~A short time later~

To Gazelle's surprise, it hadn't taken much coaxing to get Clio to give up her vigil and get some sleep. Almost as soon as the bed was set up, Clio had curled up on it with Spot in her arms. There wasn't a way to make only one half of Zerna's room dark, but they'd improvised with a second blanket and a makeshift frame to hold it in place like a small tent.

With Clio asleep, Gazelle had plenty of freedom to focus on her little puzzle. Closer examination of the cortical stimulator and the electric paddles from the night before revealed both pieces of equipment to be completely burned out, as if something had not only absorbed the power in them but bled them so dry that the wires curled up and died. That combined with how he'd shocked her tricorder earlier was starting to make her wonder if Zerna had the same kind of biochemical defense that the Cervan bioships did.

Every piece of electronic equipment that came remotely close to him without being grounded was instantly fried. Even the heavy boneknitter had suffered light damage before she'd gotten it attached to the bed, and now she was looking for a way to bleed off the strange electrical charges that Zerna emitted. If they couldn't scan him, they couldn't treat him either.

Of course, if she couldn't scan him, she couldn't find the solution either. She scowled at the third tricorder that he'd managed to burn out, setting it on the table with the other damaged equipment. There had to be a way to stop him from doing that...

~Later (again)~

Gazelle was gone when Clio woke up, probably off devising another new test. Initially she'd left the blanket behind on the bed, but the cool temperature of Zerna's room prompted her to pick it back up and take it with her, wrapping it around her shoulders. Little Spot make grumpy noises at her and immediately demanded that she pick him up, and she obliged him with a little bit of a grin. She didn't know what time it was or how long she'd been asleep, but the lights were still on.

With her blanket and her furry little friend, she returned to her chair at Zerna's bedside, moving it close enough that she'd be able to touch him. An electrical tendril reached to greet her hand, and she snapped her hand back away from it. "Zap Gazelle all you want," she told him seriously, as if she thought he'd obey. "But if you zap me, I'll make you regret it." Thinking her old-fashioned silver 'medical alert' bracelet might be the culprit, she slipped it off and tossed it to the table across the room. Then she put her hand out toward him again. No electric charge rose to greet her this time, and she slipped her hand into his. "Gazelle thinks I'm still asleep," she told him quietly. "But it's too cold in here. So... well. You get the idea."

Pausing as if she expected him to answer, she looked at his face... and noticed that he wasn't wearing his ever present theta wave blocker. Either one of the medical staff had taken it or he'd lost it during the accident... but that meant that maybe she could actually have a conversation with him, even if he was unconscious. It might be a long shot, but she wanted to try it anyway. So she turned her blocker off and gently tapped against Zerna's mind.

She didn't get an answer, but the 'door' swung open with only light pressure. Hesitant to enter without an actual invitation, she paused her psychic advance. Consent would never come, not while he was in a coma. Still, she worried about upsetting him. He'd been angry at her for just touching his research notes, and she wasn't sure if he'd appreciate her intrusion into his mind, even if she did it just to be with him. A second nudge against his mind only swung the door open further and still did not elicit any response.

Sighing a little, she started to retreat when an image flashed just beyond the door that caught her attention. Intrigued, she forgot her caution and crept forward again into the psychic link to see what it was. At first glance it appeared to be a normal fusion reactor like the one that powered the station's IFA cannons. Then... it changed. Before her, the reactor rearranged itself ever so slightly, the light at its core changing from the gentle blue of generated power to a glowing red that grew brighter until it suddenly exploded.

Stunned by the sudden bright light that blinded her psionic senses, Clio instinctively recoiled away from Zerna. As soon as her hand left his, the connection broke, leaving behind only an echo. She blinked, holding her hand over her eyes as the room came back into focus. "Damn. No wonder you don't like anyone touching your stuff." She leaned close to him again, whispering in his ear. "I will not let that happen, whether you wake up or not." She'd have to check his lab in the basement at Cordale and make sure none of the fusion reactor notes had been left there. They'd have to be transferred to Aglaia and locked with an access code...

Arisu had heard that Clio was in sickbay with Jernal and thought she should at least show her support to her friend. As she walked in quietly she put her hand on her friend's shoulder.

"How are you holding up Clio?" Ari asked quietly. "I came as soon as I heard. Will he be alright?"

Spot growled from under the blanket, and Clio hushed him with a tap on his nose. "I don't know. He's alive, which is more than I expected..." In response to the touch on his nose, Spot immediately latched onto her finger, determined to be fed from it. His frustrated noises brought a bit of a smile to her face as she tried - unsuccessfully - to free her hand. "Stubborn," she accused the tiny cat, lifting him out of the blanket. "Let go of me, you cute little demon spawn." Her affectionate name-calling had no effect, and she shook her head at him. "Ari... this is going to sound silly. But if I want to keep my finger, I'm going to need a bottle of cave cat milk out of the replicator. Please?"

"Sure." Ari laughed and went over to the replicator and got a bottle of it created and walked back to Clio and the cave cat. "Gawd that little guy is cute, I can see why you're so passionate about protecting them. Beyond the fact that they're one of Terra Alpha's few remaining indigenous species." she sat down and sighed as she handed the bottle to her. "I do appreciate you filling in for me. I can't set foot in the office without either breaking down in tears or just freezing. I've never been like that before. My therapist is going to try some hypnosis on me tomorrow, so we'll see. But don't worry about the job, unless you feel you need it to focus on something else besides him."

