Guess this is off topic ("Don't ask a Canadian"?), but one thing that caught my eye in "8 Days of Boo" (which I'm re-reading for the dozenth - is that a word? - time btw) was "arvo". I had to google it to find out it's Australian slang for post 12 p.m. - never heard it before, and thought it was very cool! (One of my co-workers is originally from Aus, so I'll try it out on him the next time I see him! ) |

Ok cool. When I come across that in fanfics, that is when I know for sure they aren't from the US. |

yeah I just assumed arvo meant afternoon, even though I had no idea why, it just was clearly what it meant in the story! At first I was like arvo? what. Two things stick out reading the thread so far. I know most Americans don't say lounge room, we say family room or living room, etc. like y'all do. So hmm wonder where the writers who use "lounge room" are from! Also it is def interesting that y'all are responding that y'all say Mom not Mum. Because I see Mum used so often in fic and I'm always wondering why! |

Mum is very British in its origin. You'll see mostly people who are either from the UK or have British influences in their English education using it (ie. a person studying English in India). |

I thought "lounge" for living space was a British term? Someone will probably say if it's used in England, Scotland & Ireland (plus obviously in Australia) In Canada (& USA), when you hear "lounge" it's usually a restaurant/nightclub -- or a waiting room, like at an airport Another example of how Canada takes some words from Britain (our roots) and others from the USA (our neighbour) There are others totally our own, like "eh?", eh? ETA: btw, I'm using the term "British" loosely - know it's United Kingdom with England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland, & different from the Republic of Ireland - I'm sure there are members on this board from each one

@starrydreamer yeah I know. I was just wondering why it seems so prevalent in RB fanfic, more so than I would expect. Just an observation. @Hawley Oh ok thanks! I feel I'd probably learned lounge in that context was british but forgot. yeah like you said, lounge in America would def be a rare-used word for club/restaurant/bar Edited by Lissa13, Nov 5 2012, 06:26 PM.

Hmm interesting, completely forgot to check that when I was writing. Even though I'm British, and for some reason I seem to use it when I write, I don't think I ever say lounge. Normally I'd say living room or front room, so this has got me wondering why I actually write it, maybe I'm just lazy and prefer writing one word instead of two... Hey everyone, So - I'm house hunting for Sam & Andy (and boo/for 8 days of boo)...and aside the fact that figuring out what their respective salaries would afford, I can't seem to get my head around neighborhoods and what type of houses/apartments would be in those neighbourhoods. At the moment I'm looking through a couple of real estate web sites ...but if anyone has any hot tips on housing/neighborhoods they think would fit the bill I'd be super stoked and forever grateful. Getting a grasp on a house would be awesome as I have a couple of ideas for a potential sequel that would feature said house. Hope you're all having a lovely weekend |

Wow, what a fun question, and I can't wait to read more of your Sandy adventures in & after "8 Days of Boo"! I'd recommend this web site to anyone who's interested in Toronto's neighbourhoods (I use it alot in my job as well): http://www.torontoneighbourhoods.net/. As you probably already know, Toronto's a really big city & expensive to buy real estate in. People selling property are 'lucky' 'cause, unlike a lot of other places, real estate prices remain high. See the link to the tps site below: Andy would be making less than $100,00 (cops make additional money beyond their base salary doing things like providing traffic control for tv series like...I wonder what? ), and Sam considerably higher as a detective. Even with that combined income, it's not a lot of money in today's property market. http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/careers/uni_benefits.phpI'm sure you'll get lots of other input from other local fans, but my first thought was Leslieville, an up-and-coming area east of downtown (& not far from RB's 15 Division, the real 51 Division). Since we get hints in the show (and demonstrations in lots of fanfics) that Sam's a 'handy' guy, Leslieville is an obvious candidate for somewhat scruffy houses that could be restored with some TLC and cash. A couple of years ago, one of my colleagues bought a 'relatively' inexpensive house there and sold it for a huge profit after fixing it up themselves! |

To add on with regards to wages, Andy would be a 2nd class constable in season 4. They move up the ranks every year. Someone who takes on extra duty (ie. traffic detail) gets paid for a minimum of 4 hours regardless of whether they work only an hour. |
