After admiring @Manatea's beautiful homage to TO in the post above, I was struck by how much the skyline has/is changing since those images were shot!

Anyone who's interested in TO views should check out Rob MacFarlane's awesome work! Rob's the high-rise crane operator on the L-Tower, a 58-storey condo under construction downtown right now. He's been posting photos from his 'perch' on twitter since last winter under @skyjacked793. Here's an article that includes a slideshow with a small sampling of his work:

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/03/05/robert-macfarlane-toronto-crane-photos_n_2810970.html

Many RB locations: see image 9 in the slide show, with Queen's Quay (with Guvernment Nightclub from 2.1, Sugar Beach & Corus Quay from 3.2, etc) and, in background, Portlands where many many eps shot!

btw, if you want to be truly dazzled (or dizzy), check out Tom Ryaboi's stuff (aka @R00ftopper) - he's one of the local guys who sneaks onto building roofs & cranes to get gravity-defying shots - another article attached:

Cool! I sent Tassie an article about this trend last winter. The LA Times story had more to do with what the guys in Moscow are doing and that for them a lot of it comes from young people feeling they have no control and little hope in their lives. I could just totally see that as a RB story. Either getting a spate of false suicide calls or just it being nuisance from property owners calling the cops and then one of the kids gets into a whole personal story about why he or she does it.

Back on topic, the photos from both links you posted are stunning!!

Thanks you for more info. I actually find Toronto really cool city.

I love Montreal (so if anyone is from there, would love to hear more about it).
And I hope all is good for people in Alberta, I don't know if anyone here is from Calgary, but I really wish them the best.

Here I found one time lapse of Toronto (from Ryan Emond and Tom Ryaboi comes from Javin Lau)

In tonight's episode 4x06, Frank had a line of dialogue that was kinda incorrect in terms of Canadian policing, so I wanted to correct it in case anyone was going to reference it in any fanfics.

Frank's line was with regards to people being able to sell criminal evidence and there being a market for it. He said something to the effect of "God bless the constitution".

While fundamentally correct, it's actually kind of wrong.

In Canada, our rights and freedoms (like freedom of speech, rights to arrest/detention, etc.) are protected in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/Const/page-15.html

Think of it along the lines of the Bill of Rights, except that it was written in 1982 and there's more of them. When Canada patriated the Constitution (basically took "ownership" over the Constitution from Great Britain) Prime Minister Trudeau included the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Canadian constitution (on its own) is just a document dealing with the distribution of executive and legislative powers among the federal and provincial levels. (Boring stuff, I know). The only rights (for people) that are referred to in the Constitution "proper" are for Aboriginals. Rights & Freedoms for all Canadians are in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Charter only applies to federal/Crown institutions-- policing is one of them, the judicial system, immigration, etc. For 95% of the population the Charter wouldn't really apply to you. For that, each province has a set of human rights codes. Ontario's is called "Ontario Human Rights Code" (original right? lol) This protects people in all manner of life (employment or services being the biggest).

So if you want to claim that your right to free speech is being infringed? Charter.
If you want to say that you're being discriminated because of your religion in your workplace? Human Rights Code.

Now back to RB. Frank's line about the constitution was more of a "neutral" line. Something that all countries would get. But a real Canadian cop would most definitely say "Charter." Police have to abide by the rights provided by the Charter every day, all the time.

Cool! Thanks so much for the primer. Something about that seemed like it was aimed at a foreign audience, but I didn't know exactly how it was wrong for Canada.

ETA: BTW, that murderbilia part of the case was very topical. There was just an OpEd in the LATimes lst week by an author who found out a copy of her book about a notorious murderer was being auctioned with the criminal's signature. It somehow got smuggled out of the prison, and then was legal to sell.

It was such a clunky line and I wanted to punch my TV over its vagueness.

Another Canadian error in 4x07. Sam says that there's no statute of limitations on child abuse.

The reality is that there is no statute of limitations on ANY criminal offences (There is on civil litigation). You could've committed a crime 50 years ago and they could still charge you for it today.

Oh and for the ONE MILLIONTH TIME, RB: You do NOT "press charges" in Canada. A citizen files a report and police press charges. The Crown Attorney (the US version is District Attorney) would decide whether to allow for the charges to be further prosecuted or dropped.

Is "hairball" a word that grown men call each other in Canada as an insult? I would like to know how vigorously I can mock Luke for calling Sam that before I alienate a nation of people.

As in that he's hairy?

Sure, use away!

Not sure that I've heard men say it to each other, but why not. Some others that I've heard:
- grizzly Adams
- grizzly bear
- furball
- mountain man

I'm assuming you're referring to the fact that Sam didn't shave?

A hairball is a thing that a cat coughs up. Luke called him that in Mercury Retrograde. Trying to figure out if its a Canadian thing I don't understand or bad dialogue from the writers.

I would very much like torture Luke in fanfic for using stupid insults while still being respectful of Canadians.

My take on that insult at that point in time when Sam had just gotten back from playing a scummy street junkie was that Luke was making a snobby WASPy kind of dig at Sam. Probably taking a cheap shot at Sam's less than privileged background. It was definitely a douchey comment from a guy who was looking to chat up Andy, pretend to be a big man around Division who had more power over Sam than just the Detective's rank gives by implying he could interfere with Sam's authority as her TO, all as a way to impress her. Ugh!

It's not insulting at all (to the population of Canada lol).

And I totally use hairball in the context you're referring.

I have a question. When Andy called the mannequin "a Judy" in 407, was that a Canadian thing? Or is that cop slang? Or is it a modeling/fashion thing that Missy ad libbed? I wasn't quite sure.

I have never, ever heard of it being called a Judy. Even urban dictionary doesn't have a mannequin listed as an option under the listing for "Judy". But when I googled it, it did come up as a common name for dress forms in the 50s, 60s. I've only heard it being called a dress form, but I don't doubt that some people somewhere call it a Judy. lol

What I would've given to have them do a "Today's Special" shout out to Jeff the mannequin.

Chris once said Andy "cleaned his stove" when playing basketball. Is that Canadian for "cleaned his clock" or defeat decisively?

I would say "Cleaned his clock".

Sometimes I wonder where these writers hail from that they'd say something like that. LOL I've never heard "cleaned his stove" in relationship to a victory.

OT: I drove past Fort Erie today on my way to Buffalo and a thought occurred to me. Why the FRAK were Andy and Nick doing a drug operation for a completely DIFFERENT police district? Fort Erie is apart of Niagara Police Services and has zero connection to TPS. If it was a "joint task force" it would be with the OPP or the RCMP. Not with TPS. So, so weird.

I guess they just wanted Andy and Nick far, far away. And I swear one of the writing staff must have family in that area. First St. Catharines and now Fort Erie?

It could be worse. You just have to explain that Canadians don't say this stuff.

I have had to explain that Dexter is not an accurate representation of American culture.

Because TPS info is posted here, & with the addition of the character "Holly" (hey, different spelling), here's a fun video from the forensic unit:
