This question was asked of me on twitter and the answer is a bit long, so I told them I would answer it here. It's with regards to ep. 3x03 of Flashpoint.
To be fair, I don't know that I've seen the episode of Flashpoint that is being referenced but I do have an answer to the question. The answer is really 2-fold. I had a conversation once with a civil war renactor who is Canadian and his role in the battles is for the South. He goes to Gettysburg, etc. and will participate in those renactments as part of the South battalions. I was helping him bring his stuff to his truck and noticed that he had a flag on the back window-- I can't remember the details to it, but when I asked him about it, he said that it was the lesser known Southern flag during the Civil War. Basically he likes supporting his "side" in the renactments and the sticker was to show his loyalty to his side. He said that he wanted to put up the Confederate flag but says that sometimes people, when he travels, interpret it as a racist moniker and have their cars vandalized. He said explicitly that he didn't see it as a racist symbol, but more as a support of "the South" (he categorically said that he does not believe in slavery or the South's "side" in the Civil War, but that he is for Southern pride, which is what the Confederate flag represents to him). So, yes, some people do and don't see it as racist. Then earlier this year there was an article in the Toronto Star about some local high school students who'd taken to wearing the confederate flag. The school board had to make a decision about whether it was, in fact, racist. The students argued that it was more representative of "the country" (aka farm life) or like red-neck Duke's of Hazards kind of styling rather than racism. Schools do offer American history as an elective in grade 11, but generally the understanding of what the confederate flag means is vague to most kids. Some see it as a "hick" thing and others perceive it as racism. Depends who you talk to, really. Here's the article on that case if you were interested. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/02/23/york_region_high_school_in_flap_over_confederate_flag.html |

Interesting. So to those kids it was like Ashton Kutcher wearing trucker hats ironically back in the day, I guess. |

There was an article in TV Guide where they interviewed Travis and he mentioned that Fort McMurray (where he's from) is one of the "toughest" cities in Canada and he mentions that there's a lot of bar fights. I'd never ever heard of Ft. McMurray as being "tough" or having a criminal element, although Travis did say that there's some outlaying poverty and violence in some of the remote communities nearby. What Ft. Mac is known for is for having a highly disproportionate male to female ratio. Basically if you're a woman, there's like 3 or 4 guys for every woman in town in part because it's a huge mining town that gets a lot of out-of-province workers. Here's a clip from a show here in Canada called Rick Mercer report. Basically he goes across Canada and gets to do cool things. This clip is his adventures in Fort Mac (no Travis in the background, sadly lol. Believe me, I've looked. ;) ) Anyway, I started to wonder which cities in Canada are truly the most violent or scariest. I knew Saskatoon was up there (in fact I thought it was #1, when it's actually #3) but was curious overall if Fort Mac even showed up on the list and came across this cool interactive chart. Canada's Most Dangerous Cities If you click on the city's name you can see how much crime per capita there is. Hilariously (?) Toronto is at #52. And scarily, British Columbia takes up a lot of the top 10. But, just as I thought, Fort Mac is no where to be found. lol |

Well, maybe there are just a lot of brawls that never get reported. Generally, a big male/female skew is a pretty good predictor of violence, if not crime stats.

Different city all together. It was located in Mississauga. But in the interest of full disclosure, the Rookie Blue studio is gone now. The location got rented out to another company and all three productions (Saving Hope, Big Brother and RB) are moving. If you were to go there now, you'd find nothing. The set is sitting in a truck somewhere. New location, unknown. Edited by StarryDreamer, Aug 22 2013, 01:24 AM.

Whoa, really? When did that happen. I thought Illana's production company invested in that space directly rather than renting. Did I get that totally wrong, or did she flip it? |

It was up for lease like probably since they moved in. I actually have never *not* seen the lease sign. I have no idea about the logistics on who invested in the building or whatever. But it's gone to someone else now. TBH it's a bit of old news, but the exterior was still in tact (ie. 15 on the garage, etc.) even though the interior may/may not have been. Now there is literally nothing on the outside. I would hate it if someone planned a trip to see the outside when there's literally nothing to see there now. |

The good news is there is no shortage of studio space in Toronto: http://www.omdc.on.ca/film_and_tv/Ontario_Film_Commission/Ontario_Production_Guide.htm In the words of Gail, it's all "luck and timing" in juggling productions!

