Ask a Canadian; For fanfic writers to get quick and easy answers!

Got a question about Toronto (or another Canadian city) that you want to ask a Canadian about for a fanfic you're writing?

This is the place to ask!

No question is unwelcome or stupid! Just ask!

Even the most mundane questions might have a Canadian spin. (For example, Canadians would use a "bathroom" or a "washroom" and would never say "restroom")

Got a legal question? There are people who could answer that too! (For example, our crimes are divided into indictable or summary offences, not felonies and misdemeanours)

We'll even tackle directional questions! (For example, Toronto International Airport is technically inside of Mississauga and not actually in the city Toronto! Although it does border it nicely)

Ask away!

Haha, that's funny about the "bathroom" thing bc the dozen or so people I know in Manitoba all say "rest room".

Well, if anything, we are regional.

Strangely though the signs in a Wal-Mart, let's say, are likely to say "restroom". But we definitely say bathroom or washroom.

Another random language thing is that we pronounce Toronto as "Tor-on-no". No "T" sound at the end.

Actually that I was one of the things that I loved about the movie "Scott Pilgrim". I think they must've purposefully done it-- but Michael Cera (Toronto native) would say it "Toron-no" while Kieran Culkin (American) would say it "Toron-TO". It was as though they were highlighting it every time. Made me laugh.

There was even a line in the movie "Argo" about it.

I'm afraid there are 'regional' differences in Toronto, too: most people I know say "Tran-ta" (two syllables)! Maybe it's the fast pace of urban life - too lazy to enunciate?

(Hey, just call it 'the centre of the universe' and be done with it! )

Personally, what makes me giggle are people who pronounce Etobicoke "Etobicokie", as if it's five syllables - that includes one of my co-workers who actually lives there!

This is great .. Thanks for starting the thread starry :flower:

I may be at risk of bombarding the thread though. I use a LOT of slang (generally speaking) which I'm assuming can often get people irritated and confused. For example, even though we use metric in Australia too, I'll often talk in miles and yards just because it's kind of endearing and a form of exaggeration to me (ooh, and I like to do that a lot too...some other Australians might agree that is a cultural thing ;)! My parents still refer to pounds and what not around me, so I guess that's part of it too.

Anyway, my first question then would be: whether the switch-up lingo here and there between metric and imperial would be completely irritating to you?

I'm probably not going to be able to help myself regardless, but I was just wondering....

Personally, I use both metric and imperial all the time, so I wouldn't even notice, but some people are more particular probably.

One thing I notice is when writers use "lounge room" - Canadians use living room (formal spaces) and family room, which is a less formal area usually directly adjoining the kitchen. Some people still have "rec rooms", recreation rooms that are usually in the basement in older homes (like the one I grew up in)

I appreciate when fanfic writers pay attention to details, but I think that non-Canadians writing about Canadian places should be given a break on absolute accuracy! :flower:

Yes. LOL Only in certain circumstances.

For example, we'd use kilometers for driving, but feet for distance. That being said, I think "officially" we're supposed to use meters. I'm not sure if a police officer would say 5'2 or the metric form. If its worth anything, my driver's licence has my height in metric. But if someone said 1.5 meters I wouldn't know how tall a person was by that description and I think most Canadians wouldn't either.

But in smaller distances, we'd use centimeters/milimeters. And in cooking it's cups and teaspoons. Complicated, yes? lol

An older person might use Fahrenheit (ie. Sam and/or Oliver) but a younger person would definitely be using Celsius (ie. all the rookies).

A 'Celery Stalk'

I think snafu said we Torontoians have our walk and a talk too.

Also look at a lot of things that have been pointed out in the "Canadians (or not) - places you recognize" thread. There's a lot of information posted in there & use Google Maps and GSV. http://s4.zetaboards.com/sandy_fans/topic/8910437/1/

I just looked at my driver's licence and my height is in centimeters.

WTF?!

Who would ever measure themselves in centimeters (apparently the province of Ontario, but seriously?!)

I'm not sure about the rest of Europe but in Norway we use centimeters on our height :)

If someone said they were 165 cm, I'd still have no clue how tall they were!

Just for fun, I'm going to start telling people I'm 65 inches.

I prefer my height in cm: at 160, I sound incredibly tall, right? (thank you, Province of Ontario!)

However, if they ever decide to add weight, I prefer (demand) kg over pounds!!!

This is a great topic! I think it is funny in a lot of fanfics where you can TOTALLY tell where the author is from by the way they write and use slang.

Do Canadians call their mother's Mom or Mum?

Mom - but according to my bf Google, some Canadians are split between Mom & Mum - see if others weigh in here?
