Heya! I'm wondering about major department stores/malls that would fall within the jurisdiction of div15 (aka 51). Name/types of shops/if it's a multi-level... Heck, do you even call them department stores?

51 Division is bounded by Lake Ontario, Yonge Street, Bloor St E & the Don River. On the opposite (west) side of Yonge Street north of Queen is the Eaton Centre, the largest mall in downtown Toronto. It's anchored at either end by a Sears (American chain) and Bay (Canadian chain) department stores. Also, lots of independent shops up and down Yonge. edit: http://www.torontoeatoncentre.com/en/Pages/default.aspx BTW, 51 Division, like many Toronto neighbourhoods is a mixed bag: new upscale condos along the waterfront adjoining the Distillery District (upscale galleries and shopping) and the former industrial lands that are being redeveloped for the Pan Am games in 2015 (& afterward will be housing, etc). Directly north of that you have "East Downtown" (& Moss Park) & "Garden District" (named for Allan Gardens, a public park with greenhouses), then "Regent Park" (currently being revitalized) and (near Bloor St) "St Jamestown", all more-or-less neglected areas with public (social, assisted) housing. On the east end of the division, east of Parliament toward the Don River is "Cabbagetown", filled with expensive, renovated Victorian period houses - so like other cities you have rich (Cabbagetown) and poor (St Jamestown) virtually side-by-side. This is a looonngg way of saying, there isn't much commerce to offer inside the neighbourhood. Okay, stopping now...!!! Edited by Hawley, Nov 20 2012, 12:11 AM.

Very interesting. Would the Cabbagetown neighborhood have an almost suburban feel then? Or not really. ETA: What was Frank's neighborhood again? And would there be a working class neighborhood near it that could be the center of Irish mob power? If not, maybe I'll just stick to not mentioning childhood neighborhoods in the fic I'm writing. Eaton's Center is the nearest mall. In there there's The Bay and Sears. Both are two floors, if memory serves me. But they might be 3 floors. http://www.torontoeatoncentre.com/en/Pages/default.aspx A department store by our definition would be a store that sells a variety of merchandise ranging from kitchen appliances, furniture to makeup and clothing. ETA: Clearly I need to read posts more carefully. I see this was already covered by Hawley. I'll slink away now... lol Edited by StarryDreamer, Nov 20 2012, 12:19 AM.

Frank's neighbourhood was St. Jamestown: public housing interestingly, Cabbagetown feels like an old, inner city neighbourhood. What happened was much of the similar housing directly west of it was torn down in the 1960s for Regent Park (mix of low and high rise social housing) and St. Jamestown (highrises). So it's been 'isolated' and has a real neighbourhood feel...for those who can afford to live there. For example, the exterior of Andy's apartment was filmed there in season 1. Also Cabbagetown started out as 'poor' housing for Irish immigrants (so "Cabbagetown" was a slur) - a century later, it's one of the most sought-after places in Toronto! For the Irish mob, Cabbagetown would be too 'upscale' - except for the leaders, probably. I'd probably say East Downtown would be a good neighbourhood, because there's a lot of social service agencies and halfway houses located there for transients Toronto is a popular destination for young Irish: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/the-irish-unemployed-seek-greener-shores-in-toronto/article591238/ The Irish pub mentioned is in Leslieville, which is east of the Don River Until recently, I worked with a guy from Dublin who came here to marry a Canadian, and meets up with fellow ex-pats through the Irish Football league (not that I'm suggesting those guys are 'mafia,' btw!) OK cool. I pictured a working class neighborhood that would be the mob center of power. And unlike the Sopranos my OC's family would live in some really grand old banker's house that was sort of an oasis in the middle of a rundown fiefdom that like some NYC mob neighborhoods is actually very safe on the streets from things like rapes and purse snatchings because the kingpin is still kind of old school and works like an unofficial "mayor." Sounds like East Downtown would work. It's not implausible that Sam and Frank could have been boxing rivals in a sort of cross-neighborhood competition/youth development type program, right? East Downtown vs. St. Jamestown. Cabbagetown I wondered about as a possible place where Sam was born. I wanted a fairly upper class, but with character rather than pretension. Nothing with new American-style McMansions. I'd previously written about it as a nice suburb. But I was considering finessing that and going with Cabbagetown as the place they lived before Sam's dad went to prison. |

