Rebecca shrugged, "She has to learn sometime. You can watch holo-vids, and use holodeck simulations all day long, but there is something about the real thing that you can't prepare for. It's like your first combat. You train all of your career. You know what to do, but when the enemy is firing at you... well you either bend or break. A good many senior officers spent their entire careers on science ships and completely folded during the Dominion War. Some good people died, because of it. The Federation really needs two fleets. One to handle exploration and science and another to defend it."

Rebecca paused feeling all eyes on her. It made her a little uncomfortable. "Or take a clue from the US Marine Corps. Every officer is a combat officer first, and a scientist or whatever second. The Klingons or the Dominion or whoever doesn't care what color your uniform was before sitting in that center chair."

"Yeah I agree... Federation needs some changes. Although the way Julie and her FSS buddies are... they think they're going to be the ones to do it." Nick said and looked at Angelica. "I do worry about her generation, lot of threats still looming, we're not in a hot war at the moment but there are still a lot of enemies out there."

Rebecca nodded. She glared at the glass of water with disgust. She poured it out without ceremony, and grabbed a mug and filled it to the brim with the nearby coffee pot. She took a sip and smiled in delight. "God I needed this."

She sat down at the counter and stared into the cup. She cocked her head, and drowned. "My contact in Starfleet Intelligence told me that a tellerite was murdered in India." She gave Nick a look that told him that they thought the FSS was tied to it. The benefit of knowing each other for so long.

"India?" Angel raised an eyebrow. "I know I'm not supposed to say anything but... mom was heading to Pakistan." she looked at her father and Becca.

"Lot of non Terrans have been getting killed in that part of the world lately." Nick said somberly. "Tellerite... anyone we know?"

She shrugged, and picked at a cinnamon roll, "I don't know too many Tellerites, so I doubt it. We went to the Academy with one of those two Vulcans killed at that café in Prague. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but I would not be surprised of the culprit. The Federation is wisely keeping the news under wraps, but this could cause panic."

"Lot of things they're keeping under wraps." Nick said with a sigh. "We probably shouldn't be talking about this with you around Angel... but this is what you're going to be getting into."

"I know." Angel nodded her head and whispered. "It's the people mother works for... isn't it?"

Rebecca glanced at Nick, and then nodded. "I have sent out feelers to the New Obsidian Order, but Senator Tomarah is working with the Tal Shiar, and I am getting some disturbing reports from her. Rebeca looked around a picked up a PADD. She entered commands and handed it to Angel. "If you are going to stay in this conversation you will need this. Welcome to Starfleet Acting Ensign."

Angel held the padd in her hands and stared at it for a moment, there it was. Her future in her hand, a small glowing box waiting for her thumb print to accept the commission. Taking a deep breath she pressed her thumb to the padd and handed it to her father and looked at him. "I won't let you down. Either of you." she closed her eyes and got up from her seat and walked over to a drawer and pulled out a few things and then removed the false bottom. "Privacy screen filter." she said calmly and activated it on the middle of the table. "So is there anything I should keep my ears open for?"

"Everything," Rebecca stated. "Specifically listen for the name Tiberius." She glanced at Nick. "That's a name as far I can tell that even Starfleet Intelligence is unaware of. Your S31 connections might know more. After all if the Romulans know about this person it strands to reason S31 does too. Ensign you are to report to only myself or your father. You have top secret clearance, and will be officially attached to your father's command as his personal yeoman. But, you will need to attend the Academy to make this arraignment permanent."

"I already have enough credits to skip some of the... as dad put it... bullshit courses." Angel said as she looked at Becca. "I can read ten languages, speak five fluently and my math scores are better than dad's."

"Not shocking. Becca had to tutor me for what? Three semesters so I'd actually pass?" Nick chuckled lightly. "But what she's sayin', we have to make this as official as possible. I'll talk to Admiral V'Pier, his Changling ass owes me more than a few favors over the years, get you some provisional S31 clearance."

"Always liked him and Prue and Alex, and... he already sort of made the offer to me when I figured out he was a Changling, so you just have to tell him 'do it'." Angel said and reached out and touched Becca's hand. "I have always been loyal to you and daddy, I love my mother but you and dad have never given me a reason to not be honest. Just think... maybe in another decade or so, I'll be in a position to even have a command of my own. Give you another loyal Captain to back you up."

