Curious as to how people feel about this! It hasn't happened to me - that I know of - but the thought of it makes me a little... I don't know! Contemplative, perhaps. Unsure of whether it would be a good thing or not. Some questions to prompt discussion: + How would you feel about the cast/crew reading your fanfiction? + Have you ever had an experience where you have known that a cast or crew member HAS read your fanfic? + Do you mind if someone Tweets/links a cast or crew member, to your fanfic? + Do you worry about cast or crew reading your tweets/posts etc about fanfiction, even if not the fanfic itself? If they happen to go to your Twitter account, for instance, or follow you. Even if it is not your fic? What if you are Tweeting/posting about a higher rated fic? + Do you feel differently for different fandoms? |

This is interesting. I've never had my fic read by any cast or crew. But I think it'll be pretty cool. Mainly because we're always wanting to know what goes on in their heads. Nice to have the roles reversed. Now everyone's going to be scratching their heads ETA I hope I make sense here :) |

The long ones with a good storyline are probably fun for them to read. But some 'M-rated' stories will be kinda awkard I think .. ^^ |

In other fandoms I've been involved in the cast and crew pretty much have not publicly acknowledged reading fic so this is a little new for me. I guess I'd feel a little odd knowing they read it. I just don't think it's that good, so the idea that professionals would read it makes me anxious. Although, I've put it out there on the internet for anyone to read so it's not like they shouldn't read it if they want. Perhaps I'd just rather not know? I guess it would also depend on how much they know/understand fandom culture. Fanfic isn't always what I think would make good tv. Some of it is just answering what if questions or exploring ideas, which I know would not make good network tv. I feel like knowing that is key to understanding fanfic. That said if for some reason someone felt compelled to share a link to a story of mine, I have no reason to object. It is out there on in the internet. I just can't want imagine why out of all the fanfic in the world someone would choose mine. Since I don't tweet, partly because I like to keep fandom and fic seperate from the rest of my life I can't really say anything about that. I can't think of any Rookie Blue fics that fall in this category, but in other fandoms I have followed stories that qualify as BadFic just because I want to see where they go next. I'd wouldn't want anyone to think I thought those stories were actually good. |

This is an excellent topic! Great idea! I was actually discussing this with my coworkers - not fanfic in particular, but the idea that cast/crew come on TWC and read our posts. I think that makes me more nervous, because this is sort of a free for all of flailing and I just say what I'm thinking. lol. But in terms of fanfic.. for most of my fics it would be fine, even an honour for the cast/crew to read them. Not that I'd go out of my way to share them - but that's just because I write them for me, because of this I've only started posting my fics online this year, so it's not so much about the cast/crew as it is about exploring different perspectives for my own benefit (and so I can survive no matter what becomes canon). If someone were to link to my fics I would hope they ask first but it wouldn't be the end of the world. My biggest fear is that the cast would read my RPF (that I was so kindly coerced into writing by a friend on LJ. lol) But in general, I think it's cool if the cast/crew takes an interest. But I think I try to convince myself they're too busy to read fanfic. (I know Matt is really receptive to fanfic about Oliver, he takes it as a compliment and I think that's awesome).I'm doing a fanwork CD as part of the RBfam project and I haven't gotten many submissions, maybe this will help explain why people don't want to share their fanfic with cast/crew.

I think it's always a good idea to remember that the people we are talking about could read what we say and that they are real people with feelings. I think it helps good the discussion more civil. I would suspect the chance of discovering RP fic on live journal is low. I would imagine they would go to ff.net or something first, unless someone specifically brought it to their attention. Even then I think they would be smart enough to not read. Ever one in the Rookie Blue fandom is pretty good at acknowledging that it is just fantasy and not real, and that in real life we are sure Ben Bass is faithful to his wife. |

Oh I absolutely agree. I don't mean that I say anything rude. It's more the embarassing fangirl flailing (like in Ben's photo thread for example. lol). In terms of being kind and civil, that's one of the things I love most about this fandom, everyone is so respectful of each other and the cast. I've been on fandoms in the past where even the most dedicated fans pick apart the show in a negative way. I love that we all respect what they're doing and appreciate how the show is made. And the fact that the vast majority is supportive even when things are happening we may not agree with is a testament to that. In that way I would love the cast/crew (especially the writers) to read what we say here and see the faith we have in them. The whole topic of RPF makes me cringe. I just really and truly feel like I'm going to hell. But it would absolutely be worse if the cast were against fic (of any kind). It's great that they understand it's just fantasy. |

