"Traitor," she whispered. "And for your information I was on the Denver. The new warp core arrived last night."

"Just couldn't keep your hands off her core..." Nick whispered. "At least this time you're the one who came late, not me."

"You're such a woman," she teased him in a hushed tone.

"Okay let's begin," Admiral Ross announced. "Captain Nicholas Ryder in recognition of leadership, and meritorious conduct at the Battle to Retake Deep Space 9, and in particular volunteering for said mission to fill critical personnel gaps Starfleet Command awards you the Christopher Pike Medal of Valor."

Nick gave Ross a salute as the medal was pinned to his uniform. "Thank you sir. Just part of my job."

Ross smiled and shook Nick's hand. "Commander Rebecca Rose Sandoval for heroism above and beyond the call of duty, that directly resulted in the saving the lives of the USS Ajax Starfleet Command awards you the Starfleet Medal of Honor." Ross clipped the medal to her jacket and shook her hand. "Congratulations, and now one more thing." Ross reached into a pocket and produced a small gold pip. He pinned it to her collar, "congratulations Captain Sandoval."

From a corner, a whistle came out with the rest of the applause. "You go girl!" Tess called out.

"Mom!" Nick winced and groaned as he covered his face.

"I watched you both come up and she's deserved that fourth pip for a long time. I also outrank you both so I can embarrass you." Commodore Tess Ryder said as she walked over to Becca and shook her hand. "Congratulations Captain. I am sure everyone who you served with in this operation has your grateful thanks for getting them home. You're one of the few ships with out massive loss of life."

Sisko nodded gravely, "But we got the job done."

Rebecca agreed. "Thank you Commodore. We still have a lot of work to do. This war is hardly over."

"Of course, but you did good work. I am proud of you Rebecca." Tess said with a smile. "And Starfleet does need more female CO's with level heads and creative ideas."

Ross smirked and chuckled as he patted her shoulder. "Like you Commodore?"

"I'm just an old Polish doctor." Tess said with a slight laugh. "Now, I did want to make a small announcement, as the Hope is here, Doctor Bashir, you are able to take some well deserved time off, your staff has been working non stop since the fleet returned."

"Ah, thank you. But I am quite..." Bashir said with a smile.

"Julian, when someone offers you time off you say 'yes'" O'Brien said with a smirk and slapped his back. "We've got a backlog of holosuite stories to finish."

"The Augment and the Engineer... reminds me of a couple of young officers I know." Tess whispered to her son and Becca. "Starfleet did want me to... audit Bashir, but they should know by now where MY loyalties lie. Now... Rebecca. Since you are now part of the Captain's rank... I have some place to take you."

Rebecca looked worried. She looked around for help, and made eye contact with General Martok who only gave her a knowing smile. "Take me? Take me where. This isn't some sort of weird initiation where I have to eat the heart of targ is it?"

"No I take you to drink beer and eat headcheese." Tess said with a laugh. "Well you can eat whatever you want, I have a taste for some sultz like my mother used to make, but no one makes it like her." she patted her shoulder. "Nick has work to do, so it's just us. I also... wanted to speak with you alone."

"I got another place in mind." Tess said with a wink. "Mostly I want to spend some time with you, when I heard about the Denver, I naturally worried about Nick but I also worry about you. You've been his best friend for a very long time and I consider you part of the family. I don't sponsor many but I sponsored you. Considering of my children, only Nick followed me into Starfleet, Tony and Natalia focused on commercial science, Jenny at least followed me into medicine but refuses to be an officer. Nick's 'twin' Dom, well... he's basically Nick but I rarely see him anymore. So really, you and he are all I got that I can share things with."

"Well, mom," she said with a grin and a wink. She shrugged in the realization. "You know, you have always been a mother figure to me. I lost my mom when I was real young. A Cardassian raid claimed her. You have filled that need for a young woman. I thank you for that."

She glanced around when they arrived at the entrance to the bar. "Where the hell did this come from? I've been on this station for weeks and I have never noticed it before."

"Because... you didn't have four of those on your collar." Tess said with a wink of her eye and pressed her hand to the old wood of the door. "Kind of exists when it needs to exist and well... you'll see when you go inside. I wanted to be the one to take you here first."

"The Captain's Table," she intoned. Trying to figure this out scientifically she frowned, and just shrugged and followed Tess in.

It was a bar, that that was all that she was certain of. The air was think with the smells of alcohol and cigar smoke. There was a polite buzz of conversation with the occasional outbursts of laughter.

On of the first patrons she noticed for the sea of colored uniforms was an older man. He wore a crisp white naval uniform. On the bar next to him was a naval hat, and the badge showed a red penate flag with a single white star.

"Is there some sort of costume contest tonight? If so he should win. He looks just like the Tintanic captain."
