"I understand and I appreciate it. But I'll be alright, trust me." he closed his eyes as a few drops started to fall just before the heaven practically opened up.

"I do trust you, but that's not the point." They hadn't extended the roof over the back deck, and the sudden downpour of water brought a bit of a scowl to her face, though the effect was lost behind the way her hair immediately fell in her face. "Why don't we go inside?"

"You go babe. I like it here." Zerna said with a sigh, the rain felt nice, in a way it was therapy for him.

"If you're not going inside I'm not either." She sat down next to him, close enough to touch him but not so close that he'd feel like he was being smothered. "I don't know what that woman said to you, but if it has you this upset it wasn't anything good..."

"Go inside damnit. You could catch a cold and that is not healthy for the children!"

"I don't think I've ever caught a cold, and I've been in worse weather than this. Besides, I can't talk to you if I go inside and you stay out here."

"Would you go inside damnit!?" he was now getting frustrated.

"No, I won't." She turned to face him more directly, giving him a very concerned look. "Why are you doing this? Why can't you just talk to me like a normal person instead of trying to make me go away?"

"Because I want to think alright." he sighed again as he let the rain fall on him, feeling like each drop was taking a little bit of his pain with it.

"Fine. Be stubborn. You can sit out here and be miserable by yourself... forget I even tried then." Frustrated with his refusal to talk, she left him there, slamming the sliding glass door shut behind her as she went inside to change into dry clothes. For a moment, she contemplated locking it too but decided that would be too cruel.

She took her time changing, trading her jeans and t-shirt for jogging pants and a sweatshirt and leaving the rain-damp clothing hung in the bathroom to dry before she returned to the kitchen. Naturally, Zerna was still outside, and she shook her head at him as she retrieved one of her tea cups and set the replicator to dispense hot water into it.

The rain concealed his actual tears. He felt like a fool and he should go and dive in to a hole somewhere and never come out. But he had a wonderful girlfriend now and two children on the way. He couldn't abandon them. But the pain was still the same and he felt really bad.

For the most part, Clio ignored him as she dropped a tea bag into the hot water, only glancing in the direction of the sliding door to see if he was even still there. His attitude was frustrating enough without his refusal to talk, and she felt another brief temptation to lock the doors and make him ask to come back in. He probably has his key anyway. Despite her annoyance with him, she made a second cup of tea and left it on the table for him; he'd have to come inside sooner or later. Shaking her head slightly, she gave him one final look before retreating away from the door and toward the living room. She wasn't going to learn anything from watching him, and if he didn't want to talk he probably didn't want to be watched either.

The cracking of the thunder and the light display was very close together and he heard some scratching sounds. He looked over at the glass door and it was Spunky, desperately trying to get out. He sighed and pulled the door open just enough for her to squeeze through and it didn't take long before she was curled up next to him and shaking like a leaf. So he picked her up and placed her inside his jacket and close to his heart where she could hear it. She was then starting to calm down.

At the crack of thunder, Murphy appeared out of nowhere and jumped in her lap, his head nearly smashing into her tea cup. He leaned on her belly, and she made a face at him. "Don't do that." Naturally, Murphy didn't listen; he was still trying to hide his face. She sighed at him, patting his head. "You're a coward. Go get your blanket." To her surprise, Murphy hopped down and retrieved his blanket, curling up nearby with it and blinking up at her. His tail thumped against the floor as he wagged it, and she had to smile, just a little. "Yeah, you're cute. You know it too." Taking a few sips of her tea, she glanced toward the kitchen, where the sound of the rain had suddenly grown louder, as if the door were open. Zerna didn't appear in the doorway, so she shrugged and went back to her tea. Her mind wandered slightly as she drank it, and before long she set the cup down on a table and headed for the stairs.

"It's cold out here, we should get you inside." he stood up and went inside, closing the glass door behind him. Even if he still was quite upset, he couldn't let that make his little kitten ill. So he took a kitchen towel and started to dry her off.