Good topic and questions! I for one would love for cast and crew to read my fanfic. I love writing and am really proud of what I write, and actually I'd even love to know what they think of it....but I know that'll never happen. I'm not sure if the girl running the RookieBluetv twitter account counts as crew, but I do know she read one of my longer stories, the one I'm most proud of actually, and I may have gotten a little excited when she told me. What's funny is that while I'd love for cast and crew to read my fics, there are many friends that I don't even tell I write fanfic, let alone let them know how they could read it. lol |

I haven't written anything for ages, so this sort of feels like ancient history for me personally. But I'm sort of torn about it. The first story I wrote was pretty steamy, so I started out not even planning to admit to other fans that I was the author. (not that SMchick is that stealthy a pseudonym for LAwoman, but there was still plausible deniability ) But then I mentioned to Melanie that I had written my first fanfic and made a point to let Noelle be in charge because she's awesome and hadn't gotten to lead anything as of the end of s1. Then she got all excited and wanted to read it, and I was kind of stuck because I really didn't expect that. She doesn't follow me, so I had to tweet the link publicly, and then the cat was out of the bag. It was sort of jumping into the deep end to not just admit I write, but let a cast member read it...AND for my first effort to include sex. My sex scenes aren't all that lengthy or graphic, but it was still kind of kinky and the type of unlikely setting that only happens on Cinemax or other thinly plotted softcore porn channels. To this day, I sometimes wish I'd just said I never thought she'd be interested and am to embarrassed to pass the link along. But it's not that big a deal.

I don't have twitter but I guess my feeling is that if someone else wants to post a link for something that I wrote, I'd be okay with it - after all, I did post it. That being said, I feel like if someone were to post a link, it would probably make more sense for it to be one that was not McSwarek (like I have seen some people tweet to Eric and some of the other characters 'look what someone wrote about your character). The thing I don't support is if people continually tweet a link to their story to a cast/crew member - do it once and let them decide whether or not they want to read it. Honestly, most people that are close to me know that I write but only one person (an RB fan) has seen any of my work @snafu - you want people to submit fanfic as well? I sent you a banner since I thought you didn't want fanfic |

I totally need to respond to this after my conversation with Matt Gordon. First, I never ever intended on letting any of the cast know that I wrote fanfic. I felt it was my dirty little secret, if you will. But thankfully, Silly brought it up first that I'd written an Oliver fic. I casually blew it off to him, explaining that it was just an origin story for Oliver/Zoe, etc. etc. and he looked genuinely interested. He asked me if I would tweet the url to him because he wanted to read it. I pshawed it and he said "no, I think it's the greatest honour when a fan cares about the character you play so much that they write a story about that character." Now, do I expect him to find time in his busy schedule to actually *read* my story? No. But the fact that he seemed genuinely interested in it, made my freaking day. As an aside, if he ever actually emailed me to tell me he'd read it, I might die on the spot. + Do you mind if someone Tweets/links a cast or crew member, to your fanfic? I wouldn't mind, it would be very flattering to me that a reader loved my story so much they wanted someone to read it (even if the someone is a cast/crew member) + Do you worry about cast or crew reading your tweets/posts etc about fanfiction, even if not the fanfic itself? If they happen to go to your Twitter account, for instance, or follow you. Even if it is not your fic? What if you are Tweeting/posting about a higher rated fic? I wouldn't worry. I honestly don't think they have time to read them. And even if they did, would they actually reply? I doubt it. + Do you feel differently for different fandoms? My opinions are still the same for any fandom. But with RB I feel like there's a more personal connection with the actors. Like there's a higher chance they might read it or hear about it and actually comment about it. That kind of freaks me out a bit. But in a good way. |

Not to butt in since you asked snafu, but since she was just asking me today to publicize it, I can answer your question...yes, she's looking for fanfic too. |

Yes, my apologies if it was unclear... I'm looking for fanwork so anything fan created and inspired by RB (fanart, fanvids, and of course fanfic!) And the great thing about fic is that word docs don't take up as much space as most graphics and vids will so I'll hopefully be able to fit more on the CD. :) If anyone is interested in submitting their fanwork, do so ASAP because once the CD is full, that's that.

Why doesn't someone just tweet the cast members and ask them if they have ever read one? I mean I just want to know if any of them have read one. You don't have to give the names of stories so no one freaks out. I would but I don't have a twitter. |
