Axel

Axel battled with himself. "Should I go speak to those foxes? Maybe they will let me meet Rangiferina? Oh, but what if they tear me to pieces? I wouldn't like that. Oooh, why is this so hard?" He was behind a bush at the edge of the creek and a group of foxes were on the opposite side of the creek. They were speaking amongst themselves and paying no attention to the noises coming from the bush. The hair on Axel's tail stuck off every which way, an indicator of his discomfort. He kept backing up away from his bush until his rear was dangerously close to a tangle of thorns.

"Oh, I can't do this..." Axel thought to himself backing himself up until he hit the thorny mass. Yelping and plunging forward, he stumbled into the creek, startling the other foxes. Axel groaned and knew he had just made a fool out of himself. He feebly stood up and apologized with his head hung low. As he turned to leave, the voice of a fox stopped him.

"Like dramatic entrances, eh?" Foxes giggled at the remark but Axel only felt shame. "Stupid, stupid, stupid..." said a voice in his mind. He began to walk off but the same voice he had heard earlier stopped him. "So, who are you? What tribe are you from? We are all members of Geal, which is a tribe of sorts. Led by the wise Rangiferina, though she doesn't like to admit to being our leader." Axel relayed the story of how he was lost to the fox and how he had no tribe. The fox pondered a moment and finally replied, "Maybe we can accept you here. First, however, we will need to ask Rangiferina. Try not to make such a startling entrance when you meet her, OK?"

Rangiferina

Rangiferina sat in the corner of her den, back towards the exit - after all she could always be certain that someone had her back, seeing as for some reason her den was never left unguarded. Though, at time the guards were not straight at the exit of it, but there was always someone at least nearby to make sure the safety of the "leader". She sighed at the thought, partly it disgusted her that she was held in such high position even though she had clearly noted that she did not care much for titles or taking responsibility for any others than herself. She shook her head and returned her thoughts and concentration to where it belonged - to her precious mushrooms.
Carefully she went through each, touching them with their paws to make sure their growth is not disturbed by any pests, then sniffing the air and perking ears - to see that the air flow is good and right for the little ones. They were entirely new kin she had been growing and she wanted to make certain she could make use of them when they were fully grown, after all she had no idea what they could possibly be used for... yet.

Her fur was a mess after the gardening work she had already done today, partly also because she had not been outside her cave for a while, trying to make sure her mushrooms have just the right environment, making holes to her den's roof and then blocking some when it was too much and making the ventilation just about perfect for her dear little ones. A smile of accomplishment escaped to her face, only for a slightest moment till she heard a familiar chirp - her companion. She sighed and got up, for a moment seeking places for her paws, careful where she placed them to as there was mushrooms around.

The den of hers was naturally dark and did not have much light in it except the few small rays of light from the tiny holes on roof here and there, not that it would have made a difference for her - for her it was only darkness, she had never seen what her den looked like... and she would possibly only be happy for that fact should she see it in the condition it was... if she did not live so highly for what she loved - the knowledge and gaining more of it.

By old reflex she turned her head towards the chirp and growled slightly. As always, the bird had landed at the entrance and jumped it's way to the end of the den, after all even if it could have flied, it was too dark for it to be safe... especially seeing as the mushrooms were very important to Rangiferina, the bird did not dare to make same mistake twice and take the fastest but not so safe route - just fly. When the bird got to it's friend, it jumped and flapped it's wings few times, flapping for a second near Rangifer's left ear and kicking the air with it's tiny legs, looking for something... Rangiferina turned her ear slightly, helping the bird's feet find the wooden ear ring of hers and as soon as the claws had wrapped around it, the bird calmed down and stopped flapping, starting a quick chirping. It was excited, that much the fox understood but she did not understand what exactly had gotten the little bird to such excited and unstable state of mind. The bird chirped loud and clear for a moment more, trying to get the fox to understand but soon enough understanding that she would not understand and it would be more useful to chirp the news to her mushrooms than to her... How ever, the bird turned it's head to exit and chirped on same tune as it always does when there is someone to be expected - this sign Rangiferina understood and turned around, taking some short, careful steps towards the exit - the bird continuously jumping from her ear to the top of her head, then to other ear, making a short chirp each time and this way guiding the fox through the worst.

Rangiferina shook her head to shoo the bird as she got close enough to the entrance. She did not need any unusual hearing to hear all the chatting and giggling. This was not unusual, but this time it seemed to be something that was out of normal to some extent and got her curious, even though she was not commonly the one to care about business of others. "Hmph, possibly they have found something of interest again...Hopely something of importance this time as well..." She grinned as she thought of the past few things the younger ones had been excited about. She did not waste more of her time to it but rather headed to see her herbs.... that is, until her left ear turned back towards the sounds. "Unfamiliar voice...? That could explain it." She paid no more attention to this voice, being sure she would sooner or later hear all about it... but rather she headed to the tiny pond she had managed to make with big amount of effort, wanting to ease watering all her precious plants.