Ari looked at her friend and took her hand. "If you need to talk, I'm here. I'm always here for you, just... not shop for the moment." she winced and then saw how Clio kept taking glances at him, as if hoping that the moment she turned away he'd be sitting up awake and back to his old self. "You really love him, don't you?"

"This little guy is actually a time traveler. Thanks." Clio took the bottle and offered it to Spot, who gravitated toward the smell of milk and eagerly switched his attention to the bottle. "And you're welcome... I don't mind doing it. Have to admit though... it's strange. I'm not used to this level of trust." Hearing Arisu's question, she sighed a little. "I do. I have for a while, but I wasn't sure until recently whether he loved me. Kinda figures... I finally get him to eat dinner with me and then this happens. It's like the damn universe is conspiring against me."

"Well, if there is anything you need from me, let me know." Ari smiled and laughed. "Oh it's just seems like the universe is conspiring, but then again... it's drawing you two closer. Girabaldi's report said that you barely left his side since this happened. I hacked, sue me, I'm a spy." she looked at Jernal and then back at Clio. "You mentioned trust, I knew from the moment I met you that you were probably the one agent around that I knew I could trust, simply because... so few trusted you based on silly things like race and alterations. I promise, I won't be away from my job forever and really if you need any time off, I'll understand. I'll just tell everyone to save their reports and petty BS until I'm more myself. Honestly it wasn't just Ally's death that made me break down, it was just... the latest in a long line. So seriously, if you need time off after he's better, it's granted. I need to start worrying more about all of your mental health or our little agency is going to be practically nothing."

"If I could work from here, I would. But the sickbay isn't secure enough, and I wouldn't be able to focus anyway." She paused, glancing back at Zerna and remembering what she'd seen when she'd linked her mind with his. "Speaking of security... I think we're going to have to move him. He has secrets that are really dangerous, and up here he's open to probing. I mean... I'm here. But even if I moved up here, I'd still have to leave sometimes, and it only takes a second to sneak in and steal something right out of his head. But the only place that's secure enough is the Mount. I don't know if its medical bay can handle the support he needs."

"I'll ask Doc Tess, we should be able to set something up, we always intended it to be self supporting if there was a crisis and that would include medical support." Arisu said with a nod of her head. "If I have to piss some people off to make it happen I will. I take it you want to continue using Dr. Girabaldi?"

"Then I'll let her know as soon as we get our sickbay ready." Ari squeezed her hand. "We'll get through all this, and with any luck, he'll be back to infuriating you and traipsing around your house naked in no time." she smiled and whispered. "Lucky girl."

Clio smiled a little. "Thanks. But I don't know how long I can handle this mess... I'm not handling it now and it hasn't even been a day."

"Aren't you supposed to be asleep?" Gazelle remarked as she came in with a long device in her hand. "Hi, Arisu."

Clio shook her head. "Too cold and my shoulder hurts." She watched as Gazelle stood the strange device near Zerna's bed and tendrils of energy reached for it. "What's that?"

"Lightning rod. Should be more attractive than my equipment. Or your bracelet." Gazelle pointed to where the bracelet lay. "And I think I can solve your 'too cold' problem with it. Give me a second." She took the long wire that ran out of the rod and plugged it into a boxy object that she nudged closer to Clio's chair. "Space heater. The room doesn't have independent temperature controls, but we can move your bed closer. By the way." With Arisu in the room, she didn't want to mention what she'd discovered, so she handed Clio a PADD instead. "You wanted to know how he came back."

Curious, Clio took the PADD with her free hand and looked at it, becoming increasingly puzzled by what she read. "Are you sure?"

Gazelle nodded. "We're sure. That's how it happened."

It had been a great debate in Selene mind since she had left the President’s lab whether or not to visit Jernal. From what she had gathered from her encounter with the doctor he was alright with the exception of the coma and since no word had come from her in regards to needing to see her again she took it as a good sign. But it was one thing to hear that someone was alright then to see it firsthand.

Not only had the choice become an internal debate it had almost become an external one when she had informed Clint of her intent to visit Jernal, alone. He had grown rather protective after the encounter with the President and for good reason, she knew how he felt about her and how frustrating it must be for him that they hadn’t gone beyond a single diner. But it was something she had to do and had to remind him several times that she had been this way all her life and knew what she was about and how to handle a dangerous situation should it arise. By the grace of some unknown deity Clint had given in and Selene had made up her mind to visit Jernal.

When she made it to sickbay she almost left when she discovered the doctor, Clio, and Asri in with him. But forced herself to stay and walked soundlessly to the entrance of the tiny space where he was being kept. She didn’t speak instead she watched more Jernal than the other women in the room. He appeared to be alright. He was defiantly alive and she couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. It had worked more or less, he wasn’t dead after all.

With the unshakable feeling that they were being watched, Clio glanced up from the PADD and away from her companions. "Selene? What are... did you do this? You can answer me... Ari won't care if you did or not."