I guess creative types are used to being vagabonds, so moving around so much isn't that big a deal. But thanks for getting the word out early. Probably there won't be many going anytime soon now that production has been pushed until January. But you never know. |

Thank you Starry..I was needing the info for purposes of the a fanfiction story I'm writing. I thought I remember hearing the studio was really close to 51st division which is what 15 division is supposed to be. So I guess this means we should be expecting a different exterior of the division next year on the show?

That is where the old original studio where they filmed s1 was located. I think they might use old stock footage for the exterior shots. Edited by LAwoman, Aug 22 2013, 02:56 AM.

What about when they film the parking lot scenes outside the Sally Port...I wonder if those will now look different. |

Yes, probably. Those changed after s1 too. I meant the shots of the front of the distinctive building. |

For S1 & S2 - they were downtown, within the boundaries of 51 Division. The outside of the old studio stood in for Sudbury Police in the episode 1.09 Big Nickel. That whole area is now levelled and condos/PanAm Games' Athletes village buildings are going up. The area is now called the Canary district named for the old diner that was there (as seen in the 'Three to Tango' movie with Matthew Perry, Dylan McDermott & Neve Campbell - where they order the Tuna Melt & puke). For S3 & S4 - Studios were in Mississauga, city immediately west of Toronto, just south of Toronto Pearson airport. |

They are not close at all. Here's a google map layout for you: http://goo.gl/maps/PaOna You'd be looking at a good solid hour of travel. If you're doing an RPF then I would just use the Mississauga location. If you're doing a character fic, then use 51 Division as the location (we'd say "fifty-one division" not "fifty-first division"). In the show the front exterior is real life 51 Division with a fake sign over their real sign. http://goo.gl/maps/I3GAH This has been consistent since S1 and will likely stay consistent. This exterior of the sallyport is in Mississauga: https://twitter.com/StarryDreamer01/status/353314951013756928/photo/1 is actually just a set. If you look at S1/2 you'll see the wall on the left make it's appearance there too. The gates, etc. are probably torn down as a set. So that will go up in the new location. The only thing that might look different is the wall of the building (which if you look closely you can see a marked difference over the seasons because the old set was brick). The view from the sallyport looking out to the "street" (what is really just a parking lot/driveway) will obviously change. But I suspect they'll just play it off as though they're in a different area of the building. On the show it looks like a big parking lot due to perspective. But in reality, it fits maybe 7-8 cars comfortably. |

What? The studio Rookie Blue has been filming in the past 2 or 3 years is no longer available? When they resume filming in january will they still be filming in or very near Toronto or are they going to go somewhere completely different? I like the fact that they actually shoot scenes in Toronto. It would be a same if they are going to be filming elsewhere and pretend it's the Toronto area. |

The Greater Toronto Area is expansive. They've been filming in Mississauga (which is a suburb outside of Toronto) for 2 years now and everyone saw it as Toronto. There are hundreds upon hundreds of locations in and around the GTA where they could film and it would still look like "51 Division Toronto." I am certain they will still be in the GTA because that's where the actors all live. They'd have to be in a commutable distance so that the drivers can easily pick them up and drop them off. |

The old RB studio (Seasons 1-2) on Front St E also appeared in 2.1: when Andy confronts the shooter on the rooftop, they're on the studio's roof - you can see 51 Division (RB's 15) on the right side of the shot (the scenes before, when Andy's in the dorm room, then runs up the fire escape, were shot at Wycliffe College, U of t - clever editing) This neighbour is almost unrecognizable compared to two years ago when RB left - which is both a good and bad thing for the city!
