July 18, 2374 Starbase 375. Commander Rebecca Sandoval was working on a report in station's cafe'. Her ever present coffee was not far from reach. So the war had not gone well. Deep Space Nine had been lost. Fall back and retreat. That was their new motto, and troop morale was at a all time low. Rebecca couldn't blame them. She was having a hard time with it too. That was way she chose today to do her work off the ship. She needed to get away. Rebecca sat back in the booth to stretch, and saw him. A handsome man with a boyish grin, disheveled brown hair, and a sexy stubble. All the girls dreamed of him, except for her. She knew him too well. Pushing the PADD aside she leapt out of the booth and into the promenade. "Nick! Nicholas Ryder!" |

Nick turned when he heard his name called by a very familiar redhead. He already had his ever present coffee 'urn' tucked under his arm and a briefcase full of padds in his hand. "Holy crap on a warp core..." he chuckled. "You actually tore yourself away from the ship." he walked over and set the briefcase down on the table. "Guess we both had the same idea. I had to get the hell away for a few hours." |

Rebecca wrapped her arms around Nick grinning ear to ear. "We were with the 5th Fleet at the battle of Vulcan. The Denver is practically being rebuilt. A captain eh? Well I guess lost that bet. So how have you been? What have you been up to?" |

"Oh way too much... " Nick said with a sigh as he hugged her. "Between the ASDB asking for ways of shoehorning new tech into old starships to running Intelligence missions... I think this is the first time about a week that I've had more than five minutes to myself. Corps of Engineers drafted me into helping with the 'Frankenfleet' which is an interesting challenge but... half of my shakedown cruises turn into running fights with Jem'Hadar ships." he said as he sat down and opened up his briefcase. "Yeah I know alllllll about the Denver's rebuild. They want to try and get some of my warp engine mods into her, which I keep telling them wasn't designed for a Galaxy class of that vintage, but whatever... " he held her hand and smiled. "So what have you been up to besides 'same shit, different day'? I was just telling Julie that it felt like an age since you and I last met up in person." |

"Well, I was drafted," she said with a grin and a gesture of both hands. "Lucky as hell to be honest. I was with the 7th Fleet at Tyra. Our chief engineer was killed early on in the battle, and honestly I didn't think I was going to be able to hold her together. It was touch and go with three Jem'hadar fighters on our tail as we retreated. With the fleet nearly completely wiped out Starfleet folded us into the 5th and 8th fleets." She fell into a comfortable step with Nick. It was one of those things that just happened when you were close to someone. "How is Julie?" Rebecca had never liked Nick's wife, but he was smitten over her. It made Nick happy. so she went along with it. She tried hiding her feelings of the woman with varying degrees of success. "Still married I take it?" |

"Yeah, fake deaths and all... still crazy after all these years." Nick chuckled. "Angel and Olivia are growing like weeds. Can certainly tell which twin is who's... Angel is totally my girl. Olivia is already taking after her mother. I miss seeing them, mom has them on Earth, she's been running a hospital out of Poland with my sister, Federation thought it was a good idea to 'hide' some of the more VIP injured there. About forty Federation Council members were attacked just outside the Rigel system when their ship was boarded by the Jem'Hadar. War is getting closer and closer to home." |

"I miss those girls. They were always so sweet." She placed a hand on his shoulder, "Don't do what I did and let this job get in the way of them okay? You don't want to be an old man and regret missed moments okay?"

