I have to agree with the majority on here. I've been working my way through all of the completed Sam/Andy ff's (page 16 as of today) and I have the same pet peeves as the rest of you. My top ones are definitely:

1. babe/baby/sweetheart - I don't necessarily MIND these, but not used constantly. I can see Andy referring to Sam as babe, but not the other way around. I don't think she would do it a lot, but sparingly or in passing I could see it. I go back and forth with sweetheart, just because most of the time Sam and Andy have a sarcastic banter in their relationship and since he said it to her sarcastically, it's something that doesn't bother me unless it's over done. Then it's just buzzkill.

2. Luke being a villain. I agree with everyone else on this that he did a stupid thing, but he was never malicious in his intent. He wanted her back! It irks me that there are so many stories with him wanting her dead, or trying to kill her.

3. Yet, Boyd I don't mind so much. I can see how his anger after the Brennan op would push him over the edge. I think some of them go a little too far, and those are the ones that annoy me, but I think the storyline, when done well is okay.

4. I hate one shots that are obviously cut off. Especially well written ones that could easily become a bigger story. By the time you get to the end of the page you completely want more and there is nothing. It makes me sad!

5. I love stories where Sam and Andy finally admit their feelings and get together, but it drives me crazy when the story is like 15 chapters and they get together in the last one. It's just as bad as watching season 2! LOL but no really, if you want to do a long story, and I really love the long ones, I like it when they get together earlier and then reading about them struggling to figure it out as a couple. It's more realistic

6. Pregnancy right away. For all the same reasons previously stated.

I wish there were more humor/romance stories. I LOVE, LOVE the karaoke stories and the story about the gang going to Vegas. The karaoke flashback in 2x13 is one of my all time favorite moments of Rookie Blue because it's the gang letting their hair down. Anytime they do it in a ff I'm completely hooked! Ditto for the group trips. They need to do that!!

As for the length, I think that it really depends more on the content. Personally, I write shorter chapters because I struggle to edit longer chapters and I'd rather give my readers more chapters with less mistakes. The content is a big one because if you can get your point across in a shorter space, sometimes it is better to go for it. I've seen chapters over 3,000 words that could have been said in about 750 and then I feel like the author is dragging it out and I'm not interested anymore (those are the stories that I typically stop reading).

@rookiefan - for your #1 - the sweetheart thing I'm pretty sure goes back to Flashpoint (at least for me it does and a few of my ff.net friends) since in Flashpoint Sam calls Jules "sweetheart" it kinda just extended into Rookie Blue

for your #4 - I'm totally guilty in that area. My reason is that sometimes I have this great inspiration but no good end. My view is that I'd like to share the story that I have, even though it cuts off. My response is normally "use your imagination" but there have been a few times where I've gotten an amazing review or PM that inspired me to continue.

This isn't a gripe about a type of story. It's about a phrase I've run into several times recently from a few different authors that drives me up the wall. So I felt the need to vent a little here.

It's a pet peeve of mine when authors have male characters who are wondering what a female character, usually Andy, is thinking and they use some variant of this thought:

"I wish I knew what was going on in that [pretty little] head of hers"

Ugh! Even without the "pretty little" part, that sounds so patronizing. I don't know why female authors pick that up? Is it from reading too many novels written by older men or something so that it seems like a normal way for male characters to think? :dunno: OK, I'm ready to get off my soapbox now.

I know this isn't a type of story gripe, nor is it something that hasn't already been discussed, but the amount of hate reviews coming in from guests lately has been a little ridiculous. Almost all of the fanfic updates I've read recently have a note from the author concerning those types of reviews.

If you don't like the story you are reading, stop reading it! I don't get why that is so hard for people!

@LAWoman - I've noticed it too, although I can't say it really bothers me. I think it's more of a way for the author to get the characters out of their heads and to start a conversation. I will say, there are times where I think it's overused, or done in the wrong sort of manner. Especially when it comes to Sam and Andy. He knows how her mind works better than she does on most days and I find in some stories it's an awkward thing for him to say. I do think it stems from the idea that the guys never seem to know what's going on with the girls and spend a lot of time in the show trying to find out what's up with them. Although, I do see where you are coming from with it coming off as patronizing.

