Think most people open presents and have dinner on the 25th (My family opens presents Xmas eve, but we're probably in the minority!) |

Honestly it all depends on the culture. Italian-Canadians (like my family) will stuff their faces with fish on Christmas Eve and then do a Christmas lunch with turkey. My Irish-Canadian friend does the fish stuff on Christmas Eve too, but they make a special trip to a local fish & chip place. I say this, because McNally sounds like an Irish-Canadian name. My friend will have roast beef or turkey for Christmas and they have a dinner. The dinner/lunch thing is more of a family choice. My parents like to have the afternoon to sleep away. While my brother's fiancee's family does dinner because that's when all the kids can come over. It's more of a personal choice, rather than a steadfast Canadian thing. We open gifts after the food has been eaten. Stockings are opened right in the morning (for me, it would be after church). The way Christmas is celebrated is largely cultural. But I will say that (IMO) a lot of the culture around Christmas is related to Catholic traditions (ie. fish on Christmas Eve) whether you are Catholic or not. |

Again, it's cultural. For me (Italian-Canadian) it's various fish. My parents hit up the Portuguese fish market and grab stuff we like (not necessarily Italian in nature)-- like calamari, crab legs, lobster tails and shrimp. My mom will make shrimp pasta and we eat our faces off. A more authentic Italian person might do baccalat (sp?) or something else. My Irish-Canadian friend literally will go to a fish and chip joint and get fish from there. It's just breaded halibut in a stryo container with french fries. The big/popular one in the suburbs is "Heritage Fish & Chips" People will go out of their way for it. http://www.heritagefishnchips.com/locations.php Edited by StarryDreamer, Dec 12 2012, 10:47 PM.

Mmmmmm..... poutine. It's french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy (so that the cheese gets all melty and delicious)! |

I saw an interview with Missy and the interviewer was teasing her about being a Surrey girl, which is where she grew up in Canada. They were making it sound like it's a bad thing. What is significant about Surrey? |

Honestly I've never heard anything in particular about Surrey, but wikipedia says that its known as being the car theft capital of North America... But truly I don't know of any inside jokes relating to Surrey, so maybe it's a B.C.-only kind of joke. Like you're only in on it if you're from there. |

No one really asked this, but I thought this would be interesting for writer to know since I learned it myself today from a not-Toronto, but near-to-Toronto cop today. He told some interesting stuff about what a detective would wear and I thought that writers might be interested in this in light of Sam in S4. The question was with regards to what a patrol officer wears and he explained all the gear on his belt: gun (typically smaller for detectives), extra magazines (only one extra for a detective), handcuffs, a baton that grows bigger in size and pepper spray. This is mandatory for all officers at all times, including detectives. For detectives the sizes tend to be smaller because they wear them under their suits. But they are all required to wear them. I thought that was super interesting and it seems weird because really why would they need so much gear. But it's standard issue, apparently and aren't allowed to leave the station unless they are geared up. |

I have a friend who's a cop and one time we talked about those gear belts. I'm pretty sure the weight of them would drop my pants in a second lol. Combined with the weight of the vests, I imagine you either buckle under it, or develop an insanely strong core. |

He mentioned that the guys in tactical wear 50Lbs vests and in their "audition" process they have to go around a track speed walking with it on, then they'll flip the track on them and have them do it in a squat position, and then the next time running, and on and on. If you can't last it, they you're cut. I don't think the belt is particularly heavy to be honest. The gun looks to be the heaviest item. The rest is pretty light weight looking IMO. The standard can is pretty small. |

Actually I think they look heavier than they really are. In person they seem light weight. I did forget about that. Get this, though-- the radios never worked in schools. All schools were a dead zone to cops. They've recently figured out a radio system that will work in schools and its being implemented, but they literally *just* figured it out. |

There are many Hispanic actors in Canada, especially in the Toronto area as Toronto is very multicultural and there are many people of many ethnicities. One of our recent Canadian Idol winners was Peruvian. I think what you are asking is why didn't they have a Hispanic actor playing Chris Diaz? The reality is that in Canada many children are born of immigrant parents or are mixed ethnicities. For example, my dad was born in Italy and my mom is (white) Hungarian/Swedish-Canadian. I identify and look white/Eastern European. So even though I have an Italian lastname, I do not look Italian. Neither does my sister or brother. Making this more complex is that there are some people who have racial ancestry to countries like India or the Philippines and have hispanic/Portuguese sounding last names (like Rodrigues or Dias, etc.) Canada and Toronto is very mixed in its races. You are more likely to find people who are Chris' age that have one parent that is Spanish and the other who is, say British. So someone like Chris could look less Spanish and more British. Rachael Ancheril is playing a Hispanic character (Marlo Cruz) but I don't think she is actually of Hispanic ancestry. Someone said that Ancheril is a South-Asian lastname. But she looks very Hispanic. I think she is the exact example of what I said about myself-- the child of two parents who are of mixed races/ethnicities. This is very common in Toronto and in Canada. I hope I answered your question? |