"I told Julie that once the war is over... I'm taking the girls on a ship with me. Providing I don't screw something up in the meantime, but I want a ship under my butt once this is over. 414th Engineering Fleet is my plan. Although I wouldn't really mind getting one of the Intelligence ships I designed, but I really want a Sovereign. Those long nacelles are perfect for my new warp system. Now if I had MY way... we'd get that Erebus project finished. God that is a sexy beast you designed. Prettier than my Independence, but then again, mine was designed to swallow ships so we can fix 'em in a battle, your's was designed to kick ass, spit fighters and split up. Sucks that the Prometheus Project stole that... she'll probably launch within the next few months, providing that we don't lose more of our engineers. Jem'Hadar are getting smart, they're trying to take out our repair stations. We're running out of Warp Tugs." |

"Nah. It was a flight of fancy while I was at the Academy. Starfleet isn't going build a carrier, their emphasis is battleships or light escorts like the Defiant..." She smiled a little embarrassed. "But, I did submit it to the ASDB a few years after I graduated. They of course rejected the idea. Said, 'Peregrine fighters in our opinion, and based on computer models will be ineffective against the Borg. Existing designs can handle incursions from the Romulans, Cardassians, and Breen. Damn photographic memory. You can remember the rejection letters exactly too."

Nick nodded his head. "Yeah I've been pushing for the Independence project for a while and they're telling me 'too complex a design for this time, just find ways of making old work.'. Although after the war... never know." he winked his eye at her. "The Admiral that wrote that rejection letter was recently dismissed because he put a roofy in Commodore Tina Quinlan's drink... not knowing she was a flag. So you never know, but the Borg aren't the major threat like they were a few years back. Clearly this stupid ass idea of thinking our current fleet is 'enough' is not winning us this war. I swear, if we lose a major Federation founding system, Earth, Andor, Vulcan, Tellar, then they're going to need to listen to people who have more vision." He took a swig of his coffee and sighed. "I am just having a real hard time being told 'no you can't innovate, just make shit work' Innovation is what won us World War 2. We need carriers. We need things that can go toe to toe with those damn Jem'Hadar fighters. Peregrine fighters are fine and dandy, but we need something more agile and easier to maintain." |

"How scandalous!" She grinned. "I tell you what. When I make admiral I'll make sure you get Independence. You know what's going on? Admiral Ross must have something big planned. There must be at least 200 ships here." |

"Pretty sure we're going to retake DS9... of course, we could be doing some assault on some other system, but I did see the Defiant getting some resupplies. Depends on if Sisko finally has a plan." Nick shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not exactly looking forward to that, I'm a pretty decent tactician of late, kept me alive, but I dunno... we're going to lose a lot more ships and a lot more souls." |

"That means one thing; the Dominion has figured out how to disable the minefield, or they already have. You're right, the butcher bill will be astounding. The Denver needs a chief engineer. Starfleet couldn't send a replacement. What do you say? Want to take a demotion and be the engineer?"

"I got a ship of my own but y'know... it's a hell of a lot smaller than the Denver. I can give the brass a line of shit about how it's not really in shape for an op like that. Although Galaxy classes have been getting tore through like tissue paper. So yeah... I think I will take you up on that, I've got some shield mods I can install, should keep you in the fight." Nick said as he handed her a padd. "We can't keep losing big ships like the Denver." |

She examined the PADD, "That could work." She entered commands into it and handed it back. "What do you think of this? Your modifications to the emitters and then tapping power from the warp core. If we are in battle we won't need the warp engines. The downside, there won't be power to the warp coils if we need them in an emergency, and if trinary backups fail an overload could make it's way to the core... and well I don't have to tell you what happens next." They paused at a bench and she sat down. She ran her fingers through the firey mane and sighed, "Been serving double duty as the Cheif Engineer and first officer since the warp coolant ruptured in engineering at Tyra. All of the officers," she shuddered. "All of the officers didn't make it except for Ensign Jerika Lynch. She was leading damage control efforts on deck 13. I know right? Thirteen was her lucky number. She is so green the ink on her Academy diploma is still wet. I just don't feel comfortable promoting her. Chief Petty Officer K'meck has been in Starfleet for 30 years. But, there's discipline problems and the fact that he's only enlisted so there would be problems with him issuing orders to Ensign Lynch." Edited by Rebecca Talon, Feb 20 2018, 12:20 AM.