One thing that's always bothered me, but for whatever reason it's bothered me moreso lately is the age difference between Sam and Andy. That's something that doesn't seem to bother them on the show. I don't really remember it being brought up. i get it that usually it's done in a joking manner, but I really don't think either of them cares at all about their age difference and it starts to bother me when it becomes a topic of potential conflict because it's not something I ever see being an issue.

I started a whole thread a while back where authors can post some of the most ridiculous reviews because I had noticed such an uptick in weird strident reviews.

As for the thing about a device to describe thought processes, I get the intent. It's just the phrasing that grates on me. "that head of hers" makes it sound like the female head is some bizarre thing that's not the domain of rational thought or something. I dunno. It just bugs me.

Totally agree that a lot of authors seem to think of the age gap as more of a thing than I do. I don't see it so much as any kind of generation gap, but more rooted in the power difference due to Sam's extra job experience.

That's how I see it, too. I relate Sam's age to his experience on the force, but I don't look at it as an obstacle in their relationship or even that it's something they consciously think about. I also agree that it does give him this power over her because he has more years on her, but again I don't think it's a big deal as far as their relationship goes.

I think in regards to the phrasing of "inside that head..." it would probably be easier to handle if it was the standard, "what's on your mind" or "what are you thinking about". I get what you mean and how it changes the connotation.

I also forgot about that thread! LOL it reminds me of the book Emails From An A**hole. If you haven't heard of it, basically one guy started responding to all of the ridiculous spam and different ads he's seen on the internet. I literally was in tears reading it. That thread you mentioned completely reminded me of the book.

I don't see the age gap as an issue...I actually find it hilarious that people kept pointing out Sam and Andy but very few people (if any) said anything about Jerry and Traci - I assume that Sam and Jerry were around the same age and we know that Traci is younger than Andy.

As for "I wish I knew what was going on in that [pretty little] head of hers" - that could also depend on the writer (but please, if I ever write that, yell at me) - some people get into the characters and write that because that is what they'd want someone to say about them.

The nasty reviews...yup! Been there, done that. What I will say is this - I'm happy that they're reviewing anonymously. It means that I have the choice to erase the review. More annoying than the nasty anonymous reviews are the nasty "author" reviews because although you can discuss it with them, you can't remove their review.

@ Cythy - I know, I always wondered that too. I have always been under the assumption that Jerry, Sam, Oliver, Frank, and Noelle are all roughly the same age give or take a few years. They all seem to have gone through the Academy together. I also get the feeling that Luke and Boyd are not that far behind them, yet no one ever seems to care about the Luke and Andy age difference either. I wonder if it's because the Traci/Jerry relationship developed quietly in the background and wasn't front and center like Sam and Andy. Regardless, if I was single, and a guy like Sam was single, the LAST thing on my mind would be how old he is!

And I never will get the ones that attack the author. Like my story, don't like my story, whatever, but the attacks that become personal really, really kill me. Everyone has their own reasons for writing the stories they write. It amazes me that people cannot see that. It's not like bookstores are filled with thousands of copies of the same kind of book. Everyone has their own cup of tea. Why people choose to nail authors to the cross is beyond me. If I don't like a story, I simply stop reading it and move on (although, I will say that there are very few times where this has happened)

I' d just like to mention that nasty comments are not only made by reviewers, but also by authors on that site.

I'm not a member of FF (no time) but a good friend of mine in real life is. A lot of authors don't like any comment that is not 100% favorable. My friend left a signed review saying what she did and didn't like about a story and explained a bit more on her reasoning in a PM. She received a bunch of very nasty comments in reply including being called an ignorant :censored: who deserves to be raped again. Repeating other comments would violate the rules of this board but some of the less nice ones gave very graphic and profanity laced details of how they'd like to do it and other things.

While she didn't complain (never does), that kind of reply is way over the line and infuriated me and others. I can see why someone would give a guest review if that is the kind of response they get.

I'm glad you finally posted that story. I seriously still can't even believe someone said that. I know trolls do all sorts of outrageous things in comments on some internet sites. But for someone who's published a story to be that out of line and vicious does shock and surprise me. I'm so sorry your friend had that experience.

