Well me liking a character doesn't always just have something to do with the ability of the actor to portray the story they're given in a believable way. To me the role said character plays overall has to be taken into consideration, plus writing and how the character fits into the existing dynamics and how the characters you already like see and accept her.
To me personally, despite Rachael doing an exellent job, especially in 4x11, portraying M suffering from the effects of the illness/disorder, doesn't change the fact that I mostly see the character M as an obstacle first and her own story behind that.
Plus I don't exactly understand why they had to make her be the one suffering from bi-polar disorder. To make that the reason that she's emotional distant from everyone, including Sam who she supposedly grows to love? Or just to make me as the viewer feel sorry for her despite Sam being with her when he in reality still loves Andy?
I think they could've done something different with the mental health storyline than they did, because to me it looks like they might've choosen to do it because it is a very important issue in our society, but the way they handled it wasn't very uplifting (wrong word but I can't think of a better choice right now) for those who actually suffer from bi-polar disorder in real life or encourage them to actually be more open about it and they(the writers) certainly didn't show those who never came in contact with a person suffering from a mental disorder that they're able to life a normal life on their own. I mean M could for a while but then she choose to not take her meds anymore and her condition became unbalanced and affected every aspect of her life up until a point where she lost everything that's important to her. I mean in a way they just went the same path that a lot of shows decide to go. So I'd rather they wouldn't have decided to do that storyline. I mean maybe they should've done it with another character or not to add to the dramatic effect.

And if I read that link about the new show RA is on right, she will be playing a photographer. That's interesting because she does that in real life too, if I'm not mistaken. So she once wanted to be a cop in real life and is also a photographer...

very well said and I totally agree with you on the negative message for people with mental/medical conditions

Yes, I was expecting a lot more from Marlo's storyline and it was a huge disappointment to me. They put her there only to represent an obstacle for Sam and Andy reunion, nothing more, instead of giving Rachel a decent role in the show.

I wasn't talking about the character actually, I just didn't enjoy watching Rachel in this role. Sometimes she would roll her eyes to show that she was "bad-ass" or make decisions with her facial expressions that just didn't suit the scene IMO.

Well that could/would play a role in how you or anyone sees the character. But I do agree about that.
I mean if we wouldn't have known that M was all about the job, her eye-rolling and the facial expressions could've been something that expresses M's dislike of Andy or the fact that she has to deal with her. I mean I personally only saw either one when M was confronted with Andy. And that one time in 4x1 when she put Chris or Gail in her place. I mean when she was with Sam she seemed overly happy at times, I mean in such a way that it seemed fake. And then there where times where I didn't get any emotion. I mean I get that that might've been explained by her being on meds and her suffering from bi-polar disorder, but still...
The whole thing about M being a bad-ass cop or all about the job totally isn't what I saw on screen anyway so...

DId you guys see that Rachael spoke of M in the past tense on twitter? What do you guys think about that?

I understand that you criticize Marlo's facial expressions.
But we don't know what was written in the script she was given. Maybe it mentioned the eye-rolls. And we don't know what the director wanted her to do in that moment either. Ben just mentioned that writers and actors are not always on the same page. In this case I blame the animosity towards Marlo more on the writers than on Rachael's portrayal.
And I don't know anything about professional cameras, however they still use film instead of digital cameras on RB. Maybe that made it more difficult to determine how she comes across on screen...
Do we know how much stage experience Rachael has? Because usually actors who just finished a play are often overplaying their characters for the camera. They have to go big for the live audience. But on screen little gestures will be quite enough.
Of course the other actors are doing just fine. Then again she was new to the cast and had to find her role in the environment quickly. And her role was pretty challenging: She is the new love interest for one of the leads and she has the mental health issues as well.

I think a lot of Marlo's facial expressions are in fact Rachael's personal facial expressions. I've seen some other things she played in and she does similar things like the eye rolls and mouth thing. That is just the way she acts and not what was written but we probably find it extra annoying because she is/was with Sam. But in the end the director decided to focus on her when she did those things (eye roll etc.) so it must also have served a purpose on the show. That is probably part of why they decided to hire her for the role.

I'm still curious how she would have been received and perceived if she wasn't romantically linked to Sam.

Her mouth thing would still bug me and if we never saw her "home" life she wouldn;t be very likeable...to me at least.
