What is the Magistrates job and what do they do? The magistrates are the judicial arm of the law of the kingdom of Stormwind. It is the duty of the magistrates to see to it the letter of the law is carried out by interpreting the laws as set down by the King and the house of Nobles, and issuing final judgment in cases of legal transgression. It is the role and duty of the magistrates to hold court of law to determine if someone accused of violating the kings law is guilty or not guilty of the transgression in question, and if found to be guilty assign appropriate punishment. The magistrates can also act as moderators in cases where two sides are in disagreement but no laws have been broken, such as disputes to property, land and similar situations. It is also required that a magistrate be in attendance for a duel to be considered a lawful one. Though the practice is forbidden inside the walls of Stormwind city itself the practice is allowed outside of the walls, this land is still the kings land and his laws still apply however, and as such a magistrate is required as the outcome of a duel might otherwise violate one or several of the kings laws, the laws of assault and manslaughter being predominant concerns. There are also cases where a magistrate’s signature is required for a writ to be considered legally valid, such as a warrant. --- There are there ranks within the magistrates: - The Lord/Lady High magistrate is the highest legal authority within the kingdom second only to the king himself. The Lord Magistrate has to already be a member of the House, and once sworn in his task includes trying serious offences, arranging trials and appeals, and appointing and overseeing magistrates. His assent is needed for people to become magistrates. - Magistrates are justices of the King's Peace in his realm, and as such will be asked to judge cases and preside over trials as they come. They need not be noble, but they shall be of good standing with the kingdom. A magistrate's first duty is to the law, not to his morality or sense of justice; further, his duty is also to the truth, or rather, to the true application of the law. The magistrate's only role is to decide judiciously and wisely what the verdict is, and then what the sentence should be. Moreover they should decide this according to the letter of the law - The Trainee Magistrates: Anyone may apply to become a magistrate but none are instantly appointed to the position. All applicants, having passed the preliminary interview, must undergo a period of on the job training and evaluation to assess their ability to interpret the law and work alongside their fellow agents of the crown to uphold the kings law.
