"I'll let you know in a minute." Gazelle took the hypo that Becki offered her and then pinned Zerna's arm to the bed to inject its contents. Little arcs of electricity protested her contact, giving her multiple low level shocks, similar to those from static electricity build up. "Damn, that hurts." Normally she wouldn't have touched him with her bare hands, but she wasn't risking his life to go find a pair of gloves. His seizure slowed but did not stop. A nurse who had joined them handed her another hypo loaded with lorazepam, but the second dose did little more than the first had. Why does he have to be so insistent on dying in my sickbay??? She activated the restraining field to keep Zerna on the bed and then looked at Selene. "I know what you're thinking, but this isn't your fault. It's a brain problem... we missed something." |

"How do we stop it?" Selene inquired, trying to keep the panic from her voice. She didn't know why she was starting to lose it. Normally she could keep her emotions in check. Perhaps it was a sense of frustration. She was so sure it her blood was going to work and Jernal would be okay but now... |

"Usually the lorazepam works." Gazelle gave her patient an exasperated look. "I'd try a cortical stimulator but he burned up the last one I put on his head..." By chance, she happened to look at the neurotransmitter readings on the readout panel. "Huh... his GABA level is down... I have an idea." It wasn't a medication they usually kept near the patients, but for some reason she'd put a vial of supplemental GABA on the table. She picked it up and loaded it into a hypospray then injected it into Zerna's neck. Slowly, the violent jerking and shaking smoothed out, becoming idle twitching and then nothing. "We'll put him on a GABA-melatonin regimen... that should keep it under control until I figure out what's wrong with his head..." She frowned looking at the readings; he'd done more damage to himself in the few minutes he'd been seizing than most people managed to do intentionally. "This is like some sort of cosmic joke. Not a very funny one though." |

"Could it be why he's still in this coma?" Selene inquired as she gently touched the spots along Jernal's face. |

"Hmm. Maybe. Some kind of brain damage we can't detect... but your blood won't heal that. Can't cross the blood-brain barrier..." She paused, puzzling through ways that they could make it work. An idea arose, and she handed Selene an empty hypospray. "I need a blood sample. If I can identify your healing factor, we can use it. Might take multiple rounds of transfusion treatment for his body... but if I can get the healing factor into his cerebrospinal fluid, that might be enough to fix his head."

Selene nodded as she took the empty hypospray and pressed it against her skin. It took only moments to fill and then Selene handed it back. |

"Thanks. I'm going to work on this... but do me a favor. Find Clio. Don't bring her back here... just make sure she's okay." |

((I'm going to skip this ahead by a few days, so that it will line up with the end of the "chance encounter" topic.)) The GABA-melatonin cocktail kept Zerna's brain stable enough that any further seizures were only minor twitches, easily stopped with the lorazepam or other sedatives. With him now only needed occasional attention to keep him stable, Gazelle had left him in Karen's hands while she worked on the other part of her puzzle, how Selene's blood caused the healing phenomenon. She hadn't really figured out which compound it was despite a few days of studying it; all she knew was that it was something in the plasma, one of a dozen unusual proteins she found there. Or a combination of a few different ones. Since the healing factor clearly resided in the plasma, synthesizing a serum from it proved to be a simple task, but she had no way to test its effectiveness unless she gave it to her already critical patient. His health was so unstable that they hadn't been able to move him and had instead enlisted help from security to keep uninvited guests out of his room. Because of his brain's new instability, Gazelle was hesitant to try replacing some of his cerebrospinal fluid with it, but she was rapidly running out of time. If he continued to have seizures at random intervals, the damage done to his brain might actually be irreparable. Though she was reluctant to actually give the serum to Zerna at all, she left the medical lab and went back to his room, picking up the equipment she'd need to do the replacement procedure on her way there. She didn't need much, just a couple old-fashioned hypodermic needles that she kept around just in case she ever needed them. A nurse in his room gave her a wary look when she entered with them, but Gazelle just grinned at her. "We'll need to put him on his side if we're going to try this... and then hold him there. I don't want him moving at all." "Uh... okay..." Hesitant, the nurse slowly moved over to Zerna's bed and deactivated the restraining field to roll him onto his side. "Is this actually going to work?" "We're about to find out. Hold him still because this'll hurt like hell even though he's out." Gazelle paused to let a second nurse help steady him and then used the first of the needles to carefully slip between the vertebrae in the base of his neck, the easiest place to access the subarachnoid space and withdraw the fluid. She cautiously removed a full syringe of the fluid and switched the needle and syringe for the one that contained the new serum. "Cross your fingers." Still working as gently and cautiously as she could, she slid the second needle in and slowly injected the serum into the space, grabbing a patch of gauze as she withdrew the needle. It was a small wound, but it was still safer to cover it, so she laid that patch of gauze over the tiny hole and taped it down, not wanting to risk one of her dermal regenerators. As the pair of nurses rolled Zerna flat on the bed again, Gazelle looked at him and realized that he hadn't shocked her once, despite the metal needle and her coming between him and the lightning rod she'd set up. "Uh... that's weird. A few days ago he was zapping me just for touching him..." |

"Maybe his body is getting used to you Doctor." Trinity said from a safe distance away. "The Colonel was wondering how he was doing. Calidora hasn't tried to sneak in here has she? I'd hate to have to report her for breaking protocol." she said cooly and handed off a padd. "The President wanted me to hand deliver this to you, some of the research he and Alice have done on Selene's blood, thought you could add it to your own work up." she put a stray strand of hair behind her ear and then reached into her pocket. "Don't tell anyone I gave you this... Zerna's research on the bio-electrical shocks. Might be able to help you create a damper. Just say you're that clever." |

"He's... stable. Kind of. If the serum works, his brain should start to heal, then we can work on the rest... once we move him. And we haven't seen Callidora come in yet, so I don't think she's been here." Gazelle took the first PADD and glanced at the other offered research and then back at Zerna, who seemed to be resting calmly now. "I don't know if I should take that. He gets very upset when anyone gets access to his research without his permission... even yells at Clio for 'snooping' when she finds it lying around. And I can't lie to him either. That's just... not right."

"Fine then tell him I gave it to you." Trinity said. "Not the first time I've taken his notes and it won't be the last." she said with a chuckle. "He was kind of my science teacher, I know how he writes. He actually puts it in a sort of code, but if you know the code..." she whistled. "I was trying to find another blocker for you. I set up the encryption on his computers while I was feeding the animals for Clio. Although if you tell him you saw his notes he might just wake up. That always pisses him off." |

"Yes, and then he'll wake up and claw my face. No thanks." Gazelle chuckled a little. "I know this has been a contention point for most of the Guardian Angel's crew, and I don't want to cause any trouble by taking what doesn't belong to me." |

"Well technically it belongs to him, whom you're treating and its this generations' tech not mine." Trinity said as she held the padd. "I translated his work so that it can look... similar to his but different. And like I said, let him be mad at me. He's not my CO." |

Trinity smiled and handed it off. "I better get back, I have to deliver my report to the Colonel and SubCommander and I promised Jhu I'd bring her food for her cats. Finicky things." she turned and said over her shoulder. "And thank you Doctor, Clio and Jernal are lucky to have a friend like you." |