Someone contacted FF so they're aware of it (violates their policy), but they're not known for rapid response. The part that ticks me off most is some of the comments referenced a couple of things that had only been mentioned in the PM, not the initial review, so the author shared things with others who sent similar replys.

That is horrible, just I mean I can't even think of a better word to describe it other than horrible. By asking for a review, you are asking for someone's opinion of your work. Not all reviews are going to be good. Some of the best authors on the planet have had some horrible reviews written about them and they don't seem to mind too much. I will never understand how people can be so quick to take something like that and escalate it to a very personal level for no reason. I teach English and we talk a lot about freedom of speech and about opinions of novels and the one thing I try to instill in them is that personal attacks against others are not okay.

I'm so sorry for your friend and I'm absolutely appalled by people's behavior!

Wow...that's terrible. I don't mind reviews that flame if the purpose is to explain why - but just to say "it's stupid that Andy is always the one who gets hurt" or (one of my favorites) "your story :censored: . Did you actually watch any of the episodes or is your writing based on what you've read from other authors" - to me is pointless and I delete.

As for conversing with other authors - I think sometimes we do it unintentionally (I know I have) but mentioning another person's pen name is just WRONG. I would block all of those users (if your friend wants to but doesn't know how to, PM me - I can walk you through it because I have blocked a few people).

The worst that I'd heard before this incident (which is pretty high up on the 'bad' scale) is someone who was repeatedly PMed and attacked for a comment on an author's story (not RB).

As for ff.net being notoriously slow...I put in a request for them to add Marlo and Chloe in November...it's now January and they're still not added to the list.

I dislike song fics. Especially when the lyrics are most of the chapter so I skip the lyrics or the whole fic.

Multiple authors have done this, but I'm getting tired and frustrated of love scenes where Sam is written like a Fifty Shades character. Sam is a giver, not a taker. He would tell Andy she's beautiful, not demand she say or do certain things, especially possessive things. And Sam is not possessive in the bad way, he's possessive in the cares about you/loyal way. But writing him like a character out of that book makes him look like a creep, in my opinion. I could see Boyd being that way in a love scene (though I don't want to read any love scene with Boyd in it), but Sam would never be.

He even hesitated over Andy's lips before he kissed her in 2x11. And he carried her bridal style. Plus, there was also the fact that he skimmed his lips and breath over her face, without even pressing his lips in a traditional kiss. In 1x07, he was gentle and tender too, despite the frantic pace. In 3x07, he playfully and sweetly held Andy's cheeks in his hand before he kissed her.

And don't forget the nose nudges...men who are domineering in bed don't do that.

So there is no evidence that Sam would be anything other than a gentlemen in bed. Referring back to 2x11, even as the pace is picking up, after he sets her on the bed, he even stops kissing her for a second to let her breathe (he wasn't forceful) and then there's how he delicately held her face before looking in her eyes and kissing her. And his hands were moving in a gentle way.

It bothers me when he's portrayed as the opposite.

You what type of story I really really dislike....the ones that have detailed M rated sex between Andy or Sam with another person. Especially when there is no warning. It's popped up twice recently and I have no interest in reading any if it. I just wish there were proper warnings in place so I avoid the fics altogether.

So, a lot of M rated scenes with third parties lately? Read the same problem in the other thread. TBH It happened to me for the first time just yesterday but I can only blame myself since there was a warning. My choice.

I can't say that I dislike (it's too much, I can use dislike only for triangles with Nick, that I silently skip, without intention to hurt the writers) but they make me wonder if we fell in love with the same characters, when in the same FF Andy keeps leaving over and over or she blushes every five seconds or Sam acts like a j!rk 24/7.
I love that they are flawed person and I love when the FFs show that (even with OOC behaviors, I don't mind), but they are not awful person. They have also their good moments.

Anyway in general I really appreciate the effort that people do to write and share, because they make the hiatus bearable, for this I'm grateful. For few FFs that I don't fall in love with, there are much more able to give me McSwarek feelings and that it's all I care. It's just that sometimes I would like a little bit more balance, Sam isn't awful, nor Andy.
Puzzled.

About the m rated I think that if we don't know the character its more esay and can be tolerate especially if in the end it will be McSwarek