As she got to the pond, she sat down next to it and lifted her right front paw to the cloth that covered big part of her face, placed a claw under it and pulled it off, dropping it near the pond - part of it hanging in the water since her aiming was never quite as accurate as one would wish. She did not bother to try open her eyes - it was no use and would only cause harm. She quickly dipped her paw to the pond and brushed it along her muzzle, repeating few times and then dipping the paw again to wash her eyes, growling to feeling the cold water, her eyes being overly sensitive to any touch and just not used to this washing. She went to her herb plantation, the bird quickly flying to the cloth, picking it to it's beak and barely being able to fly it to the fox as it was slightly to the heavier side - for a bird of that size. Rangiferina picked some herbs from her patch, took the cloth and thanked the bird... She placed the cloth on ground, fur side down and then placed the herbs on it, snatching some berries from the tiny pouch she carried on her front leg and smashing them to the herbs and then just bowing her head down, near to the cloth and for a moment just concentrating on getting the cloth back to cover her eyes, tricky as it always was to do it on her own - but she never accepted help, it was something that truly got on her pride.

The sounds were closer. She could always ignore it all and for a moment go hide. There were many hiding places after all, even though for here many were not accessible or if they were, it was hard to get back out from them. She sighed deeply, turning back towards her den. "I certainly should not have stayed so close to the other foxes... They clearly can not do slightest decision on their own... I am guessing this will be yet another unimportant matter I will "solve" for them..." She slowly headed to her den, head low and the fur of her neck up in spikes - annoyance had gotten to her already even though she was still on her own... for a brief moment at least.

Axel

His fur still damp and his tail dragging on the ground, Axel made walked along with the group of foxes. His new companions pestered him with questions which he tried to answer without making himself look dumb. Slowly the group made their way through the thick forest that hid the creek away from anything that was less than peaceful. The first fox that spoke to Axel walked beside him and the rest gathered around.

"Harlows the name. So, Axel, what were you doing behind that bush? The others and I were discussing some tribe matters. Seems that a new tribe has set up shop and their values are quite contrary to ours..." With that last remark, the fox next to Axel paused and looked ahead. The group had arrived at a sort of fork in the creek. Following one branch would lead you out of the forest and the other would lead you to the fox dens. At the center of the den grounds was Rangiferina's den. To the left and to the right of her den were two smaller dens, where guards slept.

"Well... I guess since I am too weak to make it in other tribes I went searching for one that wasn't so obsessed with physical power. Then I heard about Geal and I have been following clues that led me to the creek. I am not sure if it means much, but I am quiet and sort of intelligent. I also hunt well... I hope maybe these qualities make up for my being so puny?" Axel answered. Harlow sat for a moment and looked at Axel. This made him uncomfortable and he laid his ears flat against his head and backed away.

"Axel, my boy, in this tribe the physical power does not matter so much. Our leader, why... She's blind. Anyway, we've arrived at the fork. We need to turn right here and get going if we are to make it to the dens anytime soon." And with that the foxes marched onward, in silence.

They reached the dens in good time and made their way up to the center. Finding Rangiferina in her den, Harlow sat outside of the den and began to tell Axel how to behave around her. Other foxes chimed in as well. Axel's stomach felt all twisted and butterflies raged inside it. Axel and Harlow quietly entered the den.

Rangiferina

Rangiferina found her way to the end of her den, accompanied by her bird companion. The bird kept chirping and chirping, getting on her nerves with it's presence - especially since the noise came from right next to her ear. She growled and the bird got silent, understanding that it was simply being too loud and too excited.

Rangifer settled down near the other patch of mushrooms, yet another rarer kin she had taken a try to grow. It was placed right under a tiny ray of light and she tried to make sure that the ground was dry near those mushrooms for they were quite a special bunch and for that fact they were difficult for her to grow. She tried the ground with her paw and for a moment pondered, then left it be and headed for her sleeping place... A small pile of dried grass near the back of the cave in one clear corner, some rays of light from the roof right to it.

She yawned and stepped in a circle for a moment, making her place and then laying down. It was not long that she could have had her eyes closed before she heard steps and talking from the entrance, couldn't help but sigh deeply. "They just can't get through a day without pestering me, can they..." She thought to herself and grinned, not bothering to get up but lifts her head.

"Scaring yet another traveller with your horrifying tales of me, Harlow? You never seem to give them a break. " She sounded horribly serious but the bird began it's chirping again and hopped to Rangifer's left front paw, shutting up to pick a berry from the tiny pouch on Rangifer's leg and happily concentrated on eating it, leaving Rangiferina in peace with these visitors... Peace she didn't necessarily want.

"What is it this time, someone dug up your weeds?" Her head was towards them even though she did not see them, could only listen and trust her ears. She was familiar with Harlow, after all this one was the one whom took most of the time she had to spend amongst the other foxes. She turned her head towards where she assumed this other one to be, looking as serious as ever.