Cabbagetown would probably work for Sam's childhood neighbourhood: if we take it that Sam's age is supposed to be mid to late 30s that would mean he would have grown up in the late 1970s/early 1980s, which is the period when run-down properties were being bought up and gentrified. So you can play it either way in terms of whether his house was more upscale or down. There are some pics in this link: http://www.torontoneighbourhoods.net/neighbourhoods/downtown/cabbagetown There are still several of the grand mansions on Jarvis and Sherbourne Streets in East Downtown: some are literally 'flop houses', while others are apartments/commercial buildings. I can see that as a basis for a mob guy: http://www.torontoneighbourhoods.net/neighbourhoods/downtown/downtown-east (more pics/details) Hope this helps! P.S. the pics in the East Downtown (or Downtown East) show Dundas Square, with the Rookie Blue ad that Cythy used to use for her avatar -- see RookieBlue, everywhere, all the time!

OK, since you came through so well, I've got another one for you. Moving away from organized crime to legitimate money, who would be considered the highest profile socially prominent, glamorous, riches family in Canada? Or top 5 anyway. Preferable old money, and even better if they don't live in Toronto. |

If you're talking Italian mob, they'd hang out on St. Clair in Little Italy. There are tons of cafes there where they'd sit playing cards and drinking espresso. Chinese mob, Spadina in Chinatown. As for a rich family-- the Stronachs are very, very wealthy. They live outside of Toronto in Aurora/Newmarket. They own half that town. They are known for the Magna corporation which builds and sells car parts if I'm not mistaken. There are probably a few wealthy families in Kleinburg or Woodbridge. But none whose name sticks out. (Woodbridge is the location of the "suburban" Italian and is rife with mob connections too). When I was doing my practice teaching we had a kid who had belonged to a mob family (that we thought) in our grade 8 class who's dad had a "trucking company". The kid had the "right name" and his family had the "right attitude" if you know what I mean. Over the weekend I was just reading about how a mobster from Montreal had been suspected of relocating to Toronto... But the Toronto Star's website isn't letting me use the search bar to find it. Oooh, I found this-- http://www.canadianbusiness.com/awards/rich100_2011 Edited by StarryDreamer, Nov 20 2012, 09:38 AM.

Thanks so much Starry. The Italian mob info might actually be something I could use too. When I did some googling yesterday, the Thomson family seemed kinda perfect, even if they live in Toronto. The head of a family of media barons is a real baron (actual English title). That seems too perfect, plus the head of the family after a couple of marriages was involved with and fathered a child with actress Kelly Rowan (The OC) who looks a lot like one of my original characters. So if I use a real prominent Canadian family, I think it will be them. |

Hello there. I'm new here. Amazing site! Can any of you Torontonians tell me approx. how long it would take to get from 15 Division station to Pickering assuming average traffic. Google says 40 min. Does that seem right? It seems very high to me. I'm using the real Division 51 and thinking of ending up in the middle of the northern area of Pickering where it's not heavily populated and a farmhouse might be. I appreciate any feedback that you can give me. Thank you |

Welcome to the board (and love your name, btw)! I think 35-40 minutes is reasonable travel time between 51 Division's HQ and northern Pickering. If you were driving in the middle of the night it might be faster, but rush hours might add extra time! The ideal route is to get on the Don Valley Parkway northbound, then north up Highway 404, then east on Highway 407 (which is a toll road) to its terminus at Brock Road in Pickering. Then local roads to your destination. If you're not into paying tolls, the alternate route is north on the DVP and east on Highway 401 (with express lanes) to Pickering, then north from there. That's more of a slog... |
