@photogfan - I agree about the curse words in particular.

I actually like to have Sam and Andy swear a little, just because some of the situations they find themselves in, I think *I* would be dropping an f-bomb. But in every day conversation, I just don't really see it with them. Also, it tends to detract from the plot IMO.
Yes, when the situation would benefit from it, but in their every day speech, no.

Also, has Sam ever really called Andy "sweetheart" as an endearing term in the show? Just wondering.
Mostly it was sarcasm in the show.

I did enjoy it as a term of endearment the first time I heard it (in fanfic). But I still prefer it as sarcasm *L*

Darn, does that mean I should go back for the story I'm working on and take out the "sweetheart"?

I'll say it again, Write what you want *L* Just because it's not my favorite detail doesn't mean it's the right thing for YOU. It doesn't mean it won't work for YOUR story.

This thread is a slippery slope *L*

I have been so fussy lately. The use of some pet names has been grinding my gears...seems so out of character. I don't want to specify because discouraging writers is the last thing I want to do.
But I did read some where Andy is like mean-jealous, not cute, funny jealous and it bugged me.
And Luke being a kidnapper...seems to happen too frequently now. Didn't mind it at first but now..meh.

Luke kidnapping? My mind would have never gone there. I think it'd be way more interesting if they'd create their own villain.

Wait, really? I had no idea there were some stories like that. I have to cop to writing a couple stories after s1 that were a little rough on Luke just because I was so pissed that Andy agreed to move in with him and I really didn't like Luke much back then. But it would never occur to me to write him as that extreme.

I had a random thought about pet names last night...in anticipation for Flashpoint season 5 starting on ION.

There are a bunch of ff.net authors who also watch Flashpoint (you can tell when they write SRU instead of ETF because SRU doesn't really exist) and many who I've talked to who say that one show led them to the other (between Rookie Blue and Flashpoint).

There are a lot of similarities between the two shows.

In the Flashpoint episode "Between Heartbeats" (where Tassie happened to be one of the writers), Sam goes into Jules' hospital room and calls her "sweetheart". In my opinion, some of the 'Sam calling Andy sweetheart' stems from that moment (I know that when I've written it, it stems from there).

And that was my random thought of the night....

Hmmm... I don't even think Boyd is really that bad. He's totally dense and stupid, but not malicious.

@LAwoman - keep sweetheart! Maybe it will sound right if you write it :)

I'm also writing a story where Andy cries a lot, and I'm one of the ones who doesn't like it when Andy is a mess. I kinda think that is where S4 is going to take us though, more of Andy opening up and really being emotional.

Or...maybe not :) :)

OH! I do not like it when Andy dies! I read one recently and it tore me to pieces!

Are we going to see any more out of you anytime soon?? B)
I finally wrote a couple chapters and just posted the first one. But warning in advance that I'm not sure how fast I'll be able to update after the first two chapters. But at least you'll have my version of the food fight, which isn't much of a food fight, but is a tiny bit kinky. :p http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8619224/1/Damaged

I love this thread...never want to post fanfiction again LOL...but I loved reading everyones posts of likes and dislikes...we are all so different but so similar at the same time.

I don't like the stories of Andy being pregnant (although I hope to see it on the show some day).

I don't like stories where Sam uses terms of endearment all the time. If Sam could say "you're lucky you're cute" in 3.5 (which to me seemed OOC) I could see him say "baby" or "sweetheart" in the privacy of their home (especially after his speech in 3.13). I really think as we see Sam start to be more open with Andy, as I'm expecting to see in Season 4, this will become even more plausible. With that said I could never see him use these terms at work like when they're leaving parade "Hey baby have a good shift"...ya not happening. I can however see him use these terms of endearment at work if Andy got seriously injured-think Naley on One Tree Hill when she got hit by the car by Daunte meets McSwarkek after she got shot (but for real) in 2.1. For those of you that never watched that amazing show...there was an episode where Haley (who was pregnant at the time) got hit (badly) by a car that was driven by someone who intended to run over and kill Nathan. Haley took a hard hit and was lying on the ground unconcious and Nathan witnessed it all because Haley pushed him out of the way to save him from being hit. Once Haley hit the ground and Nathan realized what the heck just happened he ran over to her and knelt beside her. He called her "baby" once, which he never said to her before, and was frantic with fear that she was dead. I can see if Andy was hurt badly on the job (or off the job) and lying on the ground uncouncious (especially if Sam witnessed it) he would be by her side freaking out and I could see a "baby" or "sweetheart" slip from his lips. I can also see this if he was by her bed side such as Sam and Jules in Flashpoint that first season.