"Now... What may your business be in my den? I have reason to believe I have not met you before... And that would be a surprise if you would have been around longer." She spoke silently but was certain they could hear her. Her voice had certain tone with mix of bitterness to it, clearly this bitterness was aimed to Harlow and possibly the other foxes that thought of her too highly.

She, without having to do anything special, knew this new one was nervous... All of them were after going through Harlow's "introduction". Her presence softened and she actually tried to smile as sweetly as she could, somewhat only to take the slightest chance at possibly annoying Harlow a bit.
"Speak freely, my friend... You are safe here." She spoke softly, warmly and as she said what she did, she nodded meaningfully towards Harlow, as if she meant it was Harlow this stranger was safe from. For many who knew her ways it would have been confusing to see and hear her being so soft instead of her harsh usual self.
Even the bird seemed confused - for a moment it stopped concentrating on the berry and stared up to Rangiferina, the kindness having gotten the poor bird off guard. The bird let out a short chirp before continuing with the berry as soon as it noticed there was something up with it.

Rangiferina was entertained, even though she normally did not care to be any warmer and friendlier than necessary, but after such long instructions, she felt like she should knock Harlow's pride slightly.

Axel

Harlow Grumbled and found an excuse to leave. Finding himself alone with Rangiferina, finally, he relayed his life story nervously. To finish, he offered this remark, "So, anyway... Yeah. I thought maybe I'd join this tribe. And... They told me to ask you first. Anyway... I'll go. I don't think I belong here." Axel looked away and turned to leave.

OOC:
I am thinking of turning Harlow into a full time character.... But I dunno yet. Hehe, "So, anyway... Yeah. I thought maybe I'd join this tribe. And... They told me to ask you first. Anyway... I'll go. I don't think I belong here." sounds like something I'd say.

Rangiferina

Rangifer was quiet, listened. She nodded silently here and there, listening the poor fellow talk. Clearly he was nervous, possibly even afraid. Hearing his remark she tilted her head back a little, laughing heartily. "Is that how easily you give up, how easily you change your mind?" She got up, slowly walked towards Axel - the bird chirped silently when she was right in front of him. She circled him and started talking to him silently. "You are uncertain of yourself. Why would you even bother to offer yourself to a tribe if you are going to turn the offer down yourself before anyone can even say a word? Should you be in territory of some more... evil... tribe... You would not be looked at kindly for they do not accept weaklings... Of mind or body."

Right after saying this she stopped in front of him, standing proud and holding her head high. Even though one would know she was blind, they could always feel her looking at them... Possibly made it scarier than it would have been, should she actually see. After a while of silently standing in front of him, she smiled. "If you are going to be as unsure as you let me understand... You could as well be marked as traitor, straight away... If you can not make up your mind about where you want to be, where you should be... How do you think you are going to make it in any tribe, hmm?" She sounded soft, not as much mean as she was honest to him.

She sat down and lifted her front paw to his eye level. The bird jumped to it quickly and looked at Axel, tilting it's head from side to side and then giving a loud chirp to him. Rangiferina spoke to him, on firm tone that gave no room for doubt on her words. "If you did not think you belonged here, why did you come in first place? You don't sound stupid... Try to make up your mind." The bird jumped onto his nose and at that moment Rangifer got up and headed past Axel, towards the exit of the cave. As she was about to exit the cave, she stopped and turned her head back a little to speak to him. "Think in peace, young soul... You are free to stay or leave. You mean no harm, I see no reason why you could not stay here, should you truly want to." She didn't say any more than that but rather headed out. She yawned and shook her head - young ones, never able to decide what they want.

She headed towards the dens of other foxes, walking the route by memory. The bird had returned to her after spending a moment chirping to Axel, now guiding Rangifer when she was about to go wrong. She was not worried about her den or her plants. She trusted no harm to come to them just for leaving Axel there with them - perhaps he would not even dare to leave the den. The thought amused her, making her smile.

Axel

Axel sat and pondered. He thought about what he really wanted, if he really had anything to offer, if he was too weak to be a member of this tribe. His mind wandered back to his lonely childhood, how he had spent so much time searching for this tribe. He had been so sure that he wanted this for so long, how could he want anything else?

"How wonderful it would be to belong here. I must try to be more sure of myself." Axel thought to himself. He paced back and forth, rehearsing what he would say in his mind. As soon as he had found the words, he sat at the entrance of the den. With new found determination, Axel trotted out of the den and made a beeline to where Rangiferina was walking. He walked with her, but a few steps behind her. Suddenly, as if all the courage he had gathered up inside him exploded, he called out to Rangifernia,

"I have decided I really want to stay here!" His voice sounded strange and a bit yippy. It was confident and nervous all at the same time. His confidence died down a little as he quietly added the remark "As long as it's still ok. I mean... I will learn to be more confident. I DO want this. It may be the only thing I am sure of right now."
