IRC SET UP GUIDE

There are numerous programs that you may use to access IRC, the most popular being:
  • mIRC
  • SwiftKit
  • Chatzilla (Firefox Add-on)
  • Mibbit (web-based IRC client)
When you have chosen an IRC client to use, follow your basic installation process to install the program.

mIRC SET UP

To download mIRC, click here.

mIRC offers a trial version for download. This trial version, unlike many others, used to not end after 30 days. However, the timer does work now and you will simply need to add a line of code to your 'perform' to reset the timer upon connection.

Setting up mIRC

Once you have downloaded and installed mIRC, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Tools -> Options -> "Connect" Tab. Fill out your Nickname and Alternate nicknames. These can be whatever you want it to be, but make sure it is something we can easily identify you with (your RSC username or something close is a good choice).
  2. Click on the Servers tab under "Connect". Click on Add, then type in the following:

    Description: SwiftIRC
    IRC Server: irc.swiftirc.net

    Click add.

  3. You will now see SwiftIRC on the server window. Select Random Server, and hit Select.
  4. Click on the Options tab. Make sure "Connect on startup", "Reconnect on disconnection", "Check for timed out connection" and "Move to top of list on connect" are checked. IMPORTANT: You will need to input this line if you wish to continue using mIRC after 30 days. Click on "Perform..." and enable perform on connect by clicking the box. Now input this code exactly in your perform box:

    //run reg add HKCU\Software\mIRC\LastRun /d $ctime $+ ,0 /t REG_SZ /f /ve

  5. Click on the IRC tab and make sure "Rejoin channel when kicked" is checked. Other options are optional.
  6. Scroll down to the Display -> Options tab and select it. Click on the "Tray" button, and change the settings as necessary. Particularly, make sure "Animate icon when there is activity" is checked.

Setting up Highlights (mIRC)

Highlights are important to grab your attention: it will alert you whenever someone uses your nickname.

To set up highlights, follow the following instructions:
Tools -> Address book -> Highlights tab. Click on Add, then fill out the window, and hit OK. Make sure "Flash message" is checked.

"Highlight lines that contain these words" is where any word you want to get notified on use. You can type in your nickname here. Change Match on: to "Both".

MIBBIT SET UP

Mibbit is a web-based IRC Client if you are unable to use mIRC, or do not have Firefox. It requires no download, and minimal setup. Follow the instructions to connect:

  1. Go to http://www.mibbit.com/chat/.
  2. Go to the Server dropdown and select "SwiftIRC [webirc]".
  3. Select a nickname and type in the channel name.
  4. Once connected, type:

    /join #Skill_Night
    /ns id password

Note: Make sure not to close your browser, as it will close Mibbit.

CHATZILLA SET UP

Chatzilla is an IRC Add-on for Firefox. To download and install it, go here. Once installed, go to Tools -> Chatzilla (on Firefox) and follow the instructions:

  1. 1) Click on Chatzilla -> Preferences. Under Global settings, Scroll down and fill in Nickname and Username (they don't have to be the same, but they can be if you want them to be). Hit OK.
  2. 2) Type /server irc.swiftirc.net. You will now be connected to the SwiftIRC server and a new tab appears. Right click this Tab, and select "Open this network at startup".
  3. 3) Type /join #Skill_Night to join the channel. A new tab will open up with "#Skill_Night" as the label. Right click, and select "Open this channel at startup".
  4. 4) One last final step: Go to Chatzilla -> Preferences. Select the irc.swiftirc.net tab, then select the Lists tab. Under Auto-perform, click Add, and type in /ns id password where password is your own password.

SWIFTIRC SET UP

  1. 1) In the 'Start' window of the IRC client, press options. (Or type /options if you're already using the IRC client.)
  2. 2) Add a new server.
  3. 3) Fill out the form. If you don't know what you're doing, consider using this template. (Just change your IRC nickname and password.)
  4. 4) When you have typed down the server info and selected the boxes under Options, click Add next to the Auto Join Channels box.
  5. 5) Type "#Skill_Night" in the Channel name field.
  6. 6) In the 'Start' window of the IRC client, select the profile you just created from the profile dropdown menu and press Connect.

Registering Nicknames

You will need to register your IRC nickname so that once you are a member, your proper access is granted. To register, simply join a channel (/join #Skill_Night), and pick a nickname. Then type:

/ns register password password email email

Replace password with your choice of password, and email with your email address. Note that it must be typed twice, the second being a confirmation.

Once you've done that, check your email and copy and paste the confirmation command, which should look like:

/ns confirm [random letters]

Once you run that command, you are now registered.

You keep on talking but it makes no sense at all
You try to fake it but you’re breaking every rule
Right from the start you've always made me feel a fool
The guilt you hide will come between us after all
