass off and still, it's never going to be the same as living there. Beyond just the general geographic differences, little culture things and details about the area are things that may not even occur to someone when they're researching. As someone who works very hard to get details even close to right, I've gotten to the point where I say, if it bothers you that much, don't read it. Or pm the author with suggestions. Don't criticize them on a public forum you know they frequent. It's just rude. |

That wasn't aimed specifically at rookieD. I'm not even reading the story because it is a WIP. jdee87's comment about the a/n brought up something I've seen a lot lately, in many different stories, that bugs me as a writer. Maybe I've just been spoiled by my other fandoms. I've read many Harry Potter, CSI, West Wing fics where authors have taken the time to really research things because authenticity and accuracy really matter to them. Guess that's just left me with high expectations. |

That's fine. But don't assume that because the RB writers don't get details right it that they don't care about that stuff. Most of us care a great deal. But there is no substitution for living those details. And as Cythy said no one on that site is a professional writer. We do it because we enjoy it and because we know the readers enjoy it. And a great many of us have full time jobs and full time families and full time school. Sometimes it's just easier to fudge a minor detail vs wait for someone to give you a credible answer. |

With Harry Potter, details are easier because the entire universe is made up. With CSI and West Wing, writers who live in the US find it easier to write - a lot of US cities have certain street names that end up in almost every state (and in some cases, in more than one place in the state). Also, for some odd reason ( ) google maps is more accurate with places in the US than in any other place. As a writer, the only thing that bothers me is when people talk about driving from Toronto to Florida in less than a day and things that are so off base like that (it takes me almost 16 hours to drive to Florida and at least 10 to get to Toronto) or across country mistakes. And just to defend it...I looked it up on google maps - according to google maps, had she missed the turn and stayed on the 403, it is totally plausible. It just means that Andy wasn't paying attention to the time and it took her a while to realize that she missed the turn. |

I've been debating starting a "Ask a Canadian" kind of thread for fanfic for a while. Like a place where fanfic writers could ask a question about Toronto and/or Canada and could get a quick reply. Is this something writers would be interested in? Or is it not necessary/needed? |