Rebecca squeezed her shoulder, "I have a bad feeling about this, and I want people I can trust. Not the kind that won't lie to me or let me down. The kind that will drop what they are doing and stand by me... even to the death. You will have that command. Of that I have no doubt. You are your father's child, but you have your mother's ambition, resourcefulness. Tell you what, we have a training sortie for tomorrow. Meet me at the Academy at 0800, and we'll beam up to the Erebus. I'll personally train you to pilot a fighter."

"Okay so... I would learn to pilot a fighter before Marcus who's been dying to learn for the past few years?" Angel rubbed her hands. "Ohhhh... this day is getting too good. Is this real? I mean... you're not just putting me on are you? Because if you two are, I am so sewing your pants together when you wake up in the morning..."

"It's real sweetie." Nick said as he got up and gave her a hug. "I have wanted to have you as my Yeoman since you were able to break my security code on my office. You and I have always had a special bond and when you were ready I wanted to have you at my side. Face it, you're going to ace the Academy and you have got such a future ahead of you." he looked at Becca and smiled. "And she doesn't sponsor many kids, but you young lady, you're special. A part of me hates this, that you're growing up so fast but then again, so did I and I still act far younger than I should."

"That IS very true." Angel teased.

"But I always tried to find time for all you kids, I always made time for the important things and the silly things. Yanking you kids out of PE class to take you on some silly adventure, not because it was educational or important but because we did it together and you needed that. And because wussy ass PE classes are nothing for people built like you and your siblings and it's not like you don't get enough PE just being Julie's kids." Nick said and looked into her eyes. "I know things are... a bit complex with your mother and I, but we still love each other and we love each of you. There are things going on... behind the scenes and I would rather have you in a position where you can be insulated and yet helpful. And... you ARE my heir. Only one of all you kids that really 'get' me and how I think and operate. Someday, I want to hand this over to you. Or at least let you wrap up my work for me. Either way, those mean kids... consider them a blessing, because now... we're ready to take the step that is going to create the Angelica Ryder that you deserve to be. Blow them away."

The Next Day --

Olivia returned from her 'training exercise', body covered in scratches and cuts, her yoga outfit pretty much ruined and torn, hair messed up and full of debris. Walking up the stairs to her bedroom, carrying the gun belt of one of the security guys that she took down. She didn't expect to see her twin sister in full Starfleet uniform, although wearing a skirt and tights and tall boots instead of slacks.

"Cosplaying again?" Olivia deadpanned as she walked into the bathroom and literally tore off her yoga outfit and threw it in the small garbage can.

"That was quick... I thought you'd be gone longer." Angel said as she touched up her makeup.

"I put three men into traction and I think one is going to walk with a limp for the rest of his life." Olivia said as she turned on the shower and walked in. "So what's with the uniform?"

"I'm going to be dad's new yeoman. My scores are high enough and he needs me." Angel said as she checked herself out in the mirror. "Think the skirt's too long?"

"I'd say it's almost too short. We're jailbait enough." Olivia chuckled as she washed off a day's worth of dirt and debris from her hair. "Oh God this feels so good... mom is insane."

"So she just dumped you there and said 'survive'?" Angel shook her head and handed her the bottle of shampoo. "Dad wasn't too happy about that. Kind of why he pushed this through with Aunt Becca."

"Not the worst idea. So you already doing the 'Fetch Angel Fetch' thing?" Olivia took the bottle and squirted it on her hair and let it drop into the water. "I'm seriously thinking there's something rotten in this state of Denmark. Kirby thinks so too."

"You don't think mom's..." Angel poked her head into the shower.

"No idea... but she's been pushing me a lot harder lately. Like she wants me ready to be like her." Olivia sighed. "Maybe I should join her, if you're with dad... and I'm thinking Kirby and I should team up."

"We're turning into adults sooner than we planned." Angel said softly and handed Olivia a towel. "Hey, don't tell Marcus, but Aunt Becca is teaching me to fly a fighter today."

"Oh shit... you know I'm going to tell him, watching him cry would be the highlight of my week." Olivia said with a wicked laugh as she toweled off.

"You're evil." Angel said as she stuck her tongue out at her.

"You're the 'good twin', I'm the 'evil twin'. Hey you ever get me more of that dark dark purple lipstick?" Olivia said as she looked in the mirror. "Kirby and I are going to annoy some Goth kids."