I do enjoy first person as long as it's written well. I actually prefer it over 3rd person...I fell in love with first person writing while reading the Twilight series. It felt like I was Bella at times so I like it if my readers really feel like they are the character I'm writing about.

I also don't like stories that have Luke being a horrible person because after season 3 I really want him back as a full time character...especially since he is unlikely to ever be a love interest for Andy again. I wouldn't mind seeing a jealous Sam though only to have Andy reassure him immediately that he has nothing to worry about.

I loooove stories of bad Boyd...he is such a loose cannon I can see him acting on the show like he does in the fanfiction...especially if he was fired from Guns and Gangs...The way he was written on the show makes me believe he could have a psychotic break and seek revenge on Andy because he really does believe she ruined three UC investigations. I think I love stories of bad Boyd because it puts Andy in danger and that brings me to the last issue...

Yes I love Andy in danger...but that's no surprise. I however don't like to see her as a weak flower, porcelain doll, someone on death's door in the face of danger etc...I picture her more like a heroine within a dangerous situation..such as the person who keeps it all together for everyone during a hostage situation at a bank or wherever else....like Jules did in that restaurant when she was on the date with the EMT guy. I picture her being someone who would sacrifice herself to save others. She's in danger but not weak.

What kind of stories I don't like? The stories that are ooc/au I like it when they stick to the real traits of the characters.

And I like smut but when it heads towards Fifty Shades Of Grey kind of porn then I'm not reading it. Again way too OOC.

Just a quick question to anyone that has an opinion: what are your thoughts on length of chapters?

Do you like long chapters or prefer them short? (I'm not entirely sure what I even mean by long...maybe more than 3000 words?). Or doesn't it matter at all as long as it holds your interest (which is probably the category I fall in myself...except when it comes to reading a really short chapter that leaves me unfulfilled :)

Anyways, I was just wondering because most of the chapters I'm writing for a new fic at the moment are huge...and I probably won't cut them because of why that is the case... But I was wondering as a matter of interest if people get turned off reading a chapter that has too many words!

Personally, the longer the better. But I have nothing against short chapters because I realize, for a variety of reasons, some writers prefer posting shorter ones. :)

I don't really care about the length of a chapter! The longer the better! I don't really like chapters that are under 1000 words though, I don't know, I feel like nothing can really happen in 1000 words! But then again, if it's well written and don't leave me feeling like nothing happened, I don't really mind!

And I certainly don't mind if they're long!

Rookie- the only thing that bothers me on chapter lengths is sometimes the chapter lengths bother me if every chapter is like 1,000 words or less. It sounds like you have the opposite issue and I wouldn't be bothered by that at all, especially from you! I'd LOVE IT! that's my opinion!

I think people probably have different opinions depending on when they typically read and whether they sign up for alerts. People who read while commuting and/or on work breaks might actually like shorter chapters. But long stories with short chapters end up generating lots of email alerts, which might annoy some people. I've felt like I made some of mine borderline too short on my last story. But did it anyway for some chapters because it allowed me to update more frequently while still getting some feedback. This particular story I had a plan for but didn't write in advance before I started posting like I sometimes do.

I'm all for long chapters as long as the content holds my interest. Also really appreciate long chapters if it's long between the updates. :)

I uh....have no opinion on this ;)

But write it how you want. If the chapter fits together, there's no point in splitting it up, ESP if it's going to detract from the impact of the chapter on your readers. Sometimes the longer chapters are necessary to get your point across and tell the story. Otherwise it would be like telling a joke with no punch line.

I absolutely LOVE long chapters, but I am also studying the Victorian novel in grad school, which is like the longest form of writing imaginable-- (900+ pages per novel!) so I don't think I'm a good representation of the general fanfiction reading public. . . :)
