"Come on ladies." Clint said as he herded the Clios toward the waiting area. "They should have some decaff." |

"She's still like that even after she permanently swears off caffeine. I keep telling her it's in her genetic code. Doesn't think it's funny though." Getting the younger Clio to stay put was considerably easier now that they couldn't hear anything happening in the main bay. "I hope one of you has some medical training. I think she was inside the bioship when it went to rescue them..." "I was, and I can still hear you." "Well that would explain why your shoulder is out of joint... the bruise on your jaw. Might explain your back too..." Clio shook her head. "That's Peach. One of her armor plates came off." "Ouch." She winced slightly. "Either way you're going to need a few hours in a healing tank. Before you go hovering at his bedside again." Edited by Clio Jara, Jun 13 2013, 10:50 PM.

"That... might be a problem. Aglaia is just as broken as he is. I doubt the tank's even in one piece at this point. And no, I don't have one in the basement. Never convinced him to build me one, and now he might not get the chance." |

"There is always his shop." Mac offered, trying to be helpful as she sat down next to Clint. Selene didn't sit she stood by the door watching and waiting for her chance. |

"The gel in those tanks doesn't have the healing factor, but we have several of them on the Guardian Angel. I'll ask my husband if we can move one to the planet or at least make it available... but you'll need to stay with her." As she got up, Mrs. Jara gently pulled Selene to the side, giving her a knowing look. "Whatever it is you plan to do to save his life, I suggest you tell Gazelle about it. Before we lose him." |

“I can do that.” Mac replied nodding her head as she watched Mrs. Jara take Selene aside. She couldn’t help but wonder if future Clio was onto Selene. “I’m not planning anything.” Selene replied, quietly. |

"I don't know for certain that you do, but you told her that he would live. And I would like to think that you wouldn't lie to her or make promises that you can't keep. Either you can save him or you can't, but if you know a way... at least try." She glanced back at where the others were sitting, sighing lightly. "And if you can't do it... stay with her. Even if she hates you, stay with her until I come back." Without waiting for a reply, she left to look for her husband and see what he thought on the issue. Now that they didn't have to worry about Clio having a complete mental meltdown nearby, Gazelle's team was better able to focus on Zerna. However, he was turning out to be the most uncooperative patient ever in terms of staying alive. They'd start his heart and turn to deal with his injuries only for his heart to suddenly stop again a few minutes later. In the short time since Selene and the others managed to drag Clio out to the waiting area, they'd gone through the cycle another four times. Now he seemed stable enough, and Gazelle turned her attention again to his broken legs. They got the bones set, and for a moment she thought they'd actually saved him. Of course, as soon as the thought entered her head the 'flatline' tone sounded again. She didn't even have to ask... cordrazine and the electric paddles were instantly available. But this time when they shocked him, the 'flatline' tone stubbornly remained. They tried a second time and then a third before Gazelle sighed and shook her head, stopping the nurse who moved to try a fourth time. "It's no use. We've lost him... computer, record time of death at 2235 hours." One of the nurses sighed, starting to clean up the mess they'd left behind when she paused to look at his face, shuddering slightly. "It's like he's laughing at us. Creepy bastard." Gazelle couldn't help laughing a little. "Well, Melissa... maybe he was just really happy when he died. You know, like the old men that the city hospitals sometimes get..." "Ew!" Melissa cried, starting to laugh with her. "That's gross!" "For all you know it's also true. Get the gear put away and clean up a little, but don't move him to stasis yet. I'm going to tell Clio... she'll probably want to say goodbye." |

((I am typing this at a friend's house, so it's not going to be as intense or as long as I might like. If I have time, I will edit it later. Also, as established in another topic, Zerna apparently stays dead for a while. ))Clio looked up when the door into the waiting area opened again. The look on Gazelle's face told her everything she needed to know; they hadn't saved him despite Selene's insistence that he was going to be all right. "Clio..." "Don't. Don't apologize to me." "Okay, I expected that. But..." Gazelle paused, sitting down next to her on the couch. "We tried everything. There's nothing more we can do." "Don't tell me you tried everything unless you really did." Gazelle sighed at her. "We did. We even pulled out that old electric paddle system, but it just... didn't work." "So just like that he's dead? What the hell am I supposed to do now?" "I can't tell you that. You have to decide on your own." |

It was more Clio’s pain than anything else that prompted Selene to act more quickly then she had planned. It was clear to her that Clio loved Jernal deeply and she couldn’t help but feel envy her. She had liked Jernal but she wasn’t sure if it had been love and she doubted that she would ever experience that level of feeling for another. For a brief moment as Selene watched the scene with Clio unfold she glanced over at Mac who simply nodded and glanced over at Clint. Selene slipped quietly out of the waiting room and walked lightly to where Jernal laid on the biobed. He was smiling and she wasn’t at all surprised with a woman like Clio in the other room. She couldn’t help but be just a bit jealous she had once been the woman that had made him smile like that. But not anymore and sometimes she regretted that it hadn’t worked out between them. With a quick look around the room Selene pulled the vial of blood from her pocket and picked up a hypospray. She quickly loaded it and pressed it against Jernal’s neck and mentally said a prayer to whatever gods might be listening. Edited by Selene Cross, Jun 15 2013, 08:06 PM.

