"You won't be saying that if I throw up on you." Sometimes it seemed like her trusted her too much, but at least he wasn't afraid she was going to do any lasting damage. "There's two more in this spot, then we have to find out how deep the other ten really are."

He pulled her close and planted his lips against her, he didn't care if the scalpel would accidentally stab him. He wanted her to see that he would love her not matter what.

The kiss was unexpected, and she barely had time to flip the scalpel in her hand so that it lay flat against his chest rather than piercing it. When he let her go, she grinned a little crookedly at him. "All right then. But from now on... no more heroics unless you're wearing a tactical vest."

"Next time let's do quality time with a movie and a fresh batch of cookies." She made a careful incision between the two remaining pellets then pulled one out and dropped it into the tray. The cut was just starting to close as she fished the second pellet out. "Okay... that part's done... and it looks like there's only seven from the second blast. Some of them must have missed..."

"I know. I just... I wasn't feeling well before you got home, and this really is not helping. But I'm not about to call Tess and have her go into labor on my lawn."

Clio snorted at him. "Yeah, she'll believe that. We both know you're only cooperating because it's me." She repositioned the scanner so that it would show how deeply the pellets had penetrated on his side, and - luckily - they all appeared to be relatively shallow. As long as she didn't lose her grip on any of them, it would be easy to pull them out... except for the one that was somehow behind one of his ribs. That one would be a pain in the ass, and she'd leave it for last. "Some of these cuts are going through muscle... the anesthetic should still help, but you're going to feel it more."

"Okay..." She quietly picked out the first pellet to remove and made a small cut near it. As she pulled it out, she discovered that since he was lying on his back, the pellets in his side wouldn't need to be pulled out, just guided through until they fell free. The first two came free with little trouble at all, and a third seemed to follow the second out, as if they'd been stuck together. That left the one that was going to be a problem and three embedded in the muscles of his chest wall. How they hadn't simply gone through to his lungs was a complete mystery.

She shook her head. "Four more, and one of 'em's actually behind a rib. Other three are embedded in the muscles... those three should pop right out. But the fourth one... I'm not sure if I can reach it."