"Check my dresser. Sounds mean though." Angel said as she pinned her hair back.

"Not really... they were annoying one of our friends and I can't stand bullies." Olivia said and sat on the edge of the sink and put her foot up on the toilet tank and started to use a device to color her toe nails. "Hey I'm allowed to be immature for a little while longer. I'm not the one in a uniform. You look cute though."

"Thanks." Angel said as she pinned her Ensign rank pin on.

"Seriously? An Ensign? Okay now I'm jealous." Olivia said with a pout. "You're not going to let me wallow in high school alone?"

"You'll still have Marcus and Jack and Kirby." Angel said with a grin.

"Oh you know Jack spends most of his time in England, he's even talking all British. Marcus skips school like most of the time and Kirby and I... we're just trouble together." Olivia said with a smirk.

"Well... tell mom you're ready to join her. We're both smart enough to whip through the easy stuff and you kick ass, Intel would be stupid not to recruit you right off." Angel said and looked at the ruined yoga top. "Nipply?"

"Very funny." Olivia grumbled. "I survived, but barely... CIA office guard guys are good, tired but good." she glanced at her comm and rolled her eyes. "I spent a day in nothing but that, no food, just rain water filtered through my bra and all she can say is 'nice work Liv'? Seriously?"

"That's mom for you. Beats just a smiley face." Angel deadpanned.

"Girls!?" Julie's voice echoed through the house. "Who the fuck brought in carbs? Angelica!"

"The great carb hunter has returned." Angel said and quickly pulled an overcoat on over her uniform. "Don't tell mom about this yet."

"I want your black and white pleated skirt." Olivia said with a wink.

"Deal." Angel said and skipped down the stairs. "Mother... they were a gift... and the only one eating them were dad and Aunt Becca."

"Pfft... he shouldn't be eating that crap either. He's going to be another fat Admiral if he keeps that up." Julie said as she tossed the basket in the trash. "Where's Olivia?"

"Bathroom. Seriously mom... just her yoga gear and flip flips?" Angel rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.

"You did fine in a t-shirt and jeans, besides, that's all that girl wears, when is she NOT in Yoga gear?" Julie rolled her eyes and chuckled. "It's got a purpose, anyway aren't you going to be late for school?"

"Going in later." Angel said as she picked up her purse and grabbed an energy bar from the drawer. "I have some... paperwork I need to take care of."

"Paperwork?" Julie raised an eyebrow at her.

"School stuff... nothing important just annoying." Angel lied and picked up a pair of glasses from the little basket by the door. "Don't wait up, daddy's taking me home."

"You're almost an adult and you're still calling him 'daddy'?" Julie mused.

"I'm a proud daddy's girl and yes I DO call him Admiral Dad." Angel said and glanced up at the stairs. "Liv's dressed in something other than yoga gear.'

"Hah hah." Olivia said and walked down the stairs. "Mom... your 'flag'." she said and tossed her an old CIA name plate from the door of an office. "This has to be the last time... they got way too pervy."

"Well... maybe it's time." Julie touched her hand and smiled. "Could use you, you're too smart for high school anyway."

"I'm going to agree with you there." Olivia nodded her head. "Alright... I'm in."

"How are things in San Francisco?" Johnathan Sandoval's voice came from the computer terminal on the far wall.

Rebecca shrugged. "I never liked it much. Now more so than ever." She was standing in front of the massive plate window looking over the student quad of Starfleet Academy. In the distance, the Golden Gate Bridge stretched across the harbor.

"Too much politics?"

"You're damned right dad."

He chuckled, "Then why did you become an admiral?"

"I ask myself that every day. Lucky for me no one wants the Erebus, and I can plant my flag on her."

"When are you coming to Santa Fe?"

"Tomorrow. Sorry I didn't come sooner. I had business to attend to yesterday, and today I have flight evaluations on the Erebus and class all afternoon."

"Seeing that Ryder boy is more important than seeing your pop?"

Rebecca made a distinctly Vulcan expression with her right eyebrow coming up. "How did you know I went to Hawai'i yesterday?"

He chuckled, "I have my ways."

"If you should know, it wasn't a social call. There are things going on that I am not at liberty to discuss, and Nicholas has contacts that I don't have."

"I don't like the sound of that. Should I be concerned?"

"No, dad. You are perfectly safe in Santa Fe," She replied, but to herself, she added, "I hope."