Gazelle had left Clio with Mac and Clint once she realized that Clio wasn't ready to even acknowledge that Zerna was dead, let alone actually say good bye to him. But as she went into the area where they'd been working on him to move him to one of the stasis beds, she found Selene there. She waited until the other woman finished her silent prayer and then pointed at the empty hypospray. "Dead or not, he's still my patient. So what was in that?" |

"Nothing...one of the nurses must have left it." Selene said as she handed it over to the doctor and gently ran the side of her hand against the spots that outline his face. It was a stark contrast to her normally well composed dameanor. Then suddenly those emotions were gone as Selene stepped away from the bio bed and looked at the doctor. "Take good care of him." She said and headed for the entrance to sickbay. |

She didn't remember seeing the hypo lying there before, and something about Selene's words didn't quite ring true. As Selene left, Gazelle picked up the empty hypo and tucked it into her pocket. She'd take a look at it later, find out what it was so that they didn't use the vial for something else. A quick check of the readout panel and a supplemental scan revealed nothing new, so she shrugged and called an orderly over to move him to one of the stasis rooms. They'd leave him there for a few days, give people a chance to say good bye before they did any of the postmortem work... |

~Next morning, between 0500 and 0600~ After Gazelle's insistence that she return to sickbay right now, Clio had left Makani and Markus in the holodeck to practice using their new equipment. When she got back to sickbay, she really did not expect to find Gazelle grinning at her like some kind of madwoman. "What the hell is wrong with you?" "Nothing. Come on... I want to show you something." Gazelle grabbed Clio's arm and pulled her toward the door that led to the stasis rooms. "There's nothing new to see in there. If this is some stupid plan to get me to--" "Hush." Gazelle pulled her through the door and pointed at the readout above Zerna's head. "Look." "Gazelle... I don't have time for this crap. I have to be at work in a couple hours." "I'm not kidding! Look!" "Fine..." Clio sighed and looked up at the panel, not sure of what Gazelle was doing. At first she thought she'd imagined it, so she blinked a few times and looked again. "That's... that's not possible. He died... he died almost eight hours ago. There's no way you could have... is this your idea of a cruel joke?" "I'm not that mean. Come here." Gazelle pulled her over to the side of the bed, where she'd be able to see for herself. "It's not a trick. Put your hand on his chest." "I don't think I believe you." Clio hesitated, not sure if what she was seeing was real. "I wouldn't lie to you, not about this. Here." Gazelle took Clio's hand and rested it against Zerna's chest in an area where it wouldn't hurt him. For a moment, Clio was still convinced this was some kind of a joke... but then she felt Zerna take a breath and her eyes widened as she looked down at him. "That's... that's not... how?" "To tell the truth, I don't know. But I think it has something to do with this." Gazelle fished the hypospray from the pocket of her lab coat. "I found it near him last night, after Miss Lanara came in and prayed over him." "Selene did what?" "Prayed over him. Standing like you are now, but with her eyes closed. I know a prayer when I see one... seen a lot of them over the years." "Let me see that." Clio gently took the hypospray out of Gazelle's hand, freeing the vial from the device. "There's some residue in the bottom..." "I know. I meant to test it this morning, but I didn't wake up until Melissa came to tell me you wouldn't let any of the other staff touch you." "Test it now. I want to know what it is." Handing the vial and the hypospray device itself back to Gazelle, Clio glanced back down at Zerna, who was still unconscious. "Is it... is it okay if I stay for a while? I wanna talk to him." "You can stay, but I can't promise he'll hear you. He's alive, yes, but he's in a coma. We can't wake him." "That's okay. I don't need him to answer me." |

The sound of several series of clicking sounds came from outside the door before six fully grown cave cats walked through the doors, the lead cat had a young kitten sleeping on her back. The walk there had been interesting, many had jumped in fear when they saw the formation of cave cats. But they where simply walking in perfect formation with the person who they saw as one of the alphas, Jara. The cats stood still in a half circle and looked around, the 400 pound Spunky noticed Miss Clio and huffed at her in greeting before she looked at Jara, he could tell she was telling him she was sorry. |
