WELCOME TO COLUMBIA enjoy your stay.
- Columbia University is an Ivy League college. It prides itself for it's challenging academic program and bright young students. To most parents eager to send their above average child away to school, Columbia looks like a perfect choice. Floods of students enter through Columbia's gates every year. Even more graduate and become some of the world's most prominent figures. Whether it be Business, Law, Medicine or English, Columbia has a variety of programs that is sure to fit an able student's needs. Students who get into Columbia University are limited. They come from all over the world from more than fifty different countries and all fifty states.
Located in the heart of New York City, Columbia offers students a good environment to connect socially to their fellow classmates and world-leading scholars in New York City. The school itself is large, having more than ten different schools itself inside of the campus. Aside from academics, Columbia University focuses on student life. There's always some sort of concert, play or art exhibition going on inside of Columbia's campus.
Columbia prides itself on keeping the students involved with their staff and in the school. Students who attend Columbia are required to intern in New York City for their sophomore or junior years. There is one year of studying a broad, where a student must go to another country, or a surrounding state, to work with different cultures in their area of study. Columbia helps students get jobs right after they graduate from college. The structure and ideas behind Columbia University are wonderful. But what happens between the cracks?
Aside from the wonderful facade Columbian students put on, what goes on behind the scenes is a completely different story. Most of the students who attend Columbia have an entirely different world aside from their academic life. Between the pressure to get top grades to remain at the University and troubles in their own social life, the life of a Columbian student is never easy. The Greek life at Columbia make matters even worse.
As the saying goes, "High school never ends." In Columbia, that's entirely too true. Every club and organization has its own clique. Most students stay in the realms of their own social party, refusing to befriend someone who doesn't belong in their social circle. The various organizations only help to segregate the students based on student activities. It's rare, for instance, to see a girl in a sorority talk to a girl in the speech and debate club. Labels don't disappear after high school. While each individual has a chance to re-establish themselves, once they enter a clique, they're there for the remaining four years of their stay at Columbia. The members of the different clubs and activities are well-known. For a male in a fraternity, it would be absolute suicide to flirt with a girl outside of a sorority.
Most of the students who attend Columbia are stuck up in a way. They think they're better than everyone else which only escalates the tension between students. Arrogance and bigotry is no stranger to Columbia University. It's funny how students come from across the globe only to face something like that.
While surviving college and maintaining a high social profile, every second counts?. It's a jungle in here.
